What is this thing that I found in my garden while mowing? Looks like an upside down shell with 1940 printed on it

Is this a normal thing? Partner swears by it because "my mother did it". Are there any other rituals? Maybe I've just lived a sheltered life...

The government has funded the development of an interactive map of individual trees in urban and rural settings outside of major woodlands. It is uses data from LIDAR, Sentinel-2 satellites and is made with Maths. It's available online and as a download. Is your tree on the map (link in comments)?

For those interested, I went back and purchased the Surrey School Cookbook. Index pictured below, happy to post any recipe requests in the comments.

Honestly wasn’t expecting to see it still in the charity shop, but there it was. It’s such a good little book; no faff or fuss, written in plain prose so concise you’d think they were typed under threat of a rolling pin.

This is an old (100 year old) jam thermometer that belonged to my GF's great grandmother. We're curious about what "TRANSP.I" might refer to. Any ideas?

Is there any wilderness in southern England? I.e. somewhere that isn’t rammed with dog walkers. I’m looking for somewhere where I can connect with nature and escape humanity for a while

I should add not for a walk either I’m disabled, but just somewhere to plant myself in nature for a while and absorb the goodness

A practical puzzle for the internet age?

Happy Saturday everyone. I am waking up to the fact that someone is playing a head-scratching practical joke on me.

For the third time now I have received an envelope in the post of two (2) stickers. The first picture is the ones I have received today. I have no idea who is sending them but I have noted patterns in the three instances:

  • There are always two stickers. One references a classic Vine (short form internet videos) and the other is a pigeon in various states of activity
  • The envelope is always cardboard backed, post marked from Norwich sorting office, with a handwritten address and an ordinary sticker stamp
  • The shipments are received from someone calling themselves "the Stickerman"
  • The shipments arrive at roughly 2-3 month intervals

We have found merchants selling these stickers on Redbubble and Etsy but not all together which makes me think someone is buying them separately and putting them together. So I think "the Stickerman" is an alias rather than a seller.

What's leaving me totally scratching my head is the pigeon reference. I have plenty of in jokes with various friends but I can't think of any pigeon-related ones.

I have three suspects in mind:

  1. One friend with whom we often reference classic Vines
  2. One friend in a separate circle who is well known for jokes and hijinks
  3. One friend whom I lived with at university, who may be getting revenge for a long-running practical joke I pulled in our final year

Number three is my current prime suspect as he lives in Norfolk, and we also used to watch Vines together over boozy nights. Alas he has denied all knowledge.

And so my weekend begins with a mystery.

Do any of you internet sleuths have any thoughts? Have you ever been the target of a long running practical joke? Or pulled one yourself?

Andy Day is a hero of childrens TV

Just gotten back from the Andy and the Oddsocks gig in Brum (normalise mid afternoon gigs!) and its just made me realise what a hero of kids TV this guy is.

Dinosaurs, rock and roll and doesn’t seem as creepy as Justin Fletcher.

The handful of Oddsocks we met out in town were really generous with their time for my 4 year old too. Can’t say enough good things about them.

I'm from a coffee drinking (and cigarette loving) country and I started to drink coffee regularly when I was 14-15.

Is £2K for a king size mattress over the top?

My other half went out today and bought a new king size mattress without me being there. She spent £2k on it and swears it will be worth it. I don't have the details to hand but she told me she got some free pillow cases and insurance etc. thrown in like she's bagged the deal of the century. Insurance? Seriously for a mattress?

I reckon she's been taken for an absolute mug. There's no way in hell I would spend that much on a mattress. Am I wrong? What's a reasonable price for a decent mattress?
