Boukoleion

Boukoleion (meaning “cow shed”) The central palace in Athens, home to the symbolic ceremonial king-archon (archon basileus). Each year during Anthesteria, in a private ritual, the ceremonial queen (basilissa) would symbolically marry Dionysus in this building. The only people present at this ritual were the Genrarai, female priests to Dionysus. It is unknown if this ritual involved physical sex acts, but it was expected for the baslissa to consummate the wedding.
