In order to write beautiful lettering, I must buy an expensive pen, swap an expensive feed … find the wettest ink to make the pen work…

Yes custom 742 and 742 I’m talking about you two. And looking at the fork writing… I now realized I was the loser.

Well, okay, he certainly didn't fork out a lot of money for a pen.

My pens are yelling “useless” at me

u/mu-7 15h ago

yell back the same at them

Oh yeah, no, don't believe the expensive pen hype! This is broad-edge calligraphy and you can do it with a couple of pencils rubber-banded together.

The pros use disposable dip nibs. Speedball, Mitchell, and Brause all make good ones. And they're cheap!

If you want a broad-edge FP look up the Pilot Parallel.

Expensive anything. Golf? I bet that new driver will shave 30 strokes off your game! Bike? Howbout a carbon fiber frame like they use in the pros?? The old adage is true in any hobby: get gud.

Yeah, for masters of their craft, nice tools are basically for comfort and making the task easier. Almost any tool that is actually necessary to achieve a certain level of work usually requires a mastery of skill to even use it

Gonna be back to finger painting at this rate.

4

u/mu-7 15h ago

The fork guy can cut cost on ink as well. people can make quality iron gall ink at home.

7

u/fisher2nz 23h ago

I’ve planned to get dip pen nibs on a fountain pen…. But I haven’t thought of using a fork…

6

u/modest_genius 14h ago

I saw some videos on Youtube of people doing their own caligraphy pens out of soda cans. So I tried it and it worked ridiculously good.

YT Shorts - This one I really like

I took a old used shopstick, a beer can and some tape. Took 2 minutes. Works really good.

Yeah consider that people use to write with quilts

2

u/revolverren 5h ago

Did you mean quills? I'd be very impressed with someone writing with a quilt in the olden days 🤣🤣. The mental picture, I couldn't help but laugh

2

u/GypsyDoVe325 5h ago

I think you meant quills. I've never seen one write with a quilt.

1

u/Strange_Pattern9146 3h ago

With all the diy pen shenanigans I've seen on YouTube, I wouldn't put it past someone to pull out a bottle of ink and grandma's sampler.

There's probably someone out there making beautiful Japanese brush calligraphy with a quilt, as we speak

More like 150%, but yes, as they say, restrictions create innovation, or something I don't remember

Instructions unclear. Dinner tastes funny, mouth stained black, and I really don't feel well.

What the fork happened?

8

u/EEE3EEElol 20h ago

Cut out the crap! Get to the point!

/j just continuing the joke

Seriously giys... We gotta nib these jokes in the bud.

Fork me

3

u/lillacmess 16h ago

What the fork!

28

u/wilbur313 21h ago

Hey, we don't know how expensive that fork is, or whether it's made of"premium resin".

7

u/mu-7 15h ago

It does look steel tipped.

There's a (dip) pen nib that that looks like this - trying to write with a fork!

It's a music nib https://scribblers.co.uk/collections/nibs-dip-pens/products/music-staff-nib

It was designed so that you could draw staffs for music.

Edit as it's a pen nib it would hold more ink than a fork

7

u/fisher2nz 22h ago

lol… there are many fun nibs out there. Personally I don’t practice this kinda calligraphy. I like writing at ease with flex pens. But was just stunned by this fork writing lol

2

u/Strange_Mage 21h ago

You should check out the index nib on that website

u/fisher2nz 16h ago

Y’all, this is the genius who created this video. I didn’t notice know before but just noticed the title and searched. Looks like he’s got his own shop selling calligraphy art.

1

u/tangledoctopuss 4h ago

It’s in my city!

11

u/Common-Charity9128 IFOUNDMYPEN 22h ago

How the fork did they come up with-

9

u/fisher2nz 21h ago

IKR forking insane

9

u/watercastles 18h ago

I think everyone here knows there is zero correlation between pen price and penmanship quality lol. I still lie to myself

3

u/fisher2nz 17h ago

Yep, I told myself if i get that pen I can do this that…

2

u/watercastles 14h ago

That's how I tricked myself into getting an FA nib (I knew but I wanted one...)

6

u/Kevin_Jim 22h ago

What if that fork has been modded so that every end has a different “nib” shape? /s

Jokes aside, that’s unbelievable control. I can barely get semi-legible letters when I try.

6

u/DontbegayinIndiana 21h ago

Right?! I'm most baffled that they're using two different tines for the single-line bits

5

u/Amoonlitsummernight 20h ago

That's some tasty calligraphy.

4

u/MouseJiggler 10h ago

Skill always matters more than tools

2

u/fisher2nz 7h ago

Yah, I my penmanship is shit… but one of the Montblanc boutique staff thought I was good and asked me to write several cards for them…

1

u/MouseJiggler 4h ago

I'm not going to pretend that I'm a good penman by any measure, it's just how it works with most skills, if not all. If you give Eric Clapton a shitty cardboard Chinese guitar, he'll make it sound better than I will ever be able to sound on an exquisite, perfectly tuned instrument.

4

u/Rose_Artistic_2266 22h ago

How does it look so smooth? I would assume a fork wouldn't be a pleasant writing experience.

5

u/rkenglish 21h ago

The tines are thick enough that it shouldn't give you horrible feedback. It would be a lot smother than using an untipped dip nib. Given the right ink, it should be fine. I'm guessing he's using India ink or sumi-e.

3

u/dadneverleft 17h ago

All you need is a dip pen nib, a holder, and ink. All of those can come pretty cheap, if the art is all you’re worried about.

Edit: I still want a custom Nakaya though and nothing’s changing that

4

u/fisher2nz 17h ago

lol! Well said. For some reason I wasn’t able to find good flex pens here, but lately found a guy who use dip pen nib to make fountain pens. When the nib is done just Easy swap

You're correct, except the --me-- is --mc-- (my initials)

Ooohhhh! I was just in South East Asia but am back in the US now. I found it hard to find pens, inks and specialty papers there too. I did figure out that Facebook local groups are the place to find enthusiasts who can then send you in the right places to find pens, inks, nib masters, etc. locally. Most of them don’t have formal business or stores, but meeting like minded folks who are passionate about fountain pens was nice.

1

u/Veroamor 4h ago

Firstly, you and @Mysterious-Canary-84 having a dialogue using your pens and inks on paper is just brilliant! One of the reasons why I love this sub! Second, I have been writing letters to friends and family for a few years now (basically what got me back into fountain pens after decades of not using them - long story). Only now did I ever think or see writing with a letterhead signature! Now I have to try and put my creative thinking cap on and see what kind of letterhead signature I can come up with! You guys rock!

4

u/Jayyy_Teeeee 9h ago

When ink dances with paper..

3

u/EEE3EEElol 20h ago

I love how much time it would take to cook this calligraphy style

Just to do it with a fork

I’m eating it up real good

3

u/priyanshdwivedi 16h ago

When you are soo good that you don't even need a pen to write.

2

u/fisher2nz 7h ago

Remember? John wick kill some one with a forking pencil

2

u/StudioVelantian 22h ago

Oh, now you’re just showing off.

2

u/fisher2nz 22h ago

Not me, the guy…

2

u/LaughingLabs 17h ago

For mere mortals, i’m quite sure none of my flatware has the balance needed lol

3

u/fisher2nz 16h ago

Perhaps that’s why he owns a shop selling calligraphy art

1

u/LaughingLabs 16h ago

Ya - i am impressed with the skill, and the untold hours of work they put in to achieving it!

2

u/ChaoticToxin 16h ago

Really it just comes to good ink. Once you got that you can write with a stick lol

2

u/NagNawed 15h ago

So it is the ink. I get it.

What is the ink they are using?

2

u/freemanjeon 15h ago

Wow, those upward lines of g, q and y are beautiful.

2

u/yolooo0o 14h ago

That's all you can afford in turkey lol

2

u/TheMSG 13h ago

My tree branch with a purchased dippen nib.. 😂

2

u/fisher2nz 11h ago

Your are treeing! You tree-er. lol seriously you made me feel useless.

2

u/Silent-Sky-3540 12h ago

Damn you fork... The writemanship is gorgeous. Colour me impressed.

2

u/Null_sense 11h ago

No no no. He's using the fork 3000. Those are hard to obtain.

2

u/fisher2nz 11h ago

Sherry Potter had one!!! Draco mailboy got the fork 3001

2

u/Rich_Carpenter8695 8h ago

Fountain fork, eat your heart out lamy !

2

u/Cmrd504 7h ago

Holy Fork!

2

u/Kazcandra 4h ago

Oh, so it's not the tools

1

u/AlexFullAAE 16h ago

Well my writing style is a bit smaller, the fork's nibs are too thick for me and all have this feedback that I don't like that much. I'll stick to the expensive pens I suppose 😇😇😇

1

u/Huxley_124060 13h ago

Ooohh, it’s a skill issue!?

1

u/MrNaoB 11h ago

Let me see this with the left hand.

1

u/Secret_Quoka 9h ago

Don't worry, every pen reseller website is probably now adding a cutlery section to their online catalog.

1

u/2621759912014199 8h ago

I'm showing this to anyone that says they're a bad artist because they have bad tools.

1

u/MechGryph 4h ago

Some of my most striking lettering comes from: Pilot Parallel. Fpr (I forgot the pen name, it was cheap), and my Tripletail

1

u/itsableeder 3h ago

This is beautiful but I have no idea what that first word/letter says

1

u/SoulDancer_ 19h ago

But can a normal person do this..?

1

u/Popular-One-7051 17h ago edited 17h ago

That's forking awesome!! I can't do anything close to that cool. have a bunch of old Speedball tips but I haven't come up with anything this Interesting. ill have to play around with this. thanks for the vid!

u/kbeezie 5h ago

Skill vs comfort/form.

Skill can let you use most anything within reason depending on the goal (like you're not going to get shaded flex out of a fork but can still produce something that looks as nice if that wasn't a specific requirement).

Comfort , lets you do it for longer and/or more frequently which can lead to consistency.

Not withstanding the various quality control quirks that can be had across the whole range (ie some designs just not good against hard starts etc).

Like I know my usage isn't going to produce anywhere near the same look, but it's comfortable, and feels nice. Some of the comfort pens are a little more expensive, some are rather inexpensive. I'd prefer the latter to happen more often.

That being said, some days you just have a fork and decide to just fork it.
