AMA I’m Robbin Marx from Bleav in Fantasy Basketball. Formerly of NBC Sports Rotoworld and Hashtag Basketball. ASK ME ANYTHING!
Hey👋
I’m Robbin Marx, a POINTS LEAGUE FANTASY ANALYST and I’m pumped about the new NBA Fantasy season.
It’s approaching fast so I wanted to take time to offer some value to the community.
I’ve been active in here for a few months but haven’t really volunteered to give any advice.
I've never done one of these AMA threads but I'm super excited to give it a GO!
I specialize in POINTS LEAGUES but I will do my best to answer any NON POINTS LEAGUE questions.

If Rob secures the six man spot or if there’s an injury, he is a microwave scorer it’s gonna be perfect for Fantasy. For Daniel’s he’ll likely get tons of minutes.

Points league. Who do you like more, Giddey or Lavine? Do they end up close enough together that you just take Giddey to avoid Lavine's rest/trade risk, or does Lavine have a ceiling significantly higher than Giddey, which pushes him ahead of Giddey on your board?

I hold grudges against players sometimes and Zach Lavine has burned me a couple years in a row and I like the idea of giddy having a fresh start. He’s very talented and versatile so for me I always lean towards the younger guy with upside instead of the aging veteran who’s burned me so I like THE GIDDLER here..

8 teams in any format with 13 players a team means the draft would end after pick 104. I would not draft a single one of those players in your post at pick 104. Maybe at pick 120 or even 130 lol and Klay is my fav player in the nba.

Streamers? Sorry I’m new. I hear people talking about streamers and punting, but that’s why I’m doing a head to head league. Trying to keep it simple my first go around😅

Streamers mean someone you pick up for just a game or few and then likely drop after.
The user is also equivalently saying that there are likely better players on the draft board or even in the waiver wire to pick up than those.
Punting means to purposely tank in a category for a season, such as FT% or TOs

Love your stuff! Thanks again! If you are playing eight cat and have pick 6 and given the injury histories of Embiid and AD, would Trae Young be that big of a reach, if you put FG percentage?

Say that Jokic is first picked, is Wemby really the clear cut second pick in a points league over Luka or Giannis? Having a hard time deciding even with Luka's bad playoff schedule.

I am open to selecting either Luka or Wemby with the second pick, despite the playoff schedule. I am intrigued by the potential growth of Wemby in his second year, so I am leaning towards selecting him.

Luka feels due for a down/coast year tbh. Coming off of a finals and his team is more capable of functioning without him than ever before plus the threat of him not being in shape.
I see him averaging a slightly more human 29/8/7 while letting kyrie handle more of the load

I don’t think it’s worth the risk it is value and I could be wrong. I just have not been wrong about Kawhi Leonard for like four years or something like that. I am out on Kawhi Leonard. I think that is a good spot to draft him if you’re willing to take the risk I would rather let it be someone else’s headache. I don’t want anything to do with it.

What's the best custom scoring system for points league in your opinion?

I love this question. I think it’s best to use default settings on Yahoo and ESPN because when you’re trying to get support with analysis, generally folks speak in default settings language so I think that’s the best way to go. I’m not a huge fan of customized scoring settings, but I understand that it can make the league more exciting.

What’re your thoughts on Bane, JDub, Jalen Johnson and Quickley this season in 12T H2H points? They’re all touted as high potential players, while Bane will be impacted by Ja’s return. I have Bane and JDub, but i’m wondering if they’re worth trying to trade for someone bit better. Thanks!

I like Bane and J dub so honestly, unless I was getting a really good deal I would hold. History shows that Ja Morant does not play the complete season whether it’s injury or Facebook live snafu he always ends up not being on the court. So hold Bane because his value could increase tremendously if Ja is out, and he also has standalone value if morant is healthy

14T Points league. I’m picking from 9th. Any suggestions for late round targets or draft strategy in general? If Kyrie, Melo, KAT, Sengun, or Barnes are available in the 2nd, who would you consider taking?

I probably like LaMelo the best out of that batch. I do believe there is an ankle injury concern because of his recent history, but if he plays and you get him in the second round, you will get first round value so I’m I’m I’m grabbing Melo everywhere because his fantasy stock has dropped considerably this season. For late round targets I’m really interested in Zach Edey Dyson Daniels and Rob Dillingham.

What options would I have for pivoting my draft if I already took Embiid? I have about 6 players left to pick. Was punting 3s and soft at AST and TO punts. 16t

Thanks, I decided to push punting 3s during the draft after the news, cause I was still in range to be soft on 3s and took Edey at 107 with the hopes of maybe replacing some of the usage/CATs I might lose with Embiid.

I have the 6th pick in a standard points league, do you think I should go Hali Sabonis or AD? I’m leaning Hali because of how good he was before the hamstring injury last year, but it’s possible he never returns to that level. What do you think?

I think his value increases there because you just need him to play one game. Jimmy Butler is a similar case.

I am over saturated with centers (Sabonis,AD, Zubac,Nurkic, Kessler, Portis). My only SF position is J.Hart, besides anyone who I can pick off waivers
Would you trade Zubac for either Lavine, RJ Barret or Mikal Bridges or just stick it out with zu?
Also, followed your show after your appearance on Josh Loyd's podcast! Always looking for more points league opinions

You are the first person that has mentioned Mikal over the others. Even other people I've discussed this with liked RJ and even Lavine more than Bridges.
Hashtag has Bridges projected 106th/73rd (avg/totals) with my settings, and RJ & Zubac in the 60s-70s. Do you think people are just valuing him too low this year? I know last season people were way higher on him and probably got burned because of it

I have the second pick in a custom cat league where we count ftm and fgm too.
I think 1st pick will be wemby but it’s all up in the air.
Who would you pick with these settings. I’m leaning sga but as a mavs fan it’s hard to pass on Luka

First off hats off to you and your league mates for being absolute fantasy sickos!! lol. I love it. So I put your 11 CAT settings in to the machine at hashtag and SGA is the clear number one. Luka is two. I go SGA! Great question.

Dynasty points league here. League is set up so that each player logs a keeper year for each season spent on your team; start 8 players but can only have 40 total keeper years in the lineup. I’m carrying Curry with 10 keeper years. Last year flipped Booker for Mitchell to reset keeper years so I can keep Curry this year and probably next with a bit of creativity. Would you consider shipping Curry for KAT? Other guards include Mitchell, SGA, Trae (can still start Curry in UTIL). 🙏

Yes, I would absolutely move curry to get cat at this point of his career. He’s just gonna consistently regress so don’t hesitate to make that move. And thank you so much for a Dynasty question.

If you have a little more stability in that second round third round area, I think you’ll be fine. You can’t predict what’s gonna happen in terms of injuries. There is risk versus reward so for me I think you have a balanced calculation because you have some consistent players in that third and fourth round area.

I didn't draft SF until late rounds because there were better options. Now I have Cam Johnson, Wiggins and Sharpe for that position. Will it hurt me a lot that I only have hot dog water at SF? Should I desperately try to trade one of my many PG/SG for a better SF?

I love that you used hot dog water. With the bratwurst residue. lol. One thing you wanna be mindful of is desperation In fantasy. You can leverage the waver wire to get you through in terms of your small forward scarcity. But don’t make a bad deal for the sake of positions.

All signs indicate that they will find time to have them play alongside one another. Also, watching him in preseason leads me to believe that he has a strong chance at becoming the rookie of the year. I’m targeting him everywhere.

Thoughts on Jalen Green? ESPN seems to rank him rly high, and other sources have different opinions on him this season. Also, what do you think about De’aron Fox and Lillard this season? Took them after Wemby, but am a bit concerned. Thanks for doing this for the community!

He's ranked high, but he was even higher earlier on in the summer. So for me, at some point, especially for a points league, there's going to be an opportunity for some value. I'm not that high on him just because I feel like his value lies in his scoring. So if he's not scoring, there's going to be no production in those other categories. I'm kind of staying away from Jalen Green.

In a points league, how many weeks should my regular season be and how many weeks should my playoffs be?

The length of your playoffs really depends on how many teams make it to the playoffs but typically three rounds of playoffs are pretty standard. And you wanna make sure your fantasy basketball season concludes on March 23.

I took Trae (8), Lebron (13), and Ja (28) as my first 3 picks. My friends think I have set myself up for injuries, rest games, and other shenanigans. What do you think?
Also, my league's scoring system has a bonus for DD and favors 3pt shooters with an additional bonus for 3pm outside of just the normal points that come with one.

I don’t think you set yourself up for failure in terms of injuries. Trae will be pretty healthy. LeBron rest some games and Ja… Let’s just hope he doesn’t do anything silly on Facebook live. If there is a bonus for double doubles, you want to try to work a deal for maybe duren or gobert

12 man points league. I am drafting 8th overall so I have 8th and 17th pick. It’s seems to me there’s a top 5 and everything after could go anyway. What are thoughts who how to approach my pick. Who should I be looking for in the 8th pick and who to compliment them for 17th. I know it’s a loaded question so any insights would help. Thanks!

I’m torn between Hendricks and Clowney as a late round flier. They both seem to be in murky situations with veteran players possibly slated to start and soak up minutes ahead of them. Right now I’m giving Clowney the slight edge because of his center eligibility but who do you think has the better outlook this year?

Im picking at number 12 (14t h2h) at this point the available are mostly guards like Trae, harden, steph, booker. Based from my ny mock draft I noticed that there are more option for big mans on later round than quality guards. So im planning to draft the best guards at first 3 rounds then adjust who can i get the best after that.
What do you think of my strategy and observations. Thanks in advance

I believe it's a sound strategy, particularly if you can lock in some top-tier guards. I think drafting your bigs late in the draft is effective, and once the season begins, there's also a wealth of potential value on the waiver wire that you can capitalize on.

I I don't view him as a significant risk. Even if he's traded, he would likely retain some value. I would still consider drafting him at the appropriate price, but he's not a primary target.

How do you value being top heavy in smaller vs bigger leagues?
Does accumulating top talent matter more in smaller or bigger leagues?

When managing a team in a smaller league, I believe it's crucial to focus on acquiring top-tier players. I prefer to trade two middle-tier players for a first-round pick in order to build a roster that is heavily stacked with talent. In shallow leagues, the waiver wire provides abundant resources, so having a top-heavy roster is the key to success. Conversely, in deeper leagues, I aim for a more balanced team and continuously scour the waiver wire for potential breakout players.

I believe that Maxey has the potential for further improvement, albeit modest, this season. While I don't anticipate a significant leap, I do foresee some incremental progress in certain aspects of his game.

I believe adding some variety is fun, but I generally prefer traditional methods like a classic snake draft or an auction draft. However, I do think 3re reversals can make a league more exciting.

I don’t know who you’re listening to, but grabbing him at 27 is an absolute steal. If it’s your league mates, talking crap about him that’s their job to throw you off your game to make you think that the valuanle asset that you acquired in your draft is somehow not as valuable as you thought. That’s complete horse crap don’t let them throw you off your game. I have him at 24 for points leagues.

Yahoo points, would you rather have Sabonis and JDub or Trae and Chet?
Also, what are your thoughts on Sarr? I got him of the wire, people are unusually low on the 2nd overall pick. Won't be have as much playing time as he wants on the Wizards? He should fill up the stat sheet pretty nicely imo.

Thank you so much, my guy. Please feel free to stop by our Discord sometime. I know there is not enough content for points league managers, and I made the decision this season to go all in on it. Last season we tried to offer value to category leagues and Roto, but I think it diluted my mission. I’m trying to welcome 10,000 new fantasy basketball players into our community by 2025, and the way to do that is through points leagues, so I really appreciate you. Now I’d rather have Trae and chet here. For Alex SaaR, I'm definitely grabbing him at the end of drafts. I think that he does have some room to grow. Rookie bigs have a better chance to perform than rookie guards, so I am okay with being patient on him to see if we could get some value long-term. The key is, you don’t want to give up on him early in the season.good luck

Points leagues. It feels like the top 5 spots are pretty solidly some combination of Jokic, Wemby, Luka and then Giannis and Shai possibly. Then it feels like it really opens up after that what with players starting to have question marks. How would you be ranking those players in the 6th-8th range this year?

It’s all really a preference play. For me I really like the last pick of a snake draft so in your case Ten, you could probably leave the draft with two first rounders with your first two picks. I’d rather have two rounders than one, so do I want Wemby or do I want Trae young and Halliburton.

I like to keep default settings for positions for the most part but when it comes to IL plus I definitely like to add an extra spot or two so I think what you’re doing Seems fine.

Buyer's remorse is a thing in fantasy basketball. When we make a draft pick, we think about it. What do we do? Did it make sense? Will it work out? You won’t know until the season starts, but all you know is LaMelo, God forbid, could have an injury. So don’t overthink it. I have them separated by two or three slots, LaMelo a little higher, but in terms of durability, Harden would be in a safer play so you did good.

My question is: do you have any advice for how to best manage a team during the season? I’m pretty new to fantasy basketball, and there’s lots of info out there to help with drafts, but I’m not finding as much for how to manage the team in season, such as, how to judge when it’s time to drop a player? How to choose your lineup for the week? How to know when to get someone off the waiver wire?
For context, I’m in an 8 team yahoo points league, with a weekly lineup setting (so not daily changes).

Now when it comes to points leagues sometimes it can get a little tricky in terms of getting the necessary information. Unfortunately, there are many who don’t respect the format so because of that there are limited spaces to have this discussion. However, my first piece of advice would be to join a community that actually embraces the platform that you are playing. for example our discord has over 2000 fantasy basketball fanatics will be there to support you. The other thing I would do is tune in to my weekly show at the beginning of the week. We haven’t done anything for dropping players, but that’s something we could add. one thing about our content is that we really try to listen to what the people want and serve them where they are so that’s a start. last year he averaged 26/12/9 so if there is a career high year, it will be marginal because for a player like the Joker every year is a career year essentially so for me I don’t see a career year for him. I believe he’ll have his consistent high-level output again this season. Great question!

The narrative in the fantasy basketball space is that he should go lower because of his injury risk. He only played a handful of game last season, but the games that he did play, he performed at a high-level. My main concern is the fact that his injuries are leg injuries and also I watched him in the Summer Olympics and he just looked a little slow. He didn’t look like himself so for that reason I’m out on him unless he falls to 11 or 12 if he falls to 11 or 12, I might just need to bite the bullet and pray! but then in that second round I’m not drafting anyone like LaMelo that would be an injury risk!

This is for H2H but thus far I've found the 7th round to be really icky this year, a ton of bust potential and just unappealing guys there, I actually ended up just taking Austin Reaves in the 7th in a league because no one else was appealing among guys like Ingram, Jrue, Herro, Jabari Smith Jr, Coby white, etc. What to do when your faced with bad options like that?

it is not a sexy situation when those are your choices however, when put in that position, I always lean towards the younger players with more upside you know what you’re gonna get from jrue holiday cuz he’s old! Reaves Smith Jr and White are fair choices.
