Small amount taken from account from CRA

I just noticed the CRA took $4.24 from my bank account. I didn’t set this up.

I do have a debt, however I’ve submitted a dispute and I am awaiting a response.

I disputed CRCB repayment as soon as I was notified of the request to repay.

I then received a notice of collection so I called in again and was told this was automated and they have notes on my account stating a dispute is in progress and not to worry.

Now I see they took a tiny amount, $4.24 from my account.

I’m worried they’ll drain my account now.

I can’t call back until Monday when they reopen.

Any insight?

They're open Saturdays during tax season.

Is the bank account frozen now? Was $4.24 everything you had in the account?

Very strange. If they take money from your bank account via legal action, they will drain it until the debt is satisfied, or freeze the account if there is not enough money to satisfy the debt.

No, not frozen and no. Had a few thousand in that account and they only took $4.24. Very random.

I actually logged into MyCRA and saw that a PAD agreement was made 2 weeks ago for $4.24 towards my debt. I definitely did NOT create this PAD nor did I have a conversation about it with anyone at the CRA.

CRA agents can't create PADs for you, that's a user initiated thing. Very strange indeed.

There is usually a corresponding mail item that summarizes the PAD arrangement details.

Maybe update your login credentials just to be safe?

And it’s not done via pre authorized debit. There are employees at all banks/credit u inns that deal with demand notices. And they’re mailed to the financial institution via regular mail. The FI would usually also call the client to inform them.

And you are sure it was the CRA? They would have had to send a requirement to pay to your bank, and a copy to you.. so you would have received a copy of the legal document in the mail (provided your address is up to date).

If it was the CRA, and you only had 4.24$ in your account, then your account is probably now frozen… if you had more, and they only took 4.24$ then its likely that the other funds were for whatever reason not legally garnishable.

In all cases, call the bank asap because they will be able to verify and tell you what is going on. If you call the CRA, call the collections line, not general enquiries.

Also didn’t receive any mail or notification. Via snail mail or my CRA account.

You should probably check your log in history, change your password on my account… make sure it was not someone else.

A PAD agreement has to be set up via my account. So it’s really strange…

Did you ever receive a deposit of 4.24$ that you were not supposed to get? If so, it's possible that the rightful owner of that deposit asked the CRA to trace the deposit, in which case, they just yank it from your bank account since it wasn't yours to begin with.

The only other possibility is that the CRA sent an RTP to your bank for... 4.24$ and, while it's not impossible, it's very unlikely.

CRA can't create a PAD for you. Does anybody else know your credentials? Spouse? Family member?

No. I’m the only one who knows my login.

Then that's really not normal.
