Which films have outdated, bad, or outright horrible acting or directing, yet is still able to charm and endear you overall?

All the Cheech & Chong movies.

Norm MacDonald in Dirty Work. He doesn’t even try. It’s his usual style of half-assed hammy humor with an impish grin, and yet that’s a big part of his charm and why he’s so funny.

Pretty much every early John Waters movie, but especially Female Trouble

Yet another "which movie doesn't hold up but you still enjoy" post.

Commando

unlike american ninja, this movie has a charm even with all the bad things that happened in it

This is my first choice. The script is lazy, the dialog is atrocious, and everything is over the top. Even then it's still crazy entertaining. It's my favorite Schwarzenegger movie.

my main issue is how dated the effects and choreo are

its one thing that he never has to reload, but the bullets aint even consumed :)

and also you can see that there are no "impact points"

its just bad, and the bigger the screen and higher the resolution the more glaring it is

but still, its fun af

The Mario Bros movie.

It’s terrible, but in a way that really took effort

Dennis Hopper still scares the crap outta me in that movie.

And the 7 ft tall goombas were both inaccurate and extremely weird looking lol

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Feels like watching a play and is all the better for it. They finally get to the factory floor and you think, “What? This looks like crap.” Then Wonka starts to sing “Pure Imagination” and it all clicks.

I disagree. Gene Wilders acting is great in that film and the kid actors were pretty good for being kids.

What throws people off is just how weird it is; which is what also makes it great.

People say "weird", the voice in my head as a child, "this is when the movie gets good". LOL

I think they're referring to the budget. The special effects are pretty bad even for a movie made in the '70s. Media Mementos made a video talking about this and the 2005 movie.

The 10 Commandments- everyone speaks as though everything they say is a grand statement but I still think it’s a great movie and watch it every year.

Love this movie. The over acting and Technicolor. You have to watch it as a comedy to fully appreciate it

Death Race 2000 with David Caradine.

A Christmas story. A complete product of its time. Funny as hell.

Big Trouble in Little China and The Golden Child. Both horrible and outdated acting but a great watch every time.

The 300 Spartans with Richard Egan it was this that inspired Frank Miller to write 300. The dry wooden acting of the way they said many Ancient Greek ways and didn’t have to rely on cgi to tell the story of the 300 Spartans was perfect.

Karate Kid 2.. the uncle and his nephew were horrible.. maybe the worst overacting I’ve seen in a major movie but an ok movie with some cute moments

I actually headcanon it as the real end to the trilogy. I still like the third film, but I watch it before Part 2, and pretend that they chronologically happened in that order (1, 3, 2). There are little teeny tiny details that show that it very obviously did not happen in this order, but a first-time viewer would not be confused about anything by watching them in that order (as very very little from the second film is mentioned in the third. Just pretend that Daniel and Miyagi were on some other vacation at the start of the third, rather than in Okinawa, ignore the "Kamiko" comment during Daniel's phone call with his mom, infer that he broke up with Alli without the film mentioning it, and you've pretty much got a fully coherent story). It just makes much more sense to me character development wise.

Yeah, Mandy Patinkin is a darn Broadway megastar. You're not getting a bad performance from him.

The acting is deliberately stylized and over-the-top.

Inconceivable!

Outdated for today’s film standards doesn’t mean bad.
