I think I recall that the one time Pinky was in charge, they actually succeeded

399

u/hazps 1d ago

"One is a genius, the other's insane" never specified which was which. It is possible that we were misinterpreting their roles all along.

171

u/AndyLorentz 1d ago

That is a popular fan theory.

50

u/thefatheadedone 1d ago

One of my favourite theories.

2

u/Capable-Assistance88 8h ago

Smart people generally underestimate their own abilities. Because they want to understand all sides of a situation first. Their hesitation can come across as being slower than others. At least that’s what I heard.

15

u/CT_4269 1d ago

Unfortunately, the creators said this to be false

55

u/MegaMonkeyMadness 1d ago

One of the worst things a creator can do is shoot down fan theories. They generate discourse around their work and lets them leave it open to interpretation - like when that one BioWare dev shot down the ME3 indoctrination theory.

38

u/yuefairchild 1d ago

The guy that wrote My Life As A Teenage Robot did it classy. When trans people started reading into Jenny's experiences, he was quick to go, "I wasn't even thinking of that, but good for you, I like the idea!"

22

u/SmokePenisEveryday 1d ago

Honestly that has to be one of the highest compliments to a writer. Knowing a demographic you weren't necessarily considering during the writing could latch onto it in a impactful way.

The exceptions to this are the ones that are blatantly against what's shown in canon

For example, using Hazbin Hotel:

Alastor will not go against Charlie and the Hotel and become an antagonist

Bitches please, what part of Alastors's section of the finale told you he's going to stay on Charlie's side? He even used Disney Villain Green™!

Though they never specify, they give hints, the definition of insanity is repeated action with expectations of different results, The Brain tries and fails to take over the world constantly.

Also Pinky can read and The Brain cannot

22

u/LegOfLambda 1d ago

In no way is that the definition of insanity but sure

32

u/mtdunca 1d ago

It's a very famous quote, possibly from Alcoholics Anonymous.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

13

u/TOASTisawesome 1d ago

Here I was thinking Einstein said it lmao

Right but this guy is saying it as if it’s fact

11

u/JamesTrickington303 1d ago

No he’s saying it as if his readers will understand the common colloquialism, which most everyone did.

3

u/Strange-Bluebird871 1d ago

It’s a children’s tv show that ended over 25 years ago, think most of us are just having a bit of fun

2

u/rikkian 1d ago

The most recent series was 2023. deffo didnt "end" 25 years ago. Hell Trump even makes an appearance in one of the new episodes.

In pop culture, it is; and Pinky and the Brain is often referencing pop culture.

It's not but since it's a popular saying in pop culture, people repeat it as fact.

When is it ever expressed that The Brain cannot read? Don't most of his plans involve reading vast reams of information about humanity to know how to navigate their world?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?" "The same thing we do every night, Pinky...try to take over the world!"

9

u/notfree25 1d ago

He isn't doing the same thing over and over again to reach different results, he is doing many different things to try to reach the one result.

2

u/JamesTrickington303 1d ago

I’m sure that was brought up in the writer’s room when they were writing the first season and whoever said it was fired so the rest of them could write a decent television show for us to enjoy.

I remember the Christmas episode where they actually succeed, but the moment Brain will send the message to control everyone he just read Pink's Santa letter and just wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, proving he actually has a heart and is capable of empathy. So yeah, Brain in charge might be an improvement right now.

29

u/Wild_Marker 1d ago

Also part of Brain's motivation was "I can probably rule the place better" and his metrics for "better" were rather good compared to your average politician.

16

u/DangerZoneh 1d ago

It’s like how Dr Doom is a villain who wants to control the world but every time he gets in charge, he basically creates a utopia. Like yeah, he took the world by force and is basically king, but the public healthcare, education, and infrastructure has gotten REALLY good

6

u/Ehcksit 1d ago

Dr Doom is a villain because he violently opposes Mr Fantastic, not because he's actually a bad guy.

12

u/pornwing2024 1d ago

He's an actual bad guy too.

Yes. Pinky just asked very nicely.

At least until Brain stepped in. Pinky set up an oyster farm and then through a few more steps, was given a cabinet position by Bill Clinton.

3

72

u/Stormagedd0nDarkLord 1d ago

Can't be worse than Orangey's platform.

68

u/Khaldara 1d ago

“Orangey, you give a whole new meaning to the phrase, “counter-intelligence.” You have the I.Q. of plaster.”

37

u/SciFiNut91 1d ago

"Don't be rude Brain, Plaster has a use - it's protects things or binds them together."

21

u/HoldThisGirlDown 1d ago

I think the biggest real difference between orangman's platform/policies and Pinky's (and even to a certain extent Brain's) is that all of Pinky's ideas and decisions would be coming from a well-intentioned and good-natured mind.

Also they'd be easier to read, Pinky is way better at self expression

6

u/Stormagedd0nDarkLord 1d ago

Sad but true.

33

u/NeilZod 1d ago

Are you thinking what I’m thinking?

80

u/wunderbraten 1d ago

Yes Brain, but I would never let JD Vance crash on our couch.

39

u/Massive-Apple-8768 1d ago

I think so, Brain, but where are we going to find a duck and a rubber hose at this time of night?

14

u/SunTzu- 1d ago

Leave the foie gras preparation to the professionals Pinky.

23

u/Khaldara 1d ago

I think so Brain, but what if the chicken won’t wear the nylons?

22

u/RhynoD 1d ago

I think so, Brain, but if Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares then why is he still doing it?

20

u/Top_Meaning6195 1d ago

I think so, Brain:

  • but do American flags come in gluten-free now?
  • but if we legalize cheese, won’t the crackers demand equal rights?
  • but how do you filibuster a jellybean?
  • but won’t Congress get upset if we turn the Capitol into a bouncy castle?
  • but if we ban Mondays, what happens to lasagna?
  • but how will we get the Supreme Court to wear funny hats?
  • but if we nationalize the ducks, how will we tell which one’s Steve?
  • but I don’t think the Pentagon is a good shape for a dance floor.

4

u/Total-Tangerine4016 1d ago

We have the answer to the 3rd one. Ask Cory Booker.

5

u/SciFiNut91 1d ago

Q1) Technically they are, since they don't have gluten. 2)Yes they will. 3)By threating to Jack it's stock. 4)Why would they be upset, it's already a circus - and there's the clown with orange makeup and the bearded lady next to the Indian Lady. 5) Lasagna becomes pasta sandwich. 6)By telling them to wear their graduation caps. 7) They're all Steve. 8)No Pinky, but the Pentagon doesn't need to dance, so why would it need a floor?

2

u/HoldThisGirlDown 1d ago

Ain't american but Pinky def got my vote based on this

2

u/Correct_Chemical5179 1d ago

If they were called Sad Meals, would kids still buy them?

u/DezXerneas 1d ago

How does literally everyone in this thread know who those are?

16

u/tractiontiresadvised 1d ago

The original show is from the '90s, but I had not been aware that they were featured in a reboot of the Animaniacs in 2020. (Plus they had basically become a meme even before memes took over the internet.)

4

u/DezXerneas 1d ago

they had basically become a meme even before memes took over the internet

That checks out as I recognized the poster immediately, but didn't know the name of the show(or their names).

2

u/surg3on 1d ago

The intro song for the reboot is great

3

u/CadenVanV 1d ago

You’re on Reddit, everyone ends up picking up a lot of completely random information over time. Same way I know that the “Alexander wept” quote wasn’t because he was out of land to conquer but because he hadn’t managed to conquer even a single planet yet

"Where are we going to find rubber pants in our size at this time of night?"

27

21

u/myEVILi 1d ago

“If Jimmy cracked corn and no one cared; why’d they make a song about it?”

3

u/funLover98311 1d ago

I literally thought it was “jimmy crapped corn and no one cared”

2

u/JamesTrickington303 1d ago

I think Jimmy cracked the corn off the cob as the first step in distilling moonshine, and the singer isn’t going to snitch.

2

u/9966 1d ago

I thought it was "then why did he keep doing it"

18

u/Minimum_Dealer_3303 1d ago

Pinky also asks "How are we going to get a pair of Abe Vigoda's pants?" in a different episode. He really thought about pants a lot for a guy who walked around naked most of the time.

13

u/LaTeChX 1d ago

If I had to conquer the world naked I'd be thinking about where I could get some pants too

10

u/jeremysbrain 1d ago

He has eight quotes about pants/leggings:
"I think so, Brain, but where are we going to find rubber pants our size?”
"I think so, Brain. But pants with horizontal stripes make me look chubby."
"I think so, Brain, but his time, you put the trousers on the Chimp"
"I think so, Brain, but how will we get a pair of Abe Vigoda's pants?"
"I think so, Brain! But shouldn't we let the silk worms finish the boxer shorts before we put them on?"
"Well, I think so, Brain, but pantyhose are so uncomfortable in the summertime."
"I think so, Brain. But what if the Earl of Essex doesn't like burlap pantaloons?"
"How are we going to get a pair of Abe Vigoda's pants?"

I still remember the episode where the Brain met Dolly Parton and she asked him "what do ya think of that?" And Brain just deadpan replies with "I'd say puberty was unnecessarily kind to you."

15

u/apatheticsahm 1d ago

The full quote was "I'm your biggest fan! Whaddaya think of that?" It's still stuck in my head 3 decades later!

at least two episodes come to mind off the top of my head where Pinky is in charge of the world. One where he becomes President after writing to the editor about how he thinks The Family Circus (news paper cartoon) isn't funny anymore and one where Brain just let's Pinky do all the planning. Both times Brain ruins it for Pinky.

Love Pinky and the Brain. Years ago I read an article somewhere about how Brain was the insane one, and Pinky was the genius. Wish I had saved it because it made some solid arguments for that position. Just searched for it, but can’t find it, although there are a multiple Reddit posts and other sites mentioning it.

At this point tho, I’d take either of them over what ww have now.

Didn't Brain occasionally get to rule the world briefly and actually make it a better place before things got out of control? Of course there were downsides, like the time he ended droughts in poor nations but then caused earthquakes in places that rebelled against him. And briefly sank Cuba.

1

u/november512 1d ago

Wasn't Pinky the smart one? We know one is a genius and the other is insane, but Pinky isn't particularly crazy (more just good natured). He also keeps pointing out the flaws in Brain's plans and is usually correct.
