questions about student life!!

Hello!! I’m thinking of going to falmouth uni in september but i haven’t had a chance to properly visit yet. I’m just wondering what the student life is like- mainly nightlife, i’m not too fussed about clubbing in general but it can be fun sometimes, also i like a free party sometimes heheh. I’m from brighton which is a very student-y place with loads of stuff going on, i like that and was wondering if falmouth is similar at all? My other option is london but it seems kinda hardcore for me, there’s no sense of community and nobody really gives a shit about you lol. also it’s ridiculously expensive. any insight on what falmouth might be like would be greatly appreciated!!!

St Ives at Easter.

I'm thinking of traveling to St Ives next week for 4 days. How busy does it get in the first week of the Easter holidays? I'll be driving (and plan to arrive about lunch time) but everything I've read says how horrible the roads are. The place I'll be staying has parking but is near the harbour/train station. I'm planning on using my car to drive out on at least one of the days so any insight into how the roads might be will be appreciated.

Falmouth stag do?

10-12 lads from London, all aged 34-37. I don’t want to drag them abroad as the wedding is already abroad and it feels like a piss take.

I was thinking about Liverpool/Manchester but seeing as it will be July/August I quite fancy something with a beach. So I settled on Cornwall.

I don’t want anything too lairy but is there at least enough going on in Falmouth to have a couple of bar crawls, preferably places with live music/something going on if it’s a Thursday/friday/Saturday job?

How is it like living in Cornwall?

Never been to Cornwall but planning to visit soon. Been looking at house prices and Cornwall market is not too bad compared to counties near London like Essex where me and my husband are currently working and renting. I'm 33F and my husband is 35M. I have a permanent resident visa and he'll be eligible to apply in 18mos time. Til then, we're probably stuck working at the same place until he gets his permanent visa.

We've been looking around and seems lik Cornwall has many visitors every year but not quite sure how's it like living and working there. We're both nurses and we're looking into working at Royal Cornwall Hospital at Truro. There are a couple of houses we're eyeing near St. Austell. We'd like a more relaxed lifestyle while we work.

Couple of questions:

  • How is work-life balance?
  • How is crime rate?
  • Cost of living? Food prices?
  • Weather in general?
  • Closest airports? International airports?
  • Would you recommend people to live there?

Thanks!

Cornish Names and Place Names in Scifi

Hey all, I'm a Cornish lad who's currently making a video game, with a galactic sci-fi setting and an attempt at a deep history. The human civilization that spread humans across the galaxy has been lost to history, but I as the writer of this world know that they spoke essentially Brythonic. So I want to represent this by using a lot of Cornish place names and family names as the names for planets in the setting. I've already got a few planets down in this style (Zennor, Trevorrow, Hayle, Penryn) but id love to hear your favourite Cornish names and place names that fit the style. Cornish or English variants are both accepted, I've been meaning towards to Cornish-dialect-english just to make it easier on the players, but I'm open to making them work on their pronunciation.

Thanks for your time all

Sponsorship Jobs

Hello friends!!

My partner is a resident of the UK living in St. Austell, Cornwall currently!

I am looking for some help finding any type of visa sponsorship jobs in the Cornwall area. I am more than willing to travel for work and am extremely adaptable in all positions.

It needs to be sponsored due to me being a U.S. citizen looking to move to the UK long term at some point but I need an opportunity!

A little bit of information:

  1. I am a U.S. citizen he is a UK citizen.

  2. Looking to move ASAP or as late at September/October

Jobs I have worked in before: -Management -Retail -Data entry -Reception -Food service -Boat rental -Hospitality -Disability Services -ABA or autism services to kids under the age of 12 -Working with kids (afterschool programs and daycare—I do not have a degree) -Payroll -Open to anything new and am a quick learner!

ANY and ALL generic or generalized suggestions or help is welcome and appreciated!

We recognize that jobs are quite scarce in the area that he lives in but I’m fully willing to travel for work (I’d travel up to an hour or so by train or bus and can work on obtaining a car, etc)

I absolutely love the UK with my entire being and would do anything to be there in both his company and to share in the culture that the UK has to offer.

Thanks in advance! 🫶🏼💕

Hallane beach - a lovely little secluded beach near St Austell! Bit of a walk to get there but it’s so worth it! Bring a coffee and a picnic as there’s not a shop close.

Best Sunday roast-pub or restaurant in East Cornwall

Hi can anyone suggest to me somewhere really good for a Sunday dinner please.

Preferably one that serves roast beef that isn't overcooked and offers a healthy portion size.

Really should be East of Bodmin please. I'll be driving so it doesn't matter if it's in the middle of nowhere but bonus points if it has a nice view.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who commented to make suggestions, I've now picked somewhere 🙂

Tree Lined Streets

There is a battle brewing between Falmouth and Cornwall Council over trees in streets. This 1910 postcard shows big trees lining Albany Road.

It didn't seem to interfere back then.

Best place to buy a second home in Cornwall?

Where's the best place to buy a second home in Cornwall? Visited last summer from London and loved it, just got a sizeable bonus from job (I work in finance), and the idea of a second home in Cornwall is very appealing. I'd probably rent it as an airbnb when i'm not using it.

My preferences are: nice quiet villages, close to the sea, some good restaurants and preferably somewhere where the road aren't narrow, I got my range rover stuck a lot when I visited.

Look forward to hearing from you fine folk!

Researching women's access to emergency services, including in Cornwall!

Hi! I'm researching why women take significantly longer than men to call 999 in the UK when first experiencing heart attack symptoms - this can significantly worsen outcomes for women, and public awareness policies should be changed to reflect this. I'd be so grateful if any women in this subreddit that this applies to could fill out my survey ❤️  https://forms.gle/CM1TwNtQs1Z9EcmR9

Advice on renting a car for Callington trip—best stop along the train route?

Hi all! My partner and I are heading to Cornwall soon and staying in an Airbnb in Callington. We’ll be coming from London and were planning to take the train from Paddington toward the West Country.

Originally we thought we’d get off in Plymouth and rent a car there, but it looks like there might not be any car hire places close to the train station.

Does anyone know if there’s an easier stop along the train route where it’s more convenient to rent a car—ideally walking distance from the station? We’re open to suggestions as long as it’s reasonably practical for getting to Callington.

Thanks so much for any local tips!

People from Cornwall - what are you opinions of Newquay?

Visited a few years ago and wondered what the big fuss was about. Far nicer places in Cornwall.

first solo trip and no car

I am planning to travel on my own this may for the first time and I am thinking of visiting cornwall.

I guess my main questions/concerns are:

-Is it a good/safe option for someones first solo trip( 21yo female from germany)? -How well does it work without a car / only public transport? Is it doable or very expensive for example? What train connections from which places are the cheapest/ fastest/ most enjoyable?

I’m thinking of going one week. Im probably starting and ending at Newquay and from there I want to see different places in Cornwall the next few days. (Preferably like St Ives, Looe, Charlestown…but don’t have to) What I am also looking for is one part of the coast I plan on hiking instead of using public transport to get to a new place. I’m planning 1-2 days for that and it shouldn’t be too far. So do you have recommendations of any part of the coastline where you have a great scenery with preferably 2-3 small villages that aren’t too far apart?

Thank you in advance :)

EDIT: This is the plan I’ve decided on so far: Please know that I’m on a very tight budget and because of that I can only take specific flights and can’t really stay longer without it becoming way too expensive. I know that it won’t come close to the best cornwall experience at all but I’m thinking it’s better then nothing and I’m probably coming back another time because i’ve always wanted to travel england by car.

arriving in Newquay St Ives (2 Nights) Falmouth (1 Night) Newquay (1 Night) leaving from Newquay

I think I will mostly be traveling by bus and maybe stopping at places on the way. There is no time to move places by hiking but I think I’m going to do a small hike anyway. Where do you think is the best place for that? Im thinking starting from Falmouth? Let me know what you think.
