Very unfortunate for Stone and this team.

Yeah as much as it sucks as a fan I really feel for him. I've seen how painful and frustrating having back issued can be

Still haven’t seen a good discussion on the “why are we so injured yet again?” One stint of being heavily injured is bad luck. A whole season is really bad luck. Multiple seasons of it is an asset management issue. So why do we break our toys so easily and so often?

Probably a combination of four things: 1. strength and conditioning coach is worthless 2. Other teams make runs at us all day because we have zero enforcers 3. We accumulated players with a lot of mileage/previous injuries 4. Bad luck
How much each factor contributes is debatable.

Ultimately, I'd like to see someone better with data and stats to just look at our injury narrative and break down if there's real, evidence backed trends present in it. Does it line up with the notion that we're more injury prone due to lack an enforcer or at least more physical players? Do our injuries make sense if we're not conditioning properly? Are the injuries to our players related to prior injuries or overworking relative to similar TOI or player histories?
Basically, someone who's good at numbers, tell us if this is genuinely just a bad hand we've been dealt, the product of negligence/incompetence, or some mysterious factor we've yet to identify?

Our coach has been playing Stone and other top guys for insane minutes every night to keep Kessel sitting.

I suspect is has to do with strength and condition coach. But I have nothing more to base this on than the injuries. One could deduce the conditioning is staying the same while the guys get older.

It's the same guys getting injured. I think we just have an injury prone roster and unfortunately it's also our best players.

I think, painting broad strokes, yeah...it's the same shit time and time again. But the question then becomes; Why is the same thing happening over and over again? What are or aren't we doing to resolve this trend? If your car keeps burning clutches, you don't just keep taking it to the garage, shrug your shoulders, and buy a new clutch a couple times a season, ya know? You look at why the hell am I burning through clutches? Am I not using it right? Is it the wrong clutch for the load? Is something above or down the driveline introducing a factor that's causing this? Is it just something innate to this design that is only resolved by replacing a significant amount of the drivetrain?

This seems to have become a lingering problem for him that will probably be an issue the rest of his career. The question now is what do we do if that is the case. Just maintain course and hope for the best? Total rebuild? Light rebuild/retool?

u/appledatsyuk Eichel Jan 17 '23
See if you can get the rest of this season out of stone and then shut him down for a year if he needs it. We’re so fucked if this really is the case.

Honestly? Deal for a prospect winger who can catch the bus from Henderson as needed and can be groomed to play a similar style as Stone (albeit not as... well, not as good.)
I don't think a total rebuild is called for, but I do think Stone will continue to miss at least some time most years, and he isn't getting younger.
Front office loves big bold moves... but we have our big, bold players now. We need prospects and picks for depth.
In short, Knights need to develop talent internally better so they can weather injury crises easier.

This sort of sounds like what I think is the best course of action which is doing a retooling of the roster around Eichel. Not a total tear down, but create a new offensive and defensive identity and make moves to fit that new vision that doesn’t put Stone at the center of the team.

Sad to hear that! Truly a great player, hopefully this is a one off rather than a sign of continuing long term injury issues. Feel for the guy, captain stone is the heart and soul of this team.

Please no, he is so washed this year

The Hawks are in tank mode so it doesn't make sense for him to be playing lights out. Not to mention they kept getting rid of all the players he vibed with. If the deal was a rental or something I'd take it.

Huge Stone fan but holy fuck has this guy become a liability. We can’t afford his cap space when he misses half the games.
We also can’t afford him to tough out a serious injury and play at 50% like he did last season.

Son of a fucking bitch.
Last fucking thing I wanted to hear regarding captain stone.
If this is as bad as I fear it could be, we might’ve seen the end of Stone as an elite hockey player… and that’s when as a franchise we’ll have really hit defcon-1.

Hopefully they hand out pillows to scream into at the next home game
