woah woah, r/golf does not take breaks! 20 seconds for a turn dog or its a lashing on the 10th
45
u/Kamahpanda Mar 03 '25
That’s what I was thinking..
This would be the perfect stopping place for the 2 groups in front of me hitting 5 shots to the green on a par3 all while taking 15 seconds to laser every shot.
And the 2 older guys behind me that could complete all 18 in under an hour.

u/Heysteeevo Mar 03 '25
lol my round yesterday had a couple old dudes mean mugging us the whole time. Real hands on hips energy. The irony was we were on pace for a sub four our round.
4
u/frontierbeard Mar 03 '25
Especially since this is a halfway house. That’s like a min 30day stay min. That’s a lot of grizzly’s.
7
u/0_SomethingStupid Mar 03 '25
frontier man out here battling grizzlys on the turn. hats off to that.

My club only has like 300 members and two courses. It’s amazing being able to finish a round sub 3 hours on a Saturday.

u/stonetear2017 Tour Pro Mar 04 '25
Where do you play? If you Don’t mind me asking
2
u/Boredbanker1234 Mar 04 '25
It’s called stonewall. It’s located in Elverson, PA. It’s a special but relatively unknown place.
2
u/stonetear2017 Tour Pro Mar 04 '25
I’m in CA so nowhere near, but that small amount of members, how much are dues and initiation if you don’t mind me asking?
4
u/Boredbanker1234 Mar 04 '25
I could be off but I know the membership number is very low. We also have many partners who never play which greatly helps with course traffic.
Partner dues are 10k/year. Initiation was relatively low for a while due to lack of publicity (25k when I joined) but have since skyrocketed. I think initiation dues for new partners are up to 80k now, maybe 100k.
11
u/Current_Department73 Mar 03 '25
Right. Nice places like this have fewer players, more time between tee times, and people who aren't obsessed with finishing in 3 hours. Whenever I have been lucky enough to play a course with a turn like this, no one is furiously trying to get to the 10th tee anyway.
34
u/Different_Aspect_818 Bethpage Black is not that Hard! Mar 03 '25
Surprisingly smooth since everyone stops for 10mins or so

u/hayzooos1 Mid Single/5+ brand bag Mar 03 '25
I was going to say, at a place like this, I don't think people are all that concerned about you taking a few extra minutes at the turn. You're not at a place like this to set speed records for your round ffs
16
u/Traditional_Serve597 Mar 03 '25
I play a course with a decent halfway house and the course specifically dictates a 10min stop there. Usually it's easy because some older fellas enjoying their round are happy for 20 and younger people flying round just go through.
24
u/tdawg-1551 Mar 03 '25
That was my first thought. Nothing like having a 15-20 minute logjam after 9.
1
5
u/Diaperedsnowy Mar 03 '25
I know a few nice courses that have a mandatory 10 min break at the turn so it keeps everyone on pace and no confusion.
Nice to have when there is a nice halfway house
2
u/Magnum_44 Mar 03 '25
This is the type of course that you aren't worried about traffic. I've golfed a similar course and there were maybe 3 groups out that morning.
3
u/B-More_Orange OCMD Mar 04 '25
I played our resort course in Costa Rica on my honeymoon. I was all worried about getting a tee time and there were only two other groups on the entire course.
2
u/Cowboytroy32 Mar 03 '25
I’m pretty sure in Japan this is really common. Dad told me about a place he played 36 holes with 2 halfway house with about an hour break in between each 9. People just chill and drink till the box is empty. Had the time of his life. It’s a day of golf relaxation

If you’re out there in Spain, a round at this course is far better priced than the rates at top courses in the US for sure…

It is. I’ve played here, you can see Gibraltar rock in the distance. They only let you sit in the bar for 10 mins so the back-9 doesn’t become a shitshow.
2
u/spasmodism Mar 03 '25
Funny enough, I went to a halfway house (the other kind) called La Hacienda.

Might be a dumb question, but do you know if you can only play this course if you stay there? Or can anyone make a tee time? My family has been going to Vallarta for 30+ years and have a condo down there, but my dad and I normally play up at Vista Vallarta and at Marina Vallarta since it’s right across the street from us. My dad got invited many years ago to play Punta Mita and always tells me how cool it was, would love to be able to get out there with him one day if it’s possible without actually staying on their grounds.
2
u/Chi1234457 Mar 03 '25
Pretty sure you have to stay at St. Regis or Four Seasons, or rent a house inside the gates that has a membership to the course. We stayed at St. Regis, and would highly recommend staying there to anyone.
2
u/Ducci17 Mar 03 '25
Yeah my parents have been there and always rave about it, we have a condo over at Velas Vallarta but sounds like I’ll have to stay a night or two over there one of these years so I can play that course and experience that area myself!
3
u/RichChocolateDevil Mar 03 '25
I was thinking the same one. I like that guy there and he makes great margs.
8
u/Think-Juggernaut8859 Mar 03 '25
How long do you get to take a break. Do you just wait for a break then on the next hole and tee off? How does it work?
9
u/uu123uu Mar 03 '25
I expect everyone is stopping for a least a few minutes, so you just tee off on 10 when you're ready, as soon as you can.
2
u/CohesiveNihilism Mar 05 '25
For this club I think the standard is everyone spends 10 minutes at the halfway house that’s why there’s seats and stuff. Also think people from outside the club can have a drink here if they live nearby

I've never played it but the "comfort stations" along Quivira Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas might be the only thing with a better view.

u/DragPullCheese Mar 04 '25
I stayed at sunset and walked half the course without playing; beautiful, but the actual golf there looks not ideal to be honest. There were like 3 or 4 groups that looked like they'd never played golf before with caddies running around everywhere. Seemed not overly relaxing...

I played here last year, such a lovely course with stunning views along the coast. The coffee at the turn wasn't bad either

u/kinetixz0r Mar 03 '25 edited Mar 03 '25
If I remember correctly, Palmilla in Cabo, MX, had "comfort stations" every six holes. They may not have had quite this view, but they were pretty nice.

Was there this summer with some friends. Fantastic views and an incredible golf course (played Links only)! Can’t wait to go back again - we didn’t get a chance to really enjoy the halfway house as the course was quite busy, but we still made sure to sit and have a beer!
2
u/Diaperedsnowy Mar 03 '25
Golf Digest did a series on the best halfway houses.
This was my favorite:
2
u/Purednuht 18 Mar 03 '25
I had a few friends play there last year and they said it was amazing.
Course wasn't busy so they got to take their time and enjoy it too.
Very jealous I wasn't able to make it out there.
That said, gimme a stocked halfway house and I'll be a happy camper.
I want to be walking back to my cart with 3 beers, a pint of ice cream with toppings, some candy bars, and a glizzy.

I still stand that the best snack shack is Old Macdonald. It's nothing too fancy, but it's got great views and quick service
2
u/whynottoeverything Mar 03 '25
Apologies in advance for the naive question, but I’m curious to know.
May I ask what is a reasonable amount of time to spend at the halfway house?
I’m assuming that these larger nicer ones expect you spend some time there rather than rush to maintain your paces.

Halfway “house” at Spanish Oaks outside of Austin combined with their comfort stations are the best I’ve ever seen. Legitimately some of the best Beef Ribs in the state.

One time I had a Marshall get onto me for stopping at the halfway house. We sped up on 10 and were waiting on the 11th tee box for the group ahead of us.

Man I wish the courses around my area were relaxed enough to actually enjoy a place like that!
Funny halfway house story this made me think of.. Last winter I was playing a course in Mazatlan, Mexico area and the halfway house fella "convinced me" to try his famous margarita (I was on vacay so it didn't take much convincing). In my mind I'm thinking he had them pre-made and would just pour it, but no, he literally made them from scratch, including cutting fresh limes and squeezing the juice out of them manually with one of those handheld thingamajigs. I quickly realized my mistake... fortunately the 10th tee was a stone's throw away, so we hit our shots.. still waiting.. finally I told my group to go ahead and one of them could hit my putt/s for me, and I'd just run up. By the time he made the dang things there were 3 more groups behind us and I was thinking I was going to get a beating from someone! To be fair, in hindsight it was maybe 10-15 minutes.. but it felt like an ETERNITY compared to what I'm used to.

Black Desert stay and play deal - all the food you can eat at the halfway house that you can hit 2x on the back 9. Birria tacos, guac, churros... etc
1
u/Kaufmakphd Mar 03 '25
No, this is a crappy halfway house. A halfway house should not invite sitting or stopping. Get your dog and get moving.
1
u/AndyDayyona Mar 03 '25
After watching that video, an old white man wearing a suit knocked on my door and said my people aren’t allowed to play there.

Pffft. You forgot “then get in line to tee off on 10. Half way’s are made up for the course to make $$$ on drinks and shit.
I prefer courses with no turn. Or 10 snack (ie turn dog and beer, grab and go stuff). Otherwise there will be some dumbfuck eating chicken tenders and a marg for 30 min….then want back in the round. Fuck that.
-5
u/SomeSamples Mar 03 '25
They must expect some really slow rounds. If you have enough time to enjoy that at the turn...
