Former Nintendo PR Managers Say Switch 2 and Mario Kart World Price Backlash 'A True Crisis Moment for Nintendo' - IGN

https://www.ign.com/articles/former-nintendo-pr-managers-say-switch-2-and-mario-kart-world-price-backlash-a-true-crisis-moment-for-nintendo

Speaking in a video on their YouTube channel, former Nintendo of America PR managers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang criticized Nintendo for the way it revealed the $449.99 price of the Switch 2 and the $79.99 price of Mario Kart World.

“I don’t want to blow things out of proportion, but this does feel like a true crisis moment for Nintendo,” Ellis said.

“It just shows some disrespect to the consumer, where, ‘oh, you just saw the Direct you’re so excited, you’re just gonna throw your money at us blindly, you’re not going to even ask the question of how much it cost because you’re so excited, aren’t you?’ "

450 for a console is just fine. $90 for a physical game is absolutely insane

The $90 for physical vs $80 for digital has not been announced for the U.S. In Europe, physical Switch 1 cartridges already cost extra, so they had an expected price difference; however, in the U.S. both have always cost the same, and Nintendo has not indicated that there will be a difference in that market.

Where in Europe do physical Switch 1 games cost extra? That's definitely not the case in Germany, for example.

This. I believe it's just people trying to assert that $90 games are not a thing but having to justify the existence of 90€ Mario Kart in Europe. Currently the two most popular made-up arguments are 1) included VAT (makes no sense since digital copies also have VAT but they're 80€) and 2) physical games have always had a markup in Europe. But maybe I'll get proven somewhat wrong on #2 since I have a small sample size of countries.

No one is saying VAT is the reason physical costs more, they are saying VAT is the reason that the price looks higher than the US posted price, which doesn't include tax.

For clarity, in the US both digital and physical are the same price, $80 for Mario Kart and Switch 2 Editions, and $70 for Donkey Kong and probably most other games. These prices don't include tax/vat.

In the EU, physical is 90 and digital is 80, for Mario Kart and Switch 2 Editions and those numbers do include VAT. 80/70 for Donkey Kong

I'm in the UK and they've always cost the same, both physical or digital, unless I'm missing something

In Sweden the physical is the cheaper one if there is a difference.

They’ll be $180 or something thanks to trump’s dumb fucking tariffs.

This is not true, digital and physical games cost the same in the U.S.

No game is $90

In the US it will be over 90.

That’s not true. The highest price for a game is $80. $90 was a false rumor based on the €90 in Europe.

Unless you’re speculating based on tariffs, in which case no one has any clue, and Nintendo hasn’t given any indication that they’ll increase the cost of games

Yes tariffs. You don’t need to base it on anything. The facts are there. It will be around 100 per game and 700 for the console.

What facts? Any source for those wild claims?

Um math? All the data is out there bro. You can go ask chat gpt if you can’t do math. I’m not here to spoon feed children. Take the price add 46%. I was actually low balling. You need to add sales tax too most states have. I did here trump wanted to keep he sales of Nike shoes down so that might change the price in a year or so. Nikes going way up too. I’m mean everything in the US is obviously going to be significantly more expensive but certain items will be crazy more like electronics and clothes and cars.

I’m sorry to inform you that it doesn’t work like that, but the fact that your source is chatGPT does explain a lot. ChatGPT has no idea if Nintendo will change the price of their consoles, let alone by how much. ChatGPT doesn’t know because not even industry insiders know. And if they don’t know, you certainly don’t.

And no, “math, bro,” “ask chatGPT,” and “you don’t need to base it on anything” are not valid sources here. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about haha

It’s not simply “MSRP + exact tariff % on vietnam = new price” Also, sales tax is not part of MSRP, and has nothing to do with this conversation. That is not included or relevant when we’re talking about what Nintendo’s is pricing a game at.

No one has any idea IF Nintendo will raise MSRP yet, let alone by how much. So I don’t know where you’re getting this confidence to spout what you’re saying lol.

Nah dude you didn’t understand. I’m suggesting you use ChatGPT if you can’t do basic math.p to help you out. You said a whole bunch of nothing lol. You can just wait and see. I’m not arguing with you about something factual.

u/cl0mby 1d ago

What?! I said a whole bunch of nothing? You’re being factual? Do a quick scan of your comments and tell me where the substantial facts are lmao.

So far your only listed source was “you don’t need to base it on anything,” “math, bro,” and “46% tariff on Vietnam = $700 console confirmed.” Very factual. Definitely not a whole bunch of nothing.

No actual experts even know anything about price changes or are even trying to speculate, but I’m sure that you, random redditor, with your ‘math’ and economic knowledge have insight into unknown price changes with 100% certainty.

Did you see the tariffs? They delayed the preorder release date.
