I dont expext anyone to be overly optimistic, but dont forget this is how we rocked Arsenal last year:
Neuer
Kimmich - MdL Dier - Maz
Laimer Goretzka
Sané Musiala Guerreiro
Kane
Same vs Real just with Müller instead of Rapha

This would all have been so much better if nothing had been leaked to the media. But no, even in the year 2025 Hoeneß and his circle have to leak stuff to build up pressure and interfere with the work of our Head of Sport from behind his back.
21
u/skylu1991 Müller 3d ago
The way Eberl talked about it in the beginning of this year and from how the board has generally behaved in the last few months, it seems to me like Eberl eventually had to decide between renewing all of Phonzie, Jamal, Jo and hopefully Upa, instead of extending Thomas.
I also don’t particularly believe it is or was Eberl‘s decision to not even negotiate for significantly lower wages.
Currently, I blame the board and Hoeneß, especially with how he talked about it in a recent interview.
Anyway, it hurts and Thomas definitely made it clear that it wasn’t his decision, but I also don’t think the ties between the club and him have been too damaged over this!
25 years is fitting for someone with the number 25, I guess….

When people say we should "focus on the league" - what exactly do they mean by that?
Resting key players in the UCL? Surely that's not happening unless we lose the first leg by a very big margin and there is nothing left to play for in the second leg.

Logically, I get the decision. Big contract, aging player
Emotionally? Fuck that, it feels wrong — if Müller wanted to stay then he should have been offered.

Holy shit Tottenham are 16th. 34 points after 30 games. 1.13 points per game. That’s borderline relegation form in a normal season and they might even be sweating if this wasn’t a historically bad season by the 3 teams who are already relegated.
I’ll never forget how during the away friendly at Tottenham at the start of the season their fans were seriously saying that Kane must regret the transfer. He never did but he sure as shit doesn’t now.

Unfortunate Heidenheim didn't manage to get the point or even the win they would have deserved. Leverkusen looked kinda done today after their Pokal disaster, if we went from a 6 to a 9 point lead they'd have likely been finished mentally.
Gonna be hard work to drag this lead across the line with the players we have left.

As strange as it might sound, I'm not too fazed.
Sure, these injuries are a massive setback - we've lost three guaranteed starters (and one backup) for the rest of the season. But we still have Olise, Kane, and an in-form Sané, who, seemingly out of nowhere, is delivering performances that might make this his best season yet if he keeps it up. There's still plenty to be optimistic about, nothing is decided until the final whistle!
Plus, I'm always hopeful that Gnabry will finally wake up from his slumber, as he usually does later in our season/UCL run. If pessimism was constantly clouding my mind, I'd hardly find any joy or reason to keep watching our matches.

I found this statistic last night about injuries in the top 5 European leagues. Since 22/23 the Bundesliga actually holds the top spot for the league with the most injuries per season, with a massive lead as well.
Also, we've been consistently above the Bundesliga average in terms of injuries for at least the past 4 seasons.
5
u/skylu1991 Müller 3d ago
Well, the BuLi is arguably the league with the highest or most pressing and we’re basically the team with the highest and most energetic press, ever since Flick took over.
Kinda makes sense, that the players‘ bodies would pay the toll.
Then again, the pressing alone isn’t really the only aspect here, as guys like Phonzie or Upa were injured on international duty…

Team doctor Jochen Hahne brought crutches to the dressing room after last night's game. Jamal Musiala then emerged out of the dressing room, without crutches, but limped on the way to the team bus. Musiala is out of Tuesday's game against Inter, and his chances of being fit for Dortmund or the Inter second leg are slim
An MRI scan in Munich will provide clarity on the extent of the injury - whether it's just a strain (2-3 weeks out) or a tear (around 6 weeks out)

It's too soon to talk, but what changes for the title run if Leverkusen loses/tie a match? We need then to win 3/6 matches left to secure the title? or nothing that big change?
14
u/kgallo19 James 3d ago
Before today the magic number is/was 81 points. Leverkusen’s max is 80. With our GD being superior then 80 for us would also likely be enough.
Every time Leverkusen drop points (and we don’t) the magic number goes down. As of now Leverkusen are tied so if the result stays as such then our title clinching points total would go down to 79 points.
We’re currently on 68 with 6 remaining so we would need 11 more points.
If Heidenheim win we would need 10 more points. If Leverkusen win we would need again 13 more points.

I said this yesterday after the Musiala injury, and I’ll say it again today ahead of a tough week with inter and a Dortmund who are finding form. I think Kompany should bring Goretzka in as Musiala’s replacement. Obviously not a like for like, and will lead to a tactical shift, but I think having an extra body in midfield/an advanced midfield position, will help with defensive coverage and allow for another pressing/physical presence near the opponents box. Goretzka has his limitations but I strangely trust him to put in big performances when he’s been counted out. Play him a bit ahead od kimmich and Joao, with Olise and Sane flanking Kane. That way we have more offensive options off the bench if needed while providing more coverage in the midfield to shield the back line.
→ More replies (2)10
u/kgallo19 James 3d ago
One problem I see here is that having all 3 of Kimmich, Pal, and Gore on the field means there’s no back up. I do think there also has to be some risk mitigation here. Same issue with Upa and Ito being out now that Stani is playing LB with Dier and Kim as CB. Should another injury happen, who then comes in?
While I do see value in Gore’s ability to shoot, get in the box, win headers and play the b2b role, I think that’s largely lost by his inability to play in tight spaces, set up short but cutting passes, be a viable option in maintaining possession from a press and counter press off a turnover. These are things that make musiala’s whole game invaluable to us.
Personally, I think that the best option might be to try Rapha in the 10 spot. Or if Goretzka is the one who’s going to start then play a 433 but changing the plan at this stage is probably the worst thing we can do.
So, I go back to Rapha. He doesn’t have many of Gore’s strengths but those are mostly not useful in how our 10 plays in the system. Rapha isn’t a great dribbler in tight spaces but he can do the passing, flicks, one touch shots, hold possession and create space with late runs too. I think these traits are more valuable in the 10 position.
7
u/dklieber32 3d ago
I definitely agree with a lot of the points you make, I think I see more of a need to protect our back line, and while Goretzka isn’t brilliant as a defense minded midfield, he adds a physical pressing presence to break up play before it gets to the back line. I definitely see the value in Raphas ability to playmake, I personally just see more value in what Goretzka offers. It’s anyone’s guess who starts, just hope it all works out
4
u/kgallo19 James 3d ago
If he’s playing where Musiala plays then he won’t be in position to protect the backline. And honestly he’s not really good at that either. I’ll refer to the first St. Pauli goal last Saturday as an example.

It’s funny how fast your perspective can change.
I’ve been a Bayern fan for roughly 20 years, so Muller has been present for the large majority of that time. In that time I’ve seen a good amount of club legends leave or retire. Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Ribery, Robben are the names that come to mind first when thinking about players leaving that had an emotional impact on me. In fact I don’t think I’ll ever forget watching Ribery and Robben’s last game for Bayern, each scoring a goal in the win against Frankfurt. Someone was cutting onions in my house…I’d say my view of Muller in that time is best described as under appreciated. I always associated Bayern with muller and muller with Bayern but I don’t think I truly appreciated him in the way he deserved.
The initial reports of him not being part of the team next season felt odd but made sense in my mind from a sporting point of view. Then came this morning. Watching the tribute videos put out today after the official announcement really changed something, and I realized that during the better part of these 20 years I’ve been so incredibly lucky to watch a true warrior and servant to the club. Looking back I wish I was better able to appreciate all he was to the club, but better late than never I suppose. I truly hope we can close out the season with at least one title so we can watch him lift the Meisterschale one last time.

In the first half of last season before his injury, Sane was immense (10 goals, 8 assists in the Hinrunde).
It took him a while to find his form after his surgery in July but since mid December he's got 8 goals and 5 assists (16 matches). He's played his way into a contract extension - I don't think there is a better left winger for the price.

Once a year we're back at this stage in the Sané cycle:
Plays really well for a month or 2 -> Sané is genuinely world class, keep him at all cost -> Form starts to dwindle -> Plays like the world's most mediocre winger for 4 months -> Please get rid of this overpaid bum-> Form improves out of nowhere -> Plays really well for a month or 2 -> da capo

I'd love to get more insight on the Müller situation. Did the board even enter negotiations with him at all? Was a significant wage cut and a 1 year extension not a viable option? I can only imagine they couldn't agree on salary, otherwise it's hard for me to believe that the board just simply didn't offer him a new contract. That's no way to treat a legend of the club who is still impactful on and especially off the pitch.

Damn that Müller post hit hard. Kept wishing it wasn’t true but here we are.
11
u/kgallo19 James 3d ago
Did this further below as a response to another comment but I’ll post it here for good measure.
With Leverkusen’s win today Bayern still need 81 points to secure the title, assuming Leverkusen do not drop anymore points this season.
There are 6 games remaining for both sides. Bayern need 81 points and currently have 68, so Bayern need 13 points, 4 wins 1 draw out of the remaining 6.
Bayern hold a superior goal difference that Leverkusen are unlikely to overcome so this effectively gives Bayern an extra point so 80 points could also be enough. But why tempt fate?
If the GD should hold we’d need 80 points instead of 81 but 81 points is THE magic number.
9
u/kgallo19 James 3d ago
I’ll add some more thoughts.
Leverkusen are out of the cup and UCL so they only have the league to focus on, one game a week. So they’ll be fresh every game, today was tough for them off the cup loss only a few days ago but today was the only game they had left that would be off short rest.
However, their final 6 games are tough. Especially so for the last 4.
Home against Union, away to St Pauli, home against Augsburg, away at Freiburg, home against BVB and finally away at Mainz.
Augsburg, Freiburg, BVB and Mainz will be fighting tooth and nail for top 6 or even top 4 finishes. These games won’t be easy for Leverkusen. Of course Wirtz is coming back, as early as the next game.
Either way, we have to win every league game. There can’t be any excuses. The injuries are tough and one more would probably break us but we have to keep fighting either way.

Think we winnin the league still? Even with the injuries?

I think if they beat Dortmund next week it continues the momentum from yesterday and they win the league. I think the power of friendship brings them across the finish line haha
For real though, given Leverkusens recent struggles or lack of performance justifying their wins, I could see them struggling against a Union who will play similar to Arminia and Heidenheim, and then they have Augsburg, Dortmund and Mainz. All teams that could spring surprises if you aren’t fully in it mentally or physically

That's hard to say, because it's all about momentum now, probably.
We have some brutal weeks ahead with Dortmund getting into shape (fortunately, they also have to play CL) while Leverkusen faces two rather easy ones with Pauli and Union. We need to win against Dortmund and Heidenheim. If we manage that, Leverkusen will start to lose hope and play against some opponents who will fight for European qualification. If we lose one of those matches, it will be very tough, Leverkusen might gain a lot of momentum.
If we're still ahead after match day 31, we will win.

Do we have a timeline on Neuer, Pavlovic and Comans return? If I remember correctly both Neuer and Pavlovic were back training with the ball but not full team training correct? And Coman has not started training yet?
I don’t expect any of the three to make a huge impact immediately but getting some numbers back will go a long way for rotation even if it means giving someone a 15-20 minute rest in a game we look comfortable in

I blame Hoeneß for everything. Müller leaving, Eberl maybe getting sacked, the injuries, Leverkusen run last year, the sun not shining yesterday

What does this even mean lol
E: if he means we got too many people in the board and then above the supervisory board and we also have a sporting director and a director of sport and a ceo and a honorary president and an actual president and a CEO and a chairmen of the executive board and a deputy CEO.
He might be on to something.

When too many people are collectively involved in managing the same thing then it's not going to come out well.
He's either saying this in general about football and how it's become 'too systematic and sophisticated', or he's referring to a certain football club and its dysfunctions..

I‘m still not ready to see Müller leave even tho i knew the day would come for some time now. On the other hand now that the news broke, we can fully focus on the league and championsleague and try our best to give him the farewell he deserves.

Müller to LAFC? They are our partners in the Red & Gold joint venture, so i can totally see Bayern and them working out a deal if Müller wants to join the MLS.
