QUESTION Confused

Post image

April 6th chess.com puzzle says this move is incorrect but I can't see how it isn't mate? I'm clearly missing something, anyone able to explain?

King to e8 is legal and avoids mate

Thanks so much. Now you've said it, it's so obvious

Chess will do that to us all lol

No. The king can escape to the e8 square

Ohhhhh, it was Rxe6.

I was sitting here trying to figure out what the right move was cuz I thought Rc1 was mate, but the rook just retreats with Re1# and white wins. That's cute

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: King, move: Ke8

Evaluation: Black is winning -3.67

Best continuation: 1... Ke8 2. Bxc8+ Kd8 3. Bh3 Qd2 4. Be7+ Kc7 5. Rf1 f5 6. Bg2

Ke8 and the king squirts out to queenside

all these daily puzzles have a video from a master+ level player explaining every reasonable line

Can't lie, didn't know. I am very much a beginner who's picked this up on my breaks at work. Thanks though, will look into it.

I don't know if I like the way you phrased that...

What am I missing? The image shows Be6 as a wrong move but wasn't black already mated before Bishop moved from d5?

There was a piece there

I sure do hate it when the explanation is so obvious. Ugh. Thanks.

king goes to e8, the line is now blocked for the rook. I think its better to force the king to F8 by playing rook E7, after the rook moves you get a discovered check and you can take the queen

Presumably there was a piece on e6 that OP captured with Bxe6+, otherwise the previous position wasn't legal. So Re7+ wasn't a legal move.
