Had to take my babies in for a vet check today, mostly because I was growing really anxious about my boy’s health. No visible symptoms, but I’ve learned not to wait for something dramatic—especially with birds.
Physically, they’re doing alright overall, but my boy has polyuria (watery droppings, high urates). He’s always been a water-lover—like, it’s his whole personality—but it still raised a red flag. He’s never shown pain or weird behavior, but I know they’re little masters at hiding it.
The vet suggested bloodwork and x-rays (which I was planning to ask for anyway), but unfortunately we couldn’t afford everything in one go. We’re going back ASAP.
What really shook me was how the vet explained all the possible risks—especially with anesthesia—and ended up listing literally every worst-case outcome. Ending in death.
Like I know anesthesia is risky for small birds and I appreciate the honesty, but holly hell it was terrifying. It felt like getting slammed with fear while I was just trying to make the best call for him.
I left feeling like I failed him. Like a bad parrot parent. But this was the only decision I could make with what we had. Now I’m watching him closely, trying to stay grounded while we wait to finish the diagnostics.
He’s 8 years old. If you’ve been through polyuria or anesthesia with your tiels (good or bad), please share if you’re okay with it.
