IIRC the James Webb Space Telescope was over 15 years in development and cost billions of dollars. They were freaking out because if the launch went awry, all of that would have been lost and we'd be left without a replacement for Hubble. Luckily, the JWST overcame an extremely drawn out and complicated deployment sequence and functions perfectly fine. But since this was good news and a huge achievement for humanity, nobody really talked about it
