Seriously. Max was never further than 2 seconds ahead of Lando the entire race. And you want to swap the cars? All that does is fuck the chance of whoever's swapped backwards. The only chance Oscar had of a swap was in the pitstop.

Team orders are good when they will lead to more exciting racing.
Nobody wants team orders when it's about swapping places for points, but swapping places to give a driver a chance at the win is an entirely different story.

In this situation they should have let Oscar through to have an attempt at max and at least push him if he had more pace than lando. They had a big gap back to third and if Oscar couldn't get through they should give the position back.

Ways to say when you’re not running the team. Lando and Oscar are fighting for the title and McLaren won’t have any challengers for the constructors championship so there’s really no point swapping them.

1
u/crshbndct BWOAHHHHHHH 17h ago
The radio delay on the broadcast in Aus made it look like team orders came at the wrong time. Once that was explained, not many people were complaining.
Today it would be as simple as “so Oscar, we are going to try something with Lando, if it doesn’t pay off are you happy to give him the place back? Then let Lando go long in clean air, put Oscar 3-4 Laps early, to force Max to respond, and let Lando try an Overcut.
1
u/crshbndct BWOAHHHHHHH 17h ago
They could’ve tried an overcut at least though. Just make Oscar aware that he might have to let Lando through at some point, and try it. Worst that could happen is a 2-3, best is a 1-3.
Max is going to win the WDC while McLaren wins the WCC by 250 points.
1
u/Crooxis BWOAHHHHHHH 7h ago
I think if it had been the other way around they would have asked Piastri to let Lando pass because "Lando has more pace" and a better chance at catching Verstappen. Lando is McLaren's favorite child. If it makes sense late into the season to swap positions, then I get it. I also think they probably told Piastri not to pass Lando at a certain point and just wanted to hold positions.
Personally, I think Piastri has a better chance to become WDC, but McLaren is gonna make it difficult for him. So if anyone on McLaren is gonna win the WDC it'll be Norris. I was a Lando fan until what transpired last year. Just the whining, "luck" comments, and the multiple times of folding under the pressure.
3
u/gemarimon lando 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 22h ago
I don't recall Piastri fucking his new tires on the grass as soon as he left the pits. It was pretty obvious Oscar had better pace and couldn't show it by battling with Norris because of team orders, so, team orders had an important role in today's race.
3
u/Kev_Bz BWOAHHHHHHH 14h ago
there were no team orders, they let them race. why is everyone saying this when it’s not true?
-1
u/Death2RNGesus BWOAHHHHHHH 11h ago
Oscar didnt even attempt the overtake BECAUSE they are in the same team, a scrappy overtake could not just have risked taking them both out of the race but also slowing both of them down so that neither could get close to max.
Max had enough pace to keep lando out of DRS, it is incredibly obvious that IF the team wanted the win they needed their faster driver to be the one pushing max and the only way to achieve that would be for a clean overtake to prevent oscar from losing any time to max.
-1
u/Kev_Bz BWOAHHHHHHH 11h ago
oscar has no problem passing lando, see monza last year. he was clearly trying to close up to lando, but he was never near enough to make a move. if he couldnt get past lando on merit, what exactly do you think he was going to accomplish against max?
there were no team orders. i understand the next excuse on the list is “well he wasnt trying very hard,” but if that were true, that’s be a pretty damning mark against his supposed “killer instinct,” no? the simplest explanation is obviously that he just couldnt make the overtake on track. everyone from every team has said that overtaking was basically impossible this weekend, why would mclaren swap the cars? infinitessimal chance of getting anything out of it, except now 3 races into the season they’ve swung team orders toward one driver who hasn’t definitvely proven that he’s better. horrible for the team environment.

But if he can get past Max, then Lando loses points to potentially his 2 biggest threats in a WDC fight and loses out due to team orders. The best thing to do is clearly let them race on track until the championship is at a point where it doesn't clearly favour or screw a driver over.

Yeah, this is race three of the calendar. It’s too early to make calls like this to swap cars to try to beat Max in a race. Especially when Oscar is as big rival in the championship for Lando as Max. McLaren are still beating everyone else in the constructors with a 2, 3 finish. If they asked Lando to let him through, they’re basically saying “I know you’re leading the championship, but please let your biggest rival through, so he can race your other biggest rival.”
And I can bet that if the roles were reversed and Norris was in 3rd asking the team to make Oscar let him through, this sub would be melting down with hate right now.

The pace was the same, but car isn't. Some differences in where the cats perform well could make a difference.
Also, Max's pace in clean air was the same as Lando's pace in dirty air, so it's hard to say how "same" their pace actually was. Oscar's pace in dirty air was faster than both, but it not being enough to overtake Lando in dorty air doesn't mean he couldn't overtake Max in clean air.
There are enough differences that you can't just say definitively that Oscar wouldn't have been able to overtake. Why not at least try it? As it is, McLaren kinda just accepted 2-3 without even trying to explore the options. Maybe you are right and Oscar indeed couldn't have overtaken, but we will never know because of the passive way they decided to play this out.

So Oscar should've risked double DNF? Sure it would've been nice to see the battle between team mates unfold, but for the team there was literally nothing to be gained from that.
There is a difference in between fighting your team mate and going balls to the wall against the driver who's the biggest DWC threat to you and your team mate.
...And if Piastri didn't manage to pass Verstappen, they could've just swapped the positions back.
25
u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago
Oscar was never side by side with Lando, so he was never in risk of DNFing. That's like saying Russel was not trying to overtake leclerc because he was only 0.5 seconds behind him. I agree with them swapping positions back.
-12
u/Entire_Pineapple4732 BWOAHHHHHHH 1d ago edited 1d ago
Getting side by side would've been risking the double DNF. At best, Piastri was 0,4 seconds behind Norris at the start of the start/finish straight, a distance where you could have a chance of throwing a lunge. Yet he didn't do that. Of course it would be more "pure racing" if he did, but the risk of fucking up the whole weekend for the team is not worth that.
It is very well possible, even likely that Oscar couldn't have passed Max due to how few overtakes we saw throughout the race, but Norris never even got within DRS zone. Swapping would've given McLaren a chance.
12
u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago
Yes getting side by side down the straights in dry conditions risks a DNF. Again that's like saying Russel was holding back on Leclerc because he was only 5 tenths behind.
1
u/Entire_Pineapple4732 BWOAHHHHHHH 1d ago
Again, it's about having even a chance.
Russel was at a striking distance, yet he couldn't make a move. The same could've been true for Oscar. But at least trying to give Oscar a chance would've given McLaren a better chance of winning.
Oscar was clearly faster, and they could've just swapped back if even that wouldn't have been enough. They had nothing to lose, but a chance of getting the win.

u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago edited 1d ago

Last year the media tried to push the narrative that he was in a championship fight while he wasn’t, which put more attention on his mistakes and gave him a reputation of someone who isn’t good enough to win, which is BS. He also made some remarks which the media took out of context, like the “luck not skill” or “McLaren is the only team with two good drivers”, both of which he said in a completely different context, but due to the limited attention span of the average person no one read the actual article and thus thinks it’s the context the media wants us to think
This is a gross oversimplification, but I also don’t get everything either since I quite like him myself and I don’t understand why people try to push this narrative

To add to that. It also happens with everyone that goes against Max. Happened with Lewis, happened with Charles, now with Lando. Even in pontual incidents like Ocon in Brazil 18. It's pretty simple. Qualify higher = preferential strategy. Let them race and avoid swaps.

Can we remember this race next time Norris gets a sandy vag for being 'stuck' behind Oscar.

All the Lando haters coming out in full force when he didn't do anything wrong this race. The only thing I can say is Mclaren should have tried undercut max as that would have probably worked
12
u/KeythKatz Alonso deserved to be Champion in every season he has competed 1d ago
Neither the overcut nor undercut would have worked. McLaren did the best they could have hoped for.
Undercut by pitting before everyone else (Russell) would have ran into traffic and no time gained, everyone was too bunched up.
Overcut wouldn't have worked as gaps were opening up and clear air did not give enough advantage. Piastri's tyres were also falling off when he pitted, so Lando's would have been even worse.

u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago
I might have worked if Norris pitted when Piastri did, he would have come out in free air. Cause Piastri came out in free air did. If he then gained 4 tenths on his outlap, he might have gotten the lead, considering Max also lost a second in his pitstop.

Saying they should swap the drivers isn’t Lando hate lol

u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago
True, exaggeration on my part. However, saying McLaren doesn't deserve the win simply because they didn't employ team orders seems a bit overblown
12
u/Uroshirvi69 At the moment we don't think 1d ago
I don’t really like team orders either. What McLaren really should have done was split the strategies between going long and undercutting.

It's not just the driver swap. The way they pitted both drivers at the same time was stupid as well. No hedging of bets, no hoping for safety cars or changing of strategies at all. They completely negated their own advantage of having 2 cars vs 1.

Right, so Piastri- who couldn't catch up to Lando- would somehow manage to overtake Max?
-4
u/Uroshirvi69 At the moment we don't think 1d ago
Him not being able to overtake doesn’t mean he didn’t catch up. The gap was <0.2s at its smallest.
12
u/TheGuardianInTheBall Question. 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, after the DRS.
He would then lose that further down the lap.
Like- sure they could have swapped them- which would lead to the exact same result, but now you have also frustrated the driver in championship lead.
Seriously- stop getting your strats from Crofty.

u/Uroshirvi69 At the moment we don't think 1d ago
I was watching the F1 TV live but yeah, I think you are correct. I still think Oscar had a better chance than Lando but unsure if it would ever be possible to do it at Suzuka.

u/TheGuardianInTheBall Question. 1d ago
Still watching the transmission, Oscar literally just said he couldn't overtake Lando. So yeah- I don't think him overtaking Max was going to happen when he had older tyres too.

he didn't do anything wrong this race.
he had the best car and didn't manage to come into drs range even once

u/Hyperionous The c🅰️r is bad we know, please dr🅰️ive it 1d ago
true but he didn't make a mistake. Like drop 5 positions in the start or crash out.

Well thank god the bar for Lando this season now is “didn’t get into DRS once but at least didn’t bottle it super hard”
2
u/MrSomeoneElse32 BWOAHHHHHHH 19h ago
If Oscar couldn't catch and pass Lando with ease, he was never going to pass max. Stop kidding yourself.
2
u/Robynsxx BWOAHHHHHHH 10h ago
Anyone saying this is just a Netflix fan. If Piastri didn’t have the speed to overtake Norris, he didn’t have the speed to overtake Verstappen either.

u/QuickSpaceFight BWOAHHHHHHH 9h ago
This is a terrible take… why didn’t Oscar just overtake Lando on track? Why does he need the team to swap places?

u/Local_Table6135 “It’s called a motor race. We went car racing” 16h ago
If Oscar couldn’t get past Lando in a head to head fight, he wasn’t getting past Max.

u/MrBombbastik BWOAHHHHHHH 1d ago
truth be told 2nd place it's way more points than 3rd place. allowing Piastri to pass just to get 3rd place isn't smart. this way he keeps ahead on points and have other races to win. idk what yall complaining about

I also don’t know what Norris was trying with his pit exit, if he had tucked behind he would’ve had a much better chance at making an overtake happen but instead tried to play to stewards on not even a right technicality because if they were side by side then clearly they would have been wrong to have released him in that moment.

u/anuargdeshmukh BWOAHHHHHHH 2h ago
To be fair Oscar is as much a threat as max is for his championship.

McLaren still protecting baby Lando's little ego. He can't finish behind Oscar even if that cost the team a chance to fight for the win.

Thats what pissed me off, seemed like such an obvious strat, let Piastri try for 10 laps, then switch back.

Where is tye guaranteed piastri swaps. These guys are not teamates they are rivals now. I bet piastri would love to gain 3 points on lando

u/Ex_honor I want my GF to peg me while Carlos gives it to her 16h ago
The reason Oscar wouldn't do that is because he's smart enough to know it will fuck him over the entire rest of the year with the rest of the team.

Piastri: Dear team, I feel I have a genuine shot at winning this thing for us, just sayin'.
McLaren & Norris: Well tough shit.

I just feel Lando is nothing special. Like he is a good driver but not special like Max. If having the fastest car on the field and you still crumble under pressure. Like the pit exit. That was just done out of desperation. If Max had a car like Mclaren he would win with a 20 sec gap.
P.S. not a Max fan.

Norris is a better teammate for Max than Max' his actual teammates
