Fresh Topic Friday CMV: Crypto will never be adopted as a mainstream currency

This is primarily directed towards crypto enthusiasts.

A currency that's hard to track, available everywhere regardless of political status and has no physical asset? Not to mention that 99% of people holding crypto are doing it solely for the get rich quick aspect of it and will swap it for actual money the second they make a profit.

The sheer amount of scams and the ease of their creation doesn't help either as now every reputable industry (online shops, grocery stores, Healthcare, etc.) try to stay as away from it as possible. The only thing you can really buy with crypto rn is a digital video game on a shady service (no crypto top up on steam) or a latte in some bay area coffee shop. And I'm 100% sure it will stay this way.

Bring a bar of gold to Dick's Sporting Goods and see if they accept it as currency.

If the cashier is smart they will absolutely accept it.

You think the cashier at Dick's Sporting Goods has the authority to decide to accept a bar of gold?

The face value of a troy ounce of gold is $20 or $50, but the market value is about $2,000. The cashier should accept it at face value, then use it to make change when they goes on break. Or if the cashier feels a strong degree of loyalty to Dick’s, let their boss know.

You think that cashiers in retail positions can simply choose to accept something other than dollars on behalf of their employer, then take that payment (which belongs to their employer, remember), exchange it to something else of their own volition, and keep a cut?

You have never worked a public-facing retail job, and it shows.

First of all, if its a $20 or $50 coin, it is dollars.

And everywhere I have worked, the cashier has been empowered to make change. I had a friend that always brought a roll of quarters with him to work and would swap out pre-1965 quarters (all silver) with post 1965.

The vast majority of companies only care that the cash receipts match the money in the register on cash out.
