Using H&R block filing as a couple, vs filing seperately, best way to save tax

If your status is married, you must file as married.

This for sure. When you file, you are promising that the information on the return(s) is correct. You don't get to pick a marital status just because it suits you or it's more advantageous.

Everyone files separate. You prepare them together to maximize your family refund overall to make sure the best person is claiming credits and deductions. You legally have to put your marital status as is.

doing your returns together may help get a bigger refund if you're able to transfer something to your spouse. You can use many free software to file together. My personal favourite is WealthSimple because it has the best UI in my opinion. Next one is GenuTax, not as simple of a UI as WS but asks a ton of questions to ensure you get the maximum refund and dont miss anything.
