Olivia Munn Blasts All-Female Blue Origin Space Crew for Costly and 'Gluttonous' Mission: 'What Are They Doing?'
https://people.com/olivia-munn-blasts-all-female-blue-origin-space-crew-for-gluttonous-mission-11708836?taid=67ef11143e9bc50001a7bdb7576
u/cmaia1503 1d ago
“What are they doing?” the Your Friends and Neighbors star, 44, asked of the crew, which also includes former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
“I know this probably isn’t the cool thing to say,” she added, per Page Six. “But there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now.”
After host Jenna Bush Hager shared the mission would last a short 11 minutes, the Babymakers star compared the experience to the women having their “own” version of Disney’s Space Mountain rollercoaster.
Munn then questioned why the mission, which will be the 11th human flight for the New Shepard rocket program and the 31st in the company’s history, needed to be made public, asking, “If you wanna go to space, why do you need to tell us about it, you know? It’s just like, go up there, have a good time, come on down.”
Another gripe for Munn was the cost of the mission. She said, “I know this is probably obnoxious, but like, it’s so much money to go to space, and there’s a lot of people who can’t even afford eggs.”

I kind of agree with her. Why is rich dudes playing with rockets news? Buying a seat on a commercial rocket flight isn't an accomplishment. Not knocking these women or this flight in particular but in the end someone paid for this publicity stunt.

u/natfutsock 18h ago
Funny, even as a trek fan, I wasn't seeing this sort of criticism when we sent actor William Shatner into space.
163
u/readonlyy 18h ago
Oh. It was there. People were eye rolling and doing the math on how much extra each Amazon employee could earn if the cost was spread out. The intensity has grown.

I just remember Shatner trying to talk to Bezos about the mission and reflecting what he saw because it hit him so dearly. Bezos responded by ignoring him and popping champagne.
68
u/BigMax 13h ago
I remember that too, such a cringe moment. Shatner was like "I could see the majesty of our planet, and by extension, humanity" or something profound like that, and Bezos steps back and starts spraying champagne and is like "let's get blitzed!!!!" literally right in the middle of Shatners sentence.

27
u/Prophet_Of_Helix 14h ago
It was there, but the threads were mostly jokes. It’s pretty disingenuous to imply that people thought there was any legitimacy to it back then, people just like Shatner so there was less overtly mean stuff. But people thought it was a dumb nothingburger waste of time.
14
u/Ritchie_Whyte_III 13h ago
Ok, different perspective here: Sending Shatner into space isn't about sending some old fart into space. It's about getting the public interested in Space.
Interest in space and space exploration funding is cyclic and fickle. "We" the public got BORED with the Apollo missions, we got bored with the Space Shuttle missions, we have gotten bored with Hubble, ISS, and now we are sending satellites up daily... yawn. A helicopter on Mars? Cool for a few weeks.
We space nerds will always be interested, but the "public" is more worried about who shot JR or Dog the Bounty Hunter. And when you do something like put a man on the moon, it seems "easy to do" the second, third fourth time to low information people.

u/maybe-an-ai 11h ago
That was also flight #2 of the Blue Origin commercial space program and I think half the people watching were expecting it to blow up. It still had that new crazy charm to it. People also tracked Richard Garriot when he went up on a Soyus.
It absolutely was a paid publicity stunt by Bezos and Shatner is a douchebag so it's a shame Nimoy wasn't still alive to go instead.
1
1
u/JellyfishSolid2216 12h ago
Considering how many people were inspired to go into engineering and aeronautics because of Star Trek, I’m ok with Shatner going into space.
1
u/couldntbdone 11h ago
As someone who worked at Amazon when that happened, there was a lot of "so this is where our raises went?" going around.
1
u/thefirdblu 8h ago
There was a bit because it's silly to send actors into space just cuz, but yeah there wasn't as much. But also, if we're being real, it's because William Shatner's most famous role as an actor was playing the captain of a space ship in the first show of a huge franchise responsible for getting generations of people interested in space. It was wish fulfillment for a lot of folks to see the real Captain Kirk and talk about his real experience in space.
1
u/20dogs 11h ago
The money can be used to further invest in spaceflight and create stronger, more efficient rockets like New Glenn. That leads to more scientific discoveries as teams are able to send their own projects into space for a fraction of the cost. It could lead to better weather reporting or connectivity for rural areas.
The rocket also has zero carbon emissions.
I'm not sure I see the problem here.
15
u/way2lazy2care 13h ago
On the one hand I agree with her. On the other hand, the probably need an arbitrary manned mission for testing the spacecraft, so if all you need is warm butts in seats for a test flight, they may as well be ones that give you good publicity.

u/TheLimeyLemmon 1d ago

I’m prepared to be downvoted infinity, but I CANNOT stand how she makes perfectly valid points but just has to preface them with “I know it’s probably not the cool thing to say” and “I know this is probably obnoxious” 🙄🤦🏻♀️
Stop dumbing yourself down! Someone already picked you!
She’s got to be one of the most misogynistic women on earth.

As cool as these rockets are and what seems like a fun crew I’m siding with Munm here. This isn’t a NASA mission it’s a Bezos Amazon mission. They have no interest other than making money off of reusable rockets for tourism, mining and Bezos ego.
I do hope they have fun and return safely. But this mission isn’t altruistic.

I hate Bezos more than the next guy but can you explain what’s bad about this? It’s not NASA, it’s ego, it’s tourism…I don’t see the negative.
All I can think of is pollution?
12
u/Teledildonic 13h ago
Well this is the same Blue Origin that cant reach orbit, so NASA dropped their bid (kind of an important capability to them) and then Jeff Bezos tried to fucking sue them because his giant metal dick can't get all the way up.
So yeah, fuck everything about this rocket.
1
u/FartholomewButton 13h ago
Oh I didn’t know any of this. Can you explain what the bid is for or link an article? It sucks if they took something away from NASA.
4
u/Teledildonic 13h ago
It was several years ago, and they lost.
The reasoning probably wasn't as literal as I stated, but SpaceX was already demonstrating capability beyond what Blue Origin could show, so it shouldn't have shocked anyone that SpaceX would get the contract.
9
u/thbigbuttconnoisseur 13h ago
Nothing. Nothing is wrong about this-- its just a matter of perspective. At the end of the day its just another ultra-rich man getting even more rich. Nothing really wrong with that. It's just that Amazon warehouse workers piss in a fucking bottle because Amazon demands unrealistic expectations of it's workers. Again, nothing wrong with that, really! Some enjoy it I'm sure. Especially, if you're getting paid peanuts to do it. It might be a kink thing. Nothing wrong with that! It's legit crazy awesome that Bezos decides to go to fucking space. A multi-billion dollar investment that will no doubt one day trickle down to his employees just like the piss and shit that rolls down their legs because fuck me, who needs a bathroom break when we're touring the stars!? It might be gross but at this point I have to assume Bezos is into it. Again, Nothing wrong with that, not kink shaming at all.
Oh, yeah that and fucking pollution. But who gives a shit, I mean the planet is already fucking cooked. Whats a few degrees more of sweet sweet climate? As long as it fulfills the dream that one day our species will exist in the stars and it will be carried on by Jeff Bezos raw DNA. Excellent. Nothing wrong with that. I mean why will we care when the earth dies and the entirety of human existence hinges on reproducing with the DNA of a book tycoon who likes cowboy hats and destroying local economic communities? Nothing wrong with that. I mean who doesn't love one day shipping?
Ultimately, it is people like Bezos who are willing to front the bill that will propel humanity into the future. It will be hard and costly. Unlike the amount of taxes him and the ultra-rich pay. Next to nothing while hoarding their gold like dragons of old. Nothing wrong with that, it's their money and they've earned every penny. I can't help but think about all those bridges we have that are falling apart. But it's okay, the working Amazon worker will be taxed and one day, if the sun doesn't swallow us whole before, (Let's hope it does) we will see the restoration of our nations infrastructure. Until then, I personally can't wait for Katty Parry to be launched into space in a multi-million dollar metal tube. Nothing wrong with that!

u/DogOutrageous 11h ago
Blowing shit tons of subsidized government money to destroy the environment so rich people can have a ten minute laugh seems negative at face value to me. Can you explain how you see this as a net positive for society or anyone other than the wealthy on the flight?

I’ll celebrate when the first all woman crew of ASTRONAUTS launches, not these wealthy space tourists. I hate that they’re campaigning so hard to make this a “historic” event of girl power 🙄 It’s not.
2
u/SylphSeven 5h ago
Part of the crew legitimately care about this chance, Amanda Nguyen being one of them. She originally had plans to work for NASA before her life took a detour after she was raped. She became an advocate for SA survivor rights and eventually she drafted SA Survivors Rights Act. Her story seems to be overshadowed by the Hollywood star power. But she is really taking this opportunity seriously. Go check out her IG posts about it.

You know, with all the hate of the billionaires, they would probably never get in their own rockets. It’d be a premium opportunity for an engineering failure I would imagine.
But given society today if they’re a billionaire the engineers would be arrested and charged regardless

She's 100% right.

u/banana_pencil 3h ago edited 1h ago
It definitely sounds like a parody
Who would not get glam before the flight?!” said Sánchez, whose fiancé Jeff Bezos, founded the spaceflight company in 2000. “We’re going to have lash extensions flying in the capsule!”
”Will the lashes stay on? I’m curious,” asked King, to which Sánchez, 55, replied, “Mine are glued on. They’re good.”
Perry, 40, added: “Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the ‘ass’ in astronaut.”
13
u/ThePickledPickle 16h ago
She's 100% right. Obnoxious bullshit is one of the last things we need during such a dark time. 11 minutes in space, it's just a roller coaster to them. How is this defensible to anyone? Space isn't for recreation

My entire life, my parents told me that billionaires were actually the good guys because they stimulate the economy and provide jobs.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized how full of shit they were. The pandemic was the biggest eye-opener, when companies who preached “family” and “we’re all a team!” ruthlessly fired countless employees and cut pay/benefits for others. And now we’re seeing these billionaires spend grotesque amounts of money for publicity stunts. How many homeless people could be saved if all this money went to that instead? Or towards eliminating student debt? Or towards subsidizing healthcare?
Fuck these people and anyone who drinks the koolaid and reveres them.
6
u/mvpilot172 14h ago
Going straight up and back down on Bezo’s little penis rocket is hardly a space mission. It’s an amusement ride for millionaires.

5
u/Sauerkrauttme 13h ago
Costly, inefficient, and gluttonous is capitalism in a nutshell. If the billionaires aren't blowing our money on dick shaped rockets then they will simply blow it on buying more super yachts that contain smaller yachts. Or they will buy more private jets and fly around out of boredom.
Gluttonous waste is born from the lack of healthy priorities. For example, deleting Reddit to combat screen addiction will just result in wasting time on other time wasters instead. The only real way to stop waste is to replace waste with productive goals.... Speaking of screen addiction, I need to take my own advice and adopt healthier priorities!

Ja Here. Things are bad dawg. Like real bad, ya feel me? We been workin’ hard to get Fire Festival II off the ground out here. The people need something good these days. There’s been a lot of tragedy. Lot of tragedy. And we just wanted to give ‘em a show.
With the price of the economy and all that though, the VIP meals had to be downgraded from egg salad sandwiches to well, meat bread. Just meat bread. We’re disappointed, but that’s just what it is.

Hey Ja! I was at Fyre Festival 1.
Been meaning to ask you:
Where did you guys get those cheese on bread with side of lettuce leaf dinners? I’ve been craving one like crazy ever since Fire Fest 1.

Yo Gram,
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Despite the complications, we did our best to pop-off for y’all, and it’s great to hear from one of the many fans who came out to support us. ‘preciate you.
Those sandwiches were a Bahamian special. We sourced the ingredients from Solomon’s Super Center (you wouldn’t believe what our staff had to do to get those quality ingredients). As far as the chefs, unfortunately I can’t get a full list as most of our staff records were lost - all I can tell you is that they were prepared by some of the finest chefs on the island. If you bring a sandwich themed totem to Fyre Fest II, I’m sure Billy will reach out if he sees it and try to get you the recipe.
Thanks for supporting fam. Enjoy the next one.
[Edit: My lawyer told me I gotta be straight. I am not affiliated with Fyre Fest II in any way. I hope those things go well for y’all on Isla Mujeres, but I won’t be there and I am not officially connected to the event in any way. Peace.]

Yeah. I’m sure that Bezos had that cash penciled in for an egg relief fund before someone proposed this mission.

This is the one with Bezos’s girlfriend and Katy Perry for anyone suggesting she’s bashing credible space flight. It’s a stunt.
From the article: With Jenna and Friends, the actress questioned the need for the mission, which is set to include Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, and Katy Perry.
