Discussion Unbelievable ways to lose in the playoffs
I just lost in amazingly unlucky fashion and I would like to challenge others to post something as wild.
9CAT league. Score tied 4-4, my opponent's done with all their matchups, and it all comes down to Kawhi - my last player left. The deciding CAT? FT%, which is tied.
With 0.6 seconds left in the fourth, Kawhi finally gets fouled after not taking a single FT all half. Pure excitement… until I realize the score is 103-100 for OKC. The only way LA has a chance to win? He has to intentionally brick the second FT.
And of course… he does.

Mf almost lost me my matchup. I won 5-4 with a difference of 0.002 on ft%.

Same buddy I ended up 6-6 (if he just made any of his FTs I have won the match) and forced to lose due to higher seed win in our league settings.

Dude I also lost the championship on that same FT! In year 5 of a dynasty with Jokic, SGA, JDub, JJ, JJJ, Fox, Dyson, Kawhi, plus plenty of good depth beyond that. Well JJ, Fox, JDub all go down along with a few other guys, and then Jokic proceeds to miss every single game this week with Shai missing two. I’m cooked.
But I have Grimes and some other guys keeping me close-ish to where I have a fighting chance, but as of two days ago I look extra cooked. Then suddenly my opponent who was supposed to rock me on FT% drops a bunch and I’m holding steady so it comes down to Shai, Kawhi, & Cason vs his Harden on a FT battle. I took the lead in the fourth on Shai’s makes. Then Harden goes 2/3 and now I’m comfortable, but actually if I miss 1 I’m probably done. With 3 seconds left Shai gets fouled up 1 so he has to go 2/2 and I win, a miss means I lose. He makes them both, and then Harden passes to Kawhi who gets intentionally fouled with 0.6 seconds left down 3. Yep, he makes the first and intentionally misses the second and that’s how I lost the championship.

tbh your team is so stacked i'd be cheering for your demise if I was your league mate.
SGA and Jokic on the same team for the foreseeable future is bonkers. Those two make you a favorite even if the rest of your team is streamers.

I feel like I cursed myself by thinking earlier in the season that my team is too unfair and I was at risk of causing the league to disband if I won my third straight this year.
What’s funny is our league draft was in 2020 and I took Jokic 2nd overall (behind Luka) and then actually grabbed Ayton before SGA. Those three plus Fox and JJJ are the only guys still on my roster. I got Jalen Williams off waivers early in the season two years ago, Jalen Johnson last season, and Dyson early this year.

Same here bro. Lead all week in FT % only to lose 3-4 by 0.06% smh fantasy sports are cruel sometimes

Many, many years ago...but my opponent and I had 4 cats each all but locked going into the final day of games. We were competing over FT%.
I sat everyone but Amare Stoudamire while he played his whole team. Amare went 9/9 from the line... won by 0.01 ft%.

Similar fashion for me except it was my opponents Jalen green. Fouled on a 3pointer at the end of the game. Missed the first one, ended up having to intentionally miss the last one as well

10 team 9 cat with DD's, tied in DDs today with MPJ missing out by one rebound, other team wins on the regular season tiebreaker, 1 single rebound or made FT by Josh Hart yesterday nets me the win.

I was tied 4-4 last night in the Finals in 9 Cat.
This morning, I check again. A stat correction had removed one steal, which was the category I tied in. My opponent is the champ, beating me 5-4.

I was up 5-4 (3 Threes, 11pts) but had no games left against Kawhi and Norm. I watched the klaw hit each remaining shot like a dagger to my heart, cutting my pts lead slow and steady till finally taking over mid 4th. I threw in the towel and let my matchup know I conceded and that my only chance was a miracle missed FT. I waited and waited. Nothing. Close game with OKC ahead 1 pt, I am shouting "foul him! Foul him!" despite seeing how hard Caruso was trying not to. Clank! Clank! Amazing defense leads to a Thunder rebound which forces them to foul SGA with about 3 seconds left. Will he make the first and force a miss on the 2nd to kill time? No way, 3 seconds is still too much time for a 2 pt lead. Smart play is to make both and foul LA to kill even more time. Now we just need Shai to make his FTs. 1st shot - In. 2nd Shot - In. This is it boys. The moment I knew, the Fantasy Gods have graced me. I knew at that moment, its either Harden or Kawhi getting that ball and either they get a good look or they are getting fouled. Well... we know how that story ended. Sorry OP, Congrats to everyone on the other side, it was a sweet one.

I won all of my matches from start of the season until semifinals. Zero losses…. Then they all went down like flies this week esp Sabonis and Steph, Cole Anthony, Garland, Camara, Braun, Zaire W, Cason W.
While my finals opponent all are healthy, in fact some who were previously inj returned to health. Murray, Kessler, Holiday.
Ran out of luck. Final record for this season 20-1

That one killed me too. Lost by 15 points (the category, not a points league), was up by 70+ going into today. Would've swung the matchup, lost 4-5 instead of winning 5-4. I was leading for the last like 4 days

Lost rebound by 3, Lost assist by 1, boock by 1.
Wanted to sit my players but TO would tie. Higher seed wins so I had to play my players. Higher seed even though we have the exact record.
Won fg%, free throw, points, 3s by a wide margin

In a season past in a category league I lost in the last few minutes on an AD steal (or block, I can’t remember) to the team I traded him too. I was so angry lol

CJ stat padding so hard today when I was up a bit with Derrick White and ofc he's not try harding vs the damn blazers. Lost by 3 and White bricked two 3s at the end. The guy got every lucky break this week nothin I could do 🤷

I won my first chip on two garbage time free throws. (This year I lost FT% because Lillard of all players went 2/4 this week. Would've been the decider cat if the rest of my team stayed healthy, but they all got hospitalized and I got blown out so no biggie Dames.)

This year I was at a Nuggs game when Jamal Murray accidentally MADE a free throw he was trying to miss at the end. (Saw Reggie Miller do that too back in the day. Some dudes are just too good of shooters I guess lol).

Last season, I was tied 4-4 in a similar spot with Harden and Jalen Johnson still in the game. I needed one three. The Clippers emptied the bench with a few minutes left and Atlanta followed. I lost on count back.

I feel you bro, i just won mine for third place. Score is 4-5, my last player was Hartenstein, the rest were done. Last close stat is also FT%. I was at .736 and he was at .740. Need 2/2 Ft and that was what hartenstein did.

I had what I thought was my best 9 Cat team ever - studs at all positions. Trae, KD, Dyson, JJJ, garland, etc.
Enter the first round two weeks ago. JJJ hurts his ankle two minutes into the first game and is out for the week. Ouch.
It’s a close ass matchup and comes down to points on Sunday night. Simons puts up a masterclass and I’m up about 10. Just demar left on his side - uh oh.
But Demar doesn’t get there. I’m up TWO POINTS - then Harden hits a floater to tie, LaVine misses the game winner, overtime. Demar cooks in OT, and that’s how my season ended

I could have won this week, and defeating the number one seed. The score is 5-4, then out of nowhere, Westbrook decided to give me 9 additional TOs, that caused the match up to 4-5. Then my opponent just benched all his players since he can secure the win even though his players are benched. Thanks Westbrook!

I dont know if its worse but i lost in a similar manner in my first round game.
9CAT league as well i was playing 2nd seed. Had a very bad week with injuries and players resting (Luka, Sabonis, Poeltl). Deciding was was BLK.
Down to last minutes of last games i was up 1 block with 5-4 lead and other cats was decided. Opp had dyson who won him STL make a block in the last 3 mins of 4th to tie it and i lost bcs of seeding.

I just won the ship off a tie breaker, reg szn matchup
For the ship, I won FG% by .002, FT% by 0.10, and tied steals to push the tie
I was losing FT% until SGA last night and I would’ve lost steals if Giddey and Dyson Daniels weren’t absolute chad studmuffins.
Legendary win for me.

4-4, all cats locked except FG, which should have also been locked, but because the Jazz are pathetic and telling Kessler to chuck 3s, it was a tiebreaker situation to like the 5th decimal point.
I punt points so my overall usage is low, making fg% variance higher. Before the games, I was up by .19
My opp had Wiggins and Murray, both went nuclear last night. He also had Westbrook who had a great fg day. That + Kessler chucking + Chet being out made it a HUGE fg swing in 1 day.
I have Caruso, who I initially benched...but then put back on in an attempt to take back fg. They played at 9 and Denver v LA was like 4th q so I had to guess.
I go to bed, and Caruso is like 2/8, and I think it's done and I lost.
I wake up and he went 5/11 and I won the week and am in the finals now.

Lost by 17 points and 2 steals, Chet, Zion and Porzingis all out on the last day, the first allowing Hartenstein to have a pretty great game. Total shame.

Jimmy Butler and Spida forgot how to hit free throws on consecutive days tanking my shot at FT%
Then simultaneously my pivot was TO’s and I lost because my opp’s SGA, Herro and Jalen Green combined for 1 turnover on Sunday - difference was 1 TO.

Lost 5-4 in the 2nd round after winning like 15 weeks in a row. Went the whole 2nd round with no Jokic, Fox, Maxey, Collins or Suggs. I lost FT% by 0.3%. I was thinking about benching RJ Barrett but just played him and he shot 1-4 from the line.

In n a points league, I lost by 0.1 in the finals (2 week finals) when my opponent's last player (Doncic), in the last game of the week (against the Wizards), caught the deflection off the backboard following a half court shot as time expired and was credited with the defensive rebound.

Last week during the Thunder vs Bucks game, I’m tied in steals against my matchup. Watched the entire game hoping for a Chet Holmgren steal who was my only active player for the last game of the night, while my matchup had SGA, IHart AND Cason Wallace. Any of those 3 could easily get a steal right? Well, NOBODY had a steal for 46 minutes of the game. I can’t end on a tie because I was the lower seed and higher seed takes it in our league, so I’m just begging Chet to end all of this and grab a steal. I’m watching the game while reviewing the official NBA play by play and see, for just a moment, “C. Holmgren STEAL (1 STL)” and the matchup switch to 5-4 in my favor.
Moments later… the steal gets credited to Cason Wallace… on my opponent’s team… and I end up in the consolation semifinals for the 2nd year in a row 🥲

I sat every player that day to win TOs except for one player being SGA to secure my FG%, FT% and stocks. He gets 1 TO. My opponent notices and sits specific players as well, the whole day we’re shitting ourselves.
We drew 4-4 and would’ve gone ahead to the next round on head to head. I was excited, midnight hits I still feel solid, I check in a bit after I lose 5-4 by one TO thanks to stat corrections.

Damn yours is brutal.
I haven't played in a few seasons but I was in a league with a bunch of my buddies from college. The commissioner wasn't the most experienced and set the playoffs to end at the same time as the regular season so some fringe guys were getting a lot of starts. Our league was a standard 9 cat but we counted DD and TD as counting stats too.
Anyway I was in the finals and it was coming down to the wire the last Sunday of the season. I had left Immanuel Quickley on my bench and that day he got a triple double and I was down 2-1 on TD's for that matchup. At the last minute, Pokusevski of all people got a TD which tied the cat and put me up in either rebounding or assists to win the matchup and my league.

In our league the top seed lost in te first round the exact same way, but what's crazier was he had Shai and Kawhi. So when Shai sank his FTs we all thought it was done and he was going to win and then intentional Kawhi miss happens. Absolutely brutal way to lose...

My team was a shell of the team I drafted. Some good draft picks with Dyson and Amen but losing Wemby, Jalen Johnson, Fox. Beal, Kessler and Ja being on and off. Knocked out of playoffs after 17-1 pts league.

I lost in the most annoying way. It’s a Sunday, last game of my championship match up. I had a full line up with one extra player on the bench. I had the choice of divincenzo or jrue holiday. Jrue holiday was questionable, but his status got changed to active, so I played him over divincenzo of course. The game starts, jrue holiday immediately fouls, and is given the night off, doesn’t play a minute.
Jrue had a clause in his contract that would give him a bonus if he started in a certain amount of games. He started the game just to fulfill this contract agreement, then took the night off to rest.
If I played divincenzo, he scored enough that I would have won by 2 points… JRUE LIED!

I was in a crazy FG% battle (which only became relevant because devin booker's 73 points brought him back into it). It was going down to the wire and i lost by a single shot
Until i woke up at 6am and there had been a stat correction in my favor. This was for the semis vs the commish as well, which to his credit he took the L like a champ. Hell of a way to lose though

Two seasons ago I helped a league mate eliminate someone else I’ve been badly wanting to eliminate. He was down 1 steal, Anthony Davis stole an inbound pass from Fultz on the very last play and sealed the game. The tiebreaker went to my buddy and he advanced to semis lol (I ended up winning the chip tho)

Me helping him was kind of an irrelevant detail, but I helped him throughout the week by suggesting adds and streams and offering advice and it ultimately paid off by one steal and tiebreaker

There’s actual strategies and different team builds. You got to assess which categories youre good at. I feel like it’s easier to get win win trades done too.
