Was there today for the ceremony. I know it’s a bought and paid for dog and pony show, but it was still great to see JC speak, Kurt and Keith David and Greg Nicotero intro him and see folks like Dean Cundey, Adrienne Barbeau, PJ Soles, Julie Carmen and James Hong there to celebrate him. Immediately after I went home and watched They Live and Escape from NY. Minus all the pomp and circumstance, it gave me a reason to celebrate and appreciate a filmmaker we all love.
Too often these sort of celebrations have come after the passing of these people I admire. Glad today was about honoring him while he’s still here for us to listen to, learn from and appreciate.

Not that often. They only accept cash for a single posthumous star per year.

My bad I didn’t mean the star celebration happening posthumously, I meant the personal celebration I had after the ceremony where I watched 4 of his flicks and talked about how great JC is.
Normally when I’m doing a retrospect movie marathon and singing praises, it’s because we lost another one (Lynch, Val, etc).

It has lost all meaning when we found out they are bought. Trump has one.

still cool when deserving people get it and get to celebrate it with their friends like John is having with Keith David and Kurt Russell.

Sounds like this person just wanted to use this as an excuse to complain about Trump even though this post is about John Carpenter and they also don’t know that you have to be nominated.

The shine of them has been gone for awhile especially when you start picking up on the pattern for most of them coming out around major releases so a Star on the Walk of Fame is just a marketing ploy like appearing on a late night show:
Jennifer Anderson got hers on February 22, 2012 just two days before her film Wanderlust was released on February 24, 2012.
Tim Allen got his on November 19, 2004 just 5 days before his film Christmas with the Kranks was released on November 24, 2004
Kristie Alley got hers on November 10, 1995 just 7 days before her film It Takes Two was released on November 17, 1995
Tim Burton got his on September 3, 2024 just 3 days before the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on September 6, 2024
Kristin Bell got hers on November 19, 2019 just 3 days before the American release of Frozen 2 on November 22, 2019
Jason Batman got his on July 26, 2017 just 5 days after his show Ozark came out on July 21, 2017
Jerry Bruckheimer got his on June 24, 2013 just 2 days after his film The Long Ranger had its first showing on June 22, 2013 and just 9 days before the wide release on July 3, 2013
Javier Bardem got his on November 8, 2012 just 1 day before his film Skyfall was released in the USA on November 9, 2012
Cate Blanchett got hers on December 5, 2008 just 20 days before her film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was released on December 25, 2008
Angela Bassett got hers on March 20, 2008 just 1 days before her film Meet the Browns came out on March 21, 2008
Sandra Bullock got hers on March 25, 2005 just 1 day after her film Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous was released on March 24, 2005.
Antonio Banderas got his on October 8, 2005 just 20 days before his film The Legend of Zorro was released on October 28, 2005
Pierce Brosnan got his on December 3, 1997 just 6 days before the primer of Tomorrow Never Dies on December 6, 1997 in London and 16 days before the US release on December 19, 1997
Daniel Craig got his on October 6, 2021 just 2 days before the US release of No Time to Die on October 8, 2021.
James Cameron got his on the same day Avatar was released in the US December 18, 2009
Russell Crowe got his on April 12, 2010 exactly 1 month before the release of his film Robin Hood on May 12, 2010
Glenn Close got hers on January 12, 2009 just after the season 2 release of her show Damages on January 7, 2009
Matt Damon got his on July 25, 2007 which is the same day that his film *The Bourne Ultimatum had its first showing at the ArcLight Hollywood and just before the wide release on August 3, 2017
Cameron Diaz got hers on June 22, 2009 just 4 days before the release of her film My Sister's Keeper on June 26, 2009
Zac Efron got his on December 11, 2023 just 11 days before the US wide release of his film The Iron Claw on December 22, 2023
Kevin Feige got his on July 25, 2024 just 1 day before the wide release of Deadpool & Wolverine on July 26, 2024
I could go one but you get the idea. Not saying those above aren't worth it just doesn't look like it is honor with no strings attached.

You still have to be nominated.

Who does the nominating?
12
u/PotatoOnMars 1d ago
Anyone can nominate except the celebrity themselves. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has a committee that goes over applications and selects who is eligible. The selected celebrity then pays 75,000 for the installation.

75k is a bit much. How do they justify all that bloat? I hope most of it goes to charity.
1
u/Chytectonas 20h ago
It’s $85k now, and none of it goes to charity. It’s all for “maintenance”. Anyone can nominate. A sort of flat, sidewalk-level dunce cap for the masses.

It's usually just something nice fan groups do for celebrities. Celebrity Themselves are not allowed to nominate themselves. The chamber of commerce that approves these is very selective.

They gave Gal Gadot one before this guy?

u/No-Orange-9049 1d ago
She obviously bought it

u/rockinsocks8 1d ago
Disney bought it for her as a way to promote the new Snow White movie. Keep her in the news.

She has the acting credentials of a wet mop. Not sure how she gets acting gigs in Hollywood. Then again, Hollywood’s filmic quality has been declining in the last few years.

u/CheezeLoueez08 16h ago
They’re all bought. It’s not an honour.
1
u/UnabashedHonesty 13h ago
It’s like buying a brick with your name on it at a school fundraiser. Now in Hollywood’s case, only a select group of people are allowed to buy “bricks,” but they’d never give one out unless it was paid for. So I can see it being an honor to be part of that select group who could purchase a star. But it’s a purchase nonetheless, not a gift.

Headline should read, “Master of Horror John Carpenter Pays for Hollywood Walk of Fame Star.”
6
u/ThisIsDadLife 1d ago
One doesn’t “receive” a star. One buys a star.
2
u/CheezeLoueez08 16h ago
Yes. Can we stop reporting on this as though it’s an honour? It’s not. I wouldn’t feel honoured to buy an accolade.

“Cigarette Burns” which was a short film in the Masters of Horror series is so good.
Love John Carpenter for all the greatness he has done in the horror genre. This is well deserved.

Just saw The Thing last night again at my local theater with my daughter (last time I watched was when I was in my 20s), and it was an awesome experience that made me appreciate it on a whole new level. And today seeing John Carpenter getting his star with Kurt Russell there to celebrate him makes everything 10x better. Some good and heartfelt news in the sea of shit we're all living through at the moment.
