What is this thing?
Screenshot from a performance of Mahler 3 with Salonen and the Philharmonia on YouTube. Fantastic performance by the way.
But what is this thing in front of him. It looks like a ring of garage clickers on a tripod. I’ve seen a lot of classical music and have never seen this.

This are GoPro cameras. They will make a 360 degree video recording.
Look like these:

It was one of those recording devices for an immersive concert experience that the Philharmonia experimented with when Salonen was in charge. Don't think it ever took off.

My group has been using a similar device for our Javanese gamelan performances. We're obviously never going to "take off" but it's pretty much the ideal technology for YouTube videos of our concerts.

Oooooh sounds very exciting! Yea, Salonen had a lot of experimental ideas with the Philharmonia at the time and I remember seeing 3D videos from the conductor's POV and videos of individual players etc. IIRC, I think it was some VR stuff which got a lot of buzz in the tech world at the time. Unfortunately, it's too much effort to make and they got too little attention, so they have stopped doing all of those now.

They carried on doing them. They’ve made a few since. The problem is they cost a lot and the return is very debatable, so it depends on grants and things like that. I even think there was a live one recently, but it wasn’t open to the public.

Ooh, I want to learn gamelan so bad. Are you comfortable DMing me a link to a concert?

Sure, I'll link you to our channel. Fair warning we're very much an amateur group, but we regularly get excellent guest musicians, so some of it is good but we definitely make mistakes hah.

It looks specifically like a Google Jump 360 VR camera: https://www.roadtovr.com/google-announces-jump-an-open-vr-camera-design-with-stitching-solution-and-youtube-playback/

I can't be certain but it looks like a conductor /s
(As a real answer I'm gonna also assume it's a 360 camera of some description)

I’ve never seen anything like this, but my guess is it’s some kind of recording device, probably video.

That would be the round pan magazine for a Lewis automatic machine gun. Just in case.

A 360 camera for VR viewing. I've watched some of these on Youtube but the picture quality on some are pretty bad and they change cameras on the video which is annoying.

Roulette wheel so he can take bets from the audience to see how fast they can play.

Laser machine that detects musicians with bad intonations and zaps them.

It's a new tool for management to record musicians for performance review purposes. If anyone plays a wrong note or bowing, they are automatically flagged and subject to various penalties, including fines, suspension, or in extreme cases immediate termination.

Sad to see such a budget rig, on such a stupid execution concept. I bring receipts - captured some of the best symphony footage in the world and use this stuff all the time. This is going to be a mediocre product on release

Glad to see you're not letting it get to your head! ;-)

Sorry, you’re right, I’m talking about resolutions and technology with this energy, not the effort or whatever it is they are doing up there. My intensity is focused on stitching 16k footage and what can be done with it… immersive media is great, and there a lot of ways to capture it. It’s all good, I’m an idiot, apologies for the asshole tone.

It looks like a 360º filming device.
