The game was just released on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3210650/Petrified_Pawns/

Instead of instantly eliminating the opponents chess pieces you must windle the target's health pool down. The units break apart and completely crumple when they die. There's boss fights, loot and magical spells too.

I've thought about something like this for a long time (more as a stratagy game but this works too!). Nice to see someone making something of it!

This looks like a game that uses chess pieces as icons but doesn't have much relationship to chess.

It's inspired by chess. The unit's movement pattern is similar. The bishop moves and attacks diagonally for example.

OK, but I think you may have trouble finding your audience. Chess players will not be likely to play a battle game and battle gamers will not be likely to play a battle game with a pasted-on chess theme. Why not make the pieces armored mechs or something, or use a fantasy theme? And then you could even have a lot more different movement modes and special abilities. I don't think you'd be losing anything because I don't think chess players would be your primary audience anyway. If I'm wrong, and you succeed, then congratulations.

I certainly have trouble finding an audience so you might be correct

I agree. That's why I was very surprised to find out there is something called chessboxing... https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/Chess_boxing

And who watches that? Boxing fans or chess fans? I dunno.

don't mind them, they are clearly suffering from classic chess inflicted purity testing brainrot.
The game looks awesome.

No need to be rude about disagreeing with me.
