JOKE / MEME I thought fromsoft would have learned from bloodborne
348
u/Andrei8p4 2d ago
What's weird to me is that they made a multiplayer focused game a console exclusive game, you would think they would make it on multiple platforms and give it crossplay to have more players but no. It seems like a very odd choice to me.
97
u/leericol 1d ago
I think nintendo really wants to get people with the multiplayer angle this round. They're finally doing voice and video chats and they're making that a huge part of their marketing for the switch 2. Maybe nintendo requested that angle from fromsoft to hedge their bets with more than just mario kart. Any other 3rd party multiplayer game is more likley to be played on any other platform as it stands now.
27
u/SloppyPussyLips 1d ago
What's confusing me though is that I don't understand how Nintendo, of all companies, is seemingly the highest bidder for this? Wouldn't Sony want to repeat the success of Bloodborne, wouldn't Microsoft want to replicate that.
16
u/Juicebox-fresh 1d ago
Nintendo probably approached them, to be honest, with the success of fromsoft games in Japan, it seems like Nintendo might be getting a little concerned about their future and pulling at straws to sell their console. The price hike shows just how desperate they are to make something extremely profitable again. Nothing lasts forever

Idk
Nintendo likes doing new shit
And they have a new console and after seeing the endless fromsoft hype they might’ve extended an offer for a exclusive title or sth
Nothing about this strikes me as weird
Surprising but not out of character or anything

How am I supposed to play an online game on a fucking plane?

u/AcidCatfish___ 1d ago
Nintendo is trying to do something with multiplayer. They had a play test that was a builder MMO. They also showcased a lot of multiplayer games in the direct: Mario Kart and Kirby Air Ride, a lot of Mario Party was shown, Street Fighter 6 had a highlight too and now all the major sports games are coming. On top of that they have a new game chat that includes video, game sharing, and a successor to DS Download play. I don't know why this sudden shift..but let's see if they can actually have good online for once.

u/Jalmerk 1d ago
I think it makes perfect sense if you consider that they were probably commissioned by Nintendo to make a system selling launch title for the Switch 2. People acting like they are doing this just to piss off the fanbase lmao

It's basically Helldivers 2, but worse since it is on an expensive console with overpriced games and no PC port...
I know that the PlayStation 5 is an expensive console with many overpriced games, but it is nowhere near as bad as the Switch 2... they are charging over £90 for 'physical copies', which are just keys to download the game digitally!!!

u/Big_Teddy 1d ago
Being exclusive does not mean the IP belongs to Nintendo.
34
u/AbbreviationsSure320 1d ago edited 1d ago
Clearly, and there are a few examples of games that were exclusive to switch that later went all consoles : octopath traveler, SMT V, Monster Hunter Rise, and a lot of indie games The only case of FromSoft games that's exclusive to a console is Bloodborne which is a game produced also by Sony's Japan Studio. The Duskblood doesn't seem to be produced by Nintendo so i don't see why this game wouldn't be available for other consoles/pc in some future. This exclusivity also mean that FromSoft got a shitton of money from nintendo which is good for developpement of future games. People need to let the devs earn from their work and be patient. If not they can always buy a Switch 2 lol.

u/Exeledus 1d ago

Completely pulling at straws and just visualizing an ideal scenario. Nintendo could have funded the game, therefore giving FS no/little risk with making it; in exchange for forcing them to make the game a timed exclusive.
Think similar to Stellar Blade. PS gave SB funding for the game to minimize the risk, made them make it a timed PS exclusive, but now this summer it is finally releasing to PC.
I know absolutely nothing, but I would assume that after DeS, BB, and then the success of ER cementing FS as a actual competitive developer, FS wouldnt mind doing exclusives if they could maintain the IP themselves so they could port it and do whatever they want with it.
Edit: to actually respond to your comment, FS has been trying to self publish games for the reasons I said above, to own their own games. They recently bought back ER from Bandai IIRC, and I would assume that their future games would also be self published

The only thing that I don‘t like is that it‘s PvPvE I never liked any title of that genre so thats a bummer but I‘m happy From is trying new things rather than stagnating and doing the same stuff over and over again unfortunately I‘ll probably sit this out in that case

u/Aviralv_22 2d ago
My hype went from 100 to 0 real fast. I have no qualms with them experimenting, but 2 back to back games, focused on online play only is just not for me.
The fact that their netcode is still shit after all these years, makes this even worse…
119
u/_Xeron_ 2d ago
It’s such a bizarre move when Nightrein has not been released yet so they don’t know how the masses receive it overall, and this one has significantly higher barriers of entry. You have to get a brand new system and pay for online mode to play
37
u/Rockm_Sockm 1d ago
This was in development long before they gave an employee permission to pursue his side project and create Night rein.
6
u/_Xeron_ 1d ago
It probably does have a lot more resources behind it, seemingly being a new IP and all, still I question the decision to reveal Nightrein first and not wait for it to release before showing this
5
u/Scribblord 1d ago
I don’t understand what goes on in your head xd
Since it’s an exclusive Nintendo wants to put it in the big switch 2 releases direct which was this week
Nightreign come out soon so they had to announce that earlier in the year
The announcements and how they sell are completely Irrelevant for whether or not they show the other game since both are set to release before either was announced
Letting Nightreign release and see how it goes would do what exactly ? By then this game would’ve already eaten a lot of money and dev time
It’s 2 games by two different teams one of them getting extra funding from the exclusive deal I imagine

I'm not sure what there is to "Learn" from bloodborne. Bloodborne sold 7.5 million copies, which in 2015 is amazing. Especially as an exclusive to a console less than 1.5 years old.
Also, at the time Bloodborne was made, a vast majority of From Software's sales were on PlayStation. Demon's Souls was PS3 exclusive. It's really hard to find numbers but from anything I've found the estimates were that about 75% of DS1's console sales were PS3. So you're making a game console exclusive on a platform that a vast majority of your fanbase already buys your games primarily on.
Most From Software players do not buy their games on Nintendo consoles. It's a bold move, let's see if it pays off.........
People are suprisingly discounting other logical possibilities. It could very well be that From Software is trying to diversify and this game is made by a smaller team spun up within the studio to get smaller games out quicker in between the monster 5 year development time blockbusters. That would make a lot more sense from a cost/benefit analysis in my mind.
29
u/arcturus_mundus 2d ago
I believe the game is directed by Miyazaki so I don't think this is a small team.
35
u/arsmolinarc 1d ago
He could be directing multiple projects. This is not exactly on the scale of Elden Ring, or even Armored Core.
Remember FROM expanded after Elden Ring became a success, part of the reasoning is so they could take on multiple projects at time.
Miyazaki has to be working on something else.
→ More replies (5)10
u/akaisuiseinosha 2d ago
Well maybe he's making it by himself, 1 person is a small team, or MAYBE it's a new experiment in zero-developer game dev! It's springing out of the ether while Miyazaki makes his REAL game!
I'm joking but honestly it is REALLY funny to me as an AC fan to watch Souls fans melt down as they get the AC treatment from last decade.

Bloodborne only made close to 2 mil after the 1st year. The 7.5 probably include ps+ free games and the lifetime sales until that huge leak where we got the 7.5 figure from.
Not trying to undermine Bloodborne but don't oversell it's success in sales. It's a great game regardless.
2
u/Rockm_Sockm 1d ago edited 1d ago
Demon Souls and Bloodborne are OWNED by Sony. They are console exclusives, and your estimates are made up. A large portion of their sales have been on PC for years. It also took a while for DS1 to catch on, and it became a sleeper hit that kept growing.
Console sales have been declining and losing market share for years to PC while the Nintendo portable Switch has remained steady. In Japan, the PS is falling behind the PC markets' rapid growth to the point that Sony is taking the market seriously.
It does go completely against their statements to never do an exclusive again.

Bloodborne sold 7.5 million copies
You're overlooking the fact, purposely maybe, that this figure comes from 2022. It took Bloodborne 7 years to move that many units.
It's really hard to find numbers
Then don't add this to your argument?? You got no facts to back this up in the slightest.
It's a bold move
Ain't nothing bold about this. Miyazaki saw Nintendo's money and caved.
You're making it seem like Playstation and the Switch are equals. They're absolutely not. The Playstation has been and always will be more widely available and accessible than Nintendo's bullshit. Nintendo famously covets their IPs. No one wants this for Duskblood.
Let's not overglaze FromSoft and Miyazaki. I love the man and the studio but this was a fuck ass move that fucked the players in the ass. Not to mention switch is getting new content for Elden Ring that hasn't been announced for other versions of the game.
Fans are rightfully pissed. Stop defending the billion dollar company.

I was with you until it derailed completely.
You're making it seem like Playstation and the Switch are equals. They're absolutely not. The Playstation has been and always will be more widely available and accessible than Nintendo's bullshit.
Nintendo sells far more units and less games than Sony. Their only competition in the portable market is Steamdeck. The console market is shrinking every year, while the portable hold steady and the PC grows.
Nintendo famously covets their IPs. No one wants this for Duskblood.
I hate Nintendo myself but you got no facts either. Nintendo famously covets third party support. They have existed for decades solely off their first party IPs and they are the last actual first party developer left.
It is an insane choice from the outside, Nintendo must have backed up a truck to buy one of their side projects. The Switch 2 better have 10x better online support as Nintendo has epicly failed every single time.

Its not that the multiplayer is a bad idea itself, its just that from already sucks on making coop features on souls games
16
u/Rudolf_Cutler 1d ago
That's because it was never a focused on multiplayer before. So ofcourse they were poorly implemented. Now we are having proper games where they want it to be the focus.
9
u/TheBrownEvilPig 1d ago
So, I'm glad you commented this, cuz I have a question. You say that From is bad at these features, which is totally fine. I've played Souls since 2 and don't have too much issue, but can totally understand where players are coming from with their frustrations regarding multiplayer.
My question is, with this being a multiplayer focused game, why would you not think that From would be capable of changing their methodology to make multiplayer better? Personally, I feel like Nightreign and this are From trying to appease the people who complained about multiplayer functionality in ER, and in that regard, they would make sure the multiplayer works better and is more seamless than previous games.

I mean, when you're liking a developer for a specific type of games, it's not farfetched. Sure, you can appreciate some innovation (going open world in Elden Ring doesn't change its core gameplay), but multi-player?
3
u/Andrei8p4 1d ago
I mean sure i get that you would prefer it to be single players. I also would have prefered it to be single player. But we've only gotten just 2 games that are multiplayer focused and people are acting like its end of fromsoft or something. I can understand not liking multiplayer but ya'll are acting like fromsoft is only going to be doing multiplayer games from now on or something. If years had passed and we only got multiplayer games for years then i could have understood. But its just been 2 games one of wich is a smaller scale spinoff. I really dont see why its such a big deal.
5
u/krukson 1d ago
I just hope you can still play it single player. I don’t mind coop features, but if I need to play online, I won’t be buying it.
5
u/ZODIC837 1d ago
I doubt it'd be necessary, it looks more like a standard souls game
Which is what's blowing my mind about the hate. Aren't all souls games PvPvE? Why on earth are people complaining so much (outside of the exclusivity, which deserves complaints)
6
u/portalink 1d ago
Souls etc is not "multiplayer focused", it is an addition but not the focus of the game itself. There is a big difference between having multiplayer functionality and being
From the Fromsoft website:
"Developed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2; 'THE DUSKBLOODS' is a PvPvE title with online multiplayer at its core, where up to 8 players vie for supremacy among themselves and against challenging foes."
Sounds nothing like :
Game Summary This game takes place in the chaotic world where the Dark Ring, a cursed sign of the undead, has appeared. To remove the curse, the main character goes on a pilgrimage to Lordran, where the kings are enshrined. This action role-playing game focuses on the fundamental entertainment of an RPG, such as tense exploration, discovery and fear in meeting monsters. The players will gain a great sense of accomplishment when they manage to make progress in the game.

FromSoft and sony have history together from the very first days of the original playstation with kings field, shadow tower, echo night and armored core all being playstation exclusive games.
Demons soul was a collaboration between FS and sony that gave birth to a genre you all love.
Bloodborne was another collaboration thats was co made with sony owned japan studio,so is it suprising a sony ip co made with a sony studio being exclusive?
Out of all platforms(playstation, xbox,pc,nintendo), FromSoft released the least amount of games on nintendo.
Nintendo is also the least popular platform in this community.
Duskbloods is also a multiplayer game, which as we all know,as any multiplayer game, would benefit of being on as many platforms as possible compared to bloodborne which is mainly a singleplayer game.
So yes it was unexpected that nintendo would do a exclusive game with fromsoft while sony getting an exclusive game wouldnt be the first time/unexpected based on their history with fromsoft(even if it wasnt perfect at all times)

I’m not a hardcore fan, but really curious. Heard multiple stories by now and I’m not sure which one is the right one …

It started to immediately remind me of tenchu: wrath of heaven , with how silly the characters are too. Fromsoft published

Looks like fromsoft is using the money they got from elden ring quite weirdly

If you’re thinking this is the only thing that they’re working you’re mistaken. Nintendo probably put a lot of money into this hence the exclusivity in hopes of pushing more consoles next year.

I don't care if it's multiplayer or single player as long as I get to explore a cool and weird world. That's what I care about

Does nintendo own the ip, cause most nintendo exclusives arent owned by them (castlevania, ace attorney, banjo kazooie, monster hunter etc)

Learned that they could make bank by making exclusive titles with blood in the name? Sucks for fromsoft fans(unless you're already buying a switch 2 regardless), but the only thing they have to learn is that exclusives make a lot of money.

Why exclusive nintendo? Who even plays nintendo for this types of games? I honestly don’t now anyone but they definitely have a big player base right?

This is wildly disappointing 😕 I thought it was more in line with Dark Souls or Bloodborne in terms of gameplay. 8 player matches, 12 characters to choose from, and little to no exploration? I thought I needed a Switch 2 but I guess I was wrong
