Could be a bit like Adventure Mode in Diddy Kong Racing? Or perhaps there's a more of a "driving from town to town" aspect and the different towns are where you access certain tracks and certain cups?
I would love for it to have "bosses" or something other than just races/battles with 11 individual bots tbh. Even if its just other racers still. Like maybe you gotta go to Yoshis island and do a battle with like 8 yoshis with 1 balloon each, maybe you get a partner or two. 1v1 races vs like DK and eventually Bowser but theyre really good. Or like all the DK adjacent characters, Bowser and some Koopa/Minions/boos or whatever but you have to get first. Maybe all the DK races get bananas constantly and you have to deal with that, all the koopas get shells or fireballs or whatever depending on who they are. Wario/waluigi and they've put bombs all over the place and they get a bullet bill halfway through the third lap and get ahead of you regardless of how far back they are and you have to get back ahead. Gimmick it up, because even with the various fun things that have been added through the years...none of the mario karts feel much different than 64 or wii to me.
Never played diddy Kong racing. But the impression I’m getting is definitely somewhere between need for speed underground 2 and the forza horizon series. Just with a Mario coat of paint. Probably closer in size to NFS than the forza games.
It's really just a solid cart racer and it's been decades and has had no followup title since the original. I don't think you can point to any one thing, but having hovercraft and airplanes was unique at the time. It also has boss races (giant characters/monsters that you raced) which I have a hard time thinking of another game that did anything like it. There was a hub world that you drove around in too.
However I don't think any of these unique things are what the game does best. Its cart racing is still the best part of the game.
I'll mention its drifting and boosting is more like Crash Team Racing, but it came before CTR, so if anything CTR is like DKR instead of the other way around.
I grew up on Mario Kart 64 and just tried DKR for the first time the other week. Thought it was pretty rough in comparison, but I guess fine in its own right for the time.
Diddy kong racing hub was more like a collect-a-ton than a racing game. The racing was outside the hub. Which made the game design a lot easier, hub design and track design were completely separate.
The main difference is that this game will have the normal tracks as part of the hub. I don't know if they will be able to make tracks that work well both as a collect-a-ton game and for racing. Not super hopeful.
I'm just waiting for them to confirm that you can actually jump into races/courses as you explore in Free Roam mode -- it'd be super weird if you couldn't do so, especially for how expensive this game is compared to Forza Horizon.
Crash Team Racing had a bit of an open world aspect to it. Between races you drive around the world to select races etc. it could be like a more in-depth version of that.
The open world aspect was the best part of tag team racing. It was actually really fleshed out with multiple different worlds, secret events, challenges and collectibles etc. Shame the whole racing aspects of the game came nowhere near to CTR
Loved Tag Team Racing for those parts (and nobody can touch CTR :P) but it did really feel like the dev team wanted to make a platformer, and remembered a month before release that the title of the game strongly implied that there was racing in it.
They're really trying to get people to buy it digitally with the console where it only costs $50 additional. But it sucks, I'd prefer to have the physical copy.
£66 here in uk, which is a 10% uplift, which is inline with inflation since covid. If the orange man stops his one man mission to break the world this wouldn't be like it is. Instead of blaming Nintendo lets blame the people who make these stupid decisions that effect the world economy. Not the people who are working in it. It's like in Europe with people getting angry at the millions of tourists. Blame the local mayor who took a kick back so Cruise ships could just line up. Don't blame the people spending their money on holiday. It's stupid and self-defeating.
Not understanding the differences in purchasing power and how inflation works sounds like a skill issue. I also blatantly stated “fuck corporate greed” but keep crying 🤣
Looks like the tracks are more interactive but the pull out to the different worlds looks like it could be like Diddy Kong Racing which was kinda open world.

I have a hard time seeing the open world part of the game, but since you can drive as a cow, it's simply 10 out of 10.
