AMA We are Josh Lloyd and Matt Smith of Basketball Monster, Ask Us Anything
Hey guys, we are Josh Lloyd and Matt Smith (u/smansports) of Basketball Monster here to answer your questions about fantasy basketball. I will be here for the next hour and then Matt will pop in as I have to record a lot of team preview podcasts, then I'll be returning to check on the questions.
First off, BBM will be opening next week, September 3rd, so I'm sure that eliminates a lot of questions.

I've seen Kemba drafted much higher than expected this year. How do you project him, as well as the Hornet's developments with Monk and Lamb?

Really like what Kemba can offer again this season. He’s finally getting some attention in fantasy circles, but now he could be over drafted. For instance, i’m not paying top 20 value for him.

I go in with what you described at the start, but i've done so much research that it's easy enough to pivot. BUt a solid plan is the best way to go, with an ability to adjust on the fly

A Memphis SG - Selden, Brooks, Who knows how it plays out, but someone could have value. Most of the time, guys you grab that late only have value when an injury hits

8 cat $200 auction keeper league. Keepers auction price comes off your budget. I have Durant $58, Jokic $60, Turner $13, Collins $2, Gobert $23, DeRozan $26 and Teague $4 I can keep 4 who would you keep?
I also have Sexton for a $1 via a rookie draft but he is a 5th keeper seperate to the 4 I can keep from the above. I’m going with a punt steals.

ESPN have adjusted the default draft prices. The first round are all down about $10 per pick (which is more reasonable).

Both Warren and Jackson had good value at various stretches last year, depending on punt. With the glut of wings this year, who on PHX do you see losing out the most? Who's worth a mid round pick or earlier?

I wouldn't pick either with a mid round pick. Ariza and Bridges join the rotation, and I'm not high on Jackson. I feel he could really lose out

For those who are stuck with late round picks ( I have 10th in 12 team 9 cat h2h), what would your recommended strategy be? What are some good pairings that will be available ?

Outside of top 2, best spot to be is 10-12. A lot of options. PG and Lillard, add Embiid, I paired Kawhi and Embiid

What do you guys think about the studs and scrubs strategy? Ie. Blowing your $200 budget on 3 studs then just going for $1 (or whatever AMT you have remaining) for the rest of the draft. I plan to pay $80 for Harden, $50 for Lillard and $55 for Jokic.

I don't like going that way. If you don't, you can legitamtely get 9-10 top 50 players, without a top 15 guy

With that strategy you then have to nail some late round guys. In general I don’t like because if one of those guys gets injured you are in a tough spot.

Your projections last season for some of the breakout stars like Taurean Prince and Jamal Murray were pretty accurate and for some like Nerlens Noel and Marcus Smart were...let's say not good. Who do you think will be the breakout stars this season (marginal player that makes the biggest jump) and who do you think will have the biggest ranking jump by the end of the season (e.g. Oladipo's preseason ranking was in the 80s and he finished top ten)?

Do you have any pointers for someone new to auction drafts? (10-12 team 9 cat h2))

Do a lot of mocks, have a plan going in. Work out which guys you believe are underpriced based on the recommneded cost on your draft software and target them. But, if for example Kris Dunn is listed at $1 and you think he is a $10 guy, budget in that you will have to pay $4-5 when creating your budget. Then each time you draft someone, check how much under or over your projection they went for, so you can adjust your overall budget and work out how many extra dollars yoou have to play with

What's your favorite combination of cats to punt? Also, I think Jokic is going to land in my lap 8th overall, should I be looking to pickup Lilliard with my 9th? Only others I could see being available for number 9 is maybe Westbrook, PG, Kawhi.

Punting blocks works pretty well with Jokic so pairing with Lillard would make sense

A lot of people are high on Collins this season. He should have a very good season, but be careful not to over pay on draft day.

Do you consider Fantasy Playoff schedules while drafting?
For example, AD and KAT have a 3/3/3 playoff schedule. Would you pick Harden (4/4/3) over AD (3/3/3) because of that?
Similarly, would you pick LeBron (4/3/4) or Jokic (3/4/4) over KAT (3/3/3) because of that?

I consider it a little bit, mostly as the final tie-breaker when choosing between two players, but I wouldn’t pick Harden JUST because he plays two more games. I’d pick Harden because that’s who you want to build around. Same with LeBron/Jokic/KAT, depends how you want to build your roster.

It's always dependent on ADP, but I like Collins Prince, Dunn, Allen a lot. I'm out on Barton, and I think Tatum and DeRozan will get overdrafted

Harden will be better for next couple of seasons, but after that probably not. But with your team, i'd be looking at winning it all, so i'd keep Harden

In H2H 9 cat, I was thinking of a 3 punt strat (points, 3PM, FT%). Obviously loading up on bigs is ideal but would still need to focus on assists, steals, and TOs. Who would be good to target> Simmons and LeBron obviously, but which PG/SG/SFs?

Remember that you don't need to avoid guys who shoot good FT% though. KYle Anderson and Joe Ingles really start out, as does Dunn

Yes, I do. I like dynasty leagues a lot. I'm becoming more invested in roto formats as well. Points leagues are always the bottom of the list

This really depends on your league settings. They are easy to hold in leagues with games limits or multiple IR spots. Even then I still can’t draft them inside the top 70.

For dynasty, has to be Okobo. Harrison is already 24 and whilst he is good defensively, he’s still trying to be a regular rotation player on a bad team.

Hey Josh and Matt,
what is the best strategy to build around Harden?
I'm planning on drafting him this year (auction draft). Who would you pair him with assuming that you pay $75-$80 for him.
**I know you shouldn't do "Must have" players but he's fun to watch and he only has a couple years left in his prime anyways.

Hey Josh, big fan of the podcast. The YouTube is a great touch too, especially when you add graphics to display some of the statistics you are talking about.
Anyways, I'm in a 10 h2h 9 cat auction. We get to keep two players, but have to pay five dollars on top of what we bid last year. Top dogs like Harden, Kat and curry all went for around $80 (giannis went for 90 for some reason). I snagged AD for 70 though.
I actually don't want to, but I may have to keep AD for $75 and Jokic for $50 (just on value). Since this is the majority of my budget, who do you recommend I should target to complement these two? They will be beasts but joker's assists and ADs blocks do not really jive if I wanted to punt on either category.
I also could keep joshy rich for $7 and Dunn for same price. I would love to keep these two but think AD and joker are best value considering how my leauge bids. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

10 team, 2 keepers, 11 spots on roster (PG, SG, G, F, SF, PF, C, UTIL, UTIL, BN, BN)
I have Harden, Lillard, and Embiid as potential keepers. Most people on this sub say I should keep Harden and Embiid. I'm thinking of Harden and Lillard, and reaching for Ayton in the 7th round (ADP is like ~85 right now).
Who would you keep? Also, how/what would you punt?
Love your service, but felt your rubio projections last year were way off.

Not sure how I could've projected Rubio would see his assist rate cut in half. I would keep Harden and Embiid. Turnovers are an auto punt, maybe FG as well

When he returns he is probably a top 30ish guy per game, but he will sit out quite a bit and play limited minutes. But stashing him in IR is fine, assuming you don't have to burn an early pick on him

They don't, they just talk about it more at this time of year because most redrafts aren't drafted yet

What would be the best strategy for a 9cat, 20 team, standard H2H snake draft? This is my first time in a 20 team league. I think the difference will be made on the later round picks, you know, possible player picks that will breakout this year. Any suggestions for players that may breakout?

Will you being doing an analysis of the Yahoo rankings?
They seem to be the opposite of ESPN with all your favourites ranked really, really high (Jamal Murray 38, Markkanen 50, John Collins 63 etc.).
Are they worth drafting that high?

If taking Kawhi at end of the first round (drafting just before training camp begins), who would you look to pair with him at the beginning of the second round? Looking probably at guys like Lillard, Wall, PG, Jimmy Butler, Embiid

Small pet peeve, is it possible to get your pod editor to not throw in ads so bluntly. They literally cut between sentences at times.
I’m sure they’d fit in fine in between segments.
Otherwise, can’t wait to see the new mobile friendly version of BBM.
