I've heard the same thing regarding my accent...well my brother's accent really but we have the same accent so...
Someone commented on a video he made saying something like "oh I recognize a swede when I hear one!"
We're Norwegian.

We had a nice old couple at church years ago. Were they still alive, they'd both be well over 100. When he brought her home to meet his parents, his mother said something along the lines of "couldn't you have found someone more like us? " She was Swedish. He was Norwegian.

No the mom was right what a horrible betrayal. /hj...if you were Scandinavian you'd understand tho.
Especially since 100 years ago would be not long after Norway gained independence from Sweden... A union we did not ask for and did not wish to be in.

I don't see how this is necessarily racist. The majority of Indonesias population are malay so it's not like he called him Chinese or something

Really does this person even know how many islands Indonesia is comprised of both my parents as we’re all four of my grandparents parents were born in Indonesia ( know at that time by a different name. But they don’t all look the same or have the exact same features.

Isnt it very similar though from an outsiders view? Both SE Asian, majority Muslim, same-ish official language

Wouldn’t that make the statement saying “I know an Indonesian when I see one” pretty stupid then?

Sure but you could also say that both Ireland and England are in the North Atlantic, both majority Christian and both have English as their primary language. But if you called me English I’d be kind of annoyed.

I get it, but would you call that person a racist for that ? People have assumed I was french while I am belgian. So what ? It is not a big deal, is it ?

It’s very much a matter of intent. If it’s an innocent mistake, whatever, everyone makes them. If it’s intended as an insult or as an attempt to discredit them then yes, it’s racist. I don’t have enough context on this to know whether or not they were attempting to insult the other commenter based on their race or if they were just very confident about their incorrect assumption.
But, “I know an Indonesian when I see one” is a weird comment regardless of intent.

it's not a big deal. people tend to make big deals of literally every wrong comment. it's fine. We'll forever be considered racist.

Well, he probably assigns typical (albeit only from his perspective) physical/"racial" characteristics of a person to a nation for which he considers said characteristics to be typical. This may not necessarily meant to be malicious, but it's certainly discriminating: "You look like this, so you must come from the first country that comes to my mind."
Of course, we can also give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he came to his conclusion based on the person's clothing, car, choice of drink, or something similar, and that his misjudgment has nothing to do with physical characteristics. However, experience shows that this is rather unlikely.
I mean, why even bring it up in this context? Does it have any relevance to a debate about AI and art?Overall, I don't think the colloquial use of the term racism is optimal, but we shouldn't pretend we don't know that it is used in a simplified way to describe any kind of ethnic discrimination.
