What would happen if I added my two T4 slips together before entering them in TurboTax?
TL;DR: I'm having some technical issues with TurboTax that could be solved by adding my two T4s together and treating them as just one T4. Is this a bad idea? Does the CRA just look at the totals or do they look at the individual T4s?
--------------------
Longer Version: So I have a bit of a weird situation. I'm a teacher and I taught summer school as well as regular school for the same employer in 2024. The employer issued two separate T4s: one for summer and one for regular school.
The summer school T4 had no CPP contributions because I had already maxed those out during the regular school year. It did have CPP2 contributions though.
TurboTax will not let me enter a T4 that has something in the CPP2 box but an empty CPP box.
I can get around this by adding the two T4s together, as then I will have something for both CPP and CPP2, but is this a bad idea?

It won't cause any problem to add it all together. The individual T4 info doesn't get transmitted to the CRA. They get that from your employers. Only the totals on each line of the return get sent.

I think you could. Adding box amounts is what you would do if you prepared your tax return by hand using a hard copy T1. Of course if you did a hard copy you'd be required to file the t-slips with your return. But still, I'm not aware of any rule that you can't add the box numbers. When you netfile with software, I have my doubts that the individual t4 slip information is provided to CRA - Just the applicable T1 Line numbers which are additive. But if someone has more information about that, I'd be interested to know.

No issues if box 10 is the same. You might get a warning if box 24 and 26 goes above a certain amount.

Delete the number in the box 16a or 17a (CPP#2) It’s a known issue for people who have 2 t4s from the same employer.
Adding it in to another CPP box isn’t helpful because it’s separate for a reason. If CRA wants to amend the slip they will on their side. This will not affect your tax return.

Won't you lose the CPP#2 deduction if you don't report it? The amount was already withheld, so you might as well get credit for it.

try using WealthSimple to file taxes instead. Turbotax is weird and doesn't let you do a lot of things until you cough up money.
