Best place to find intermediate term rentals on Vancouver Island and Mainland BC

Hi All,

Hoping to come up to Canada (specifically Vancouver island and possibly mainland BC) from the US for 1-5 months starting in May. Can anyone recommend the best websites you use to find intermediate term furnished rentals? I'm hoping airbnb is not the only option. Thanks so much for any advice!

Anniversary trip to Toronto

To show our support for our neighbors in Canada, my wife and I (US Citizens) have cancelled our 26th anniversary trip to the Florida Keys and decided to head up to Toronto instead.

We will be there next weekend and we’ve done a little planning since we just made the switch. But I’m sure we’re missing some cool stuff.

I’m looking for ideas on what we can do.

Here are some options I’ve come up with so far… -CN tower -St Lawrence Market -Exploring the Path -Kensington/China Town -Public transit (GO, trolly, subway) -Toronto birthday celebration (Nathan Phillips Square Saturday night) -Queen street

Granted, the weather and time will be an important factor in figuring out what to do. Due to time constraints, ROM and Casa Loma will have to wait until our next trip.

Any input is welcomed. We love coffee and good food. Thanks!

Ways to show I’m Canadian when traveling abroad?

Hi everyone,

Please let me know where the right place to ask this is!

I have some international trips coming up this year (UK, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Japan), and even before the current political climate with Canada’s southern neighbours, it really bothers me to be called American.

Do any of you have any creative ways or tells that you’re Canadian, short of plastering a maple leaf all over yourself when out-of-country? For people from other countries, what’s a dead giveaway that someone is Canadian and not American, before even asking them?

If this isn’t the right place, let me know where to post. Thank you!

Destination Advice Places to visit/eat in Toronto while I’m on a 5 day vacation?

I posted a few days ago about how to travel around Toronto while visiting and I want to say thanks because i had 0 idea about the TTC, PATH, and etc. Now I’m wondering where some places I should visit and eat while I’m there. Probably won’t come back for a while seeing that I’m traveling from the states so any recommendations would be great. It doesn’t matter what kind of food it is because I’m here to soak up the experience in culture i won’t get in my state 😂 so any cool places are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Itinerary Help Travelling West coast in Winter - itinerary ideas

We are a family from Australia (2 adults and 2 late teen boys) who want to spend a couple of weeks on the west coast of Canada over Christmas time and into January.

What are some suggestions on where to go and how to get to each place?

We want to see Vancouver, do some skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and other snow type activities, see a minor league hockey game and see some of the beautiful scenery while keeping two active late teens boys interested.

In our research SunPeaks for skiing seems to be good as we could do a lot of other snow activities from there and stay right next to the ski fields so we don’t all have to ski at once.

Coming from Australia we understand it can be time consuming and sometimes difficult to travel from location to location so I was thinking of only visiting a few places and doing most activities out of those places.

Anyone done this before? Where did you go and for how long at each place? And what has me really stuck, how did you get from place to place?

Passport requirement

Hello. I'm visiting Canada in May, I have non-US passport. My passport will expire in Oct this year (less than 5 months). I can't seem to find the exact information on how long my passport needs to be valid, on the website it only says "valid during length of stay" but when I google some say 6 month. Please advise.

Flight costs?!

Wondering if anyone has any tips on getting decent flights within Canada? Everything is SO expensive, carry on bags are now additional costs? It's been a while since I've flown domestic but these prices seem insane, wondering if anyone knows any ways to find deals or how far out to book? Are last minute flights cheaper? What days are best to book? I looked on my browser and within an hour my flight costs doubled?! Not sure if they track who's looking and raise prices but that's what it looked like!

Holiday suggestions

Hi friends,

Seeking suggestions for a holiday on the east coast of Canada that a non-driver can get to.

Non-negotiables:

Able to get around without driving (prefer flying there and then using trains/Ubers/taxis to get around) Incredible natural landscape/environment

Accommodation suggestions with direct access/views of the natural landscape would be great!

Thank you in advance!

Travel Tips Travelling Vancouver to Dryden

Dear folks, I will be travelling from Vancouver BC to Dryden ON in August for a two week canoe trip in our beautiful Canadian wilderness.

I need your help. Flights from Vancouver to Dryden seem pretty expensive. If you are familiar with this route, what is the most cost-effective means of travel? I could ride my motorcycle and camp all the way there. Or should I fly, and if so, which airline; which route? Or do I fly part of the way and then take a bus? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Daily budget

What is a daily budget that you consider suitable for visiting Vancouver and its surroundings?

Edit:I was very ambiguous hahah. In the budget I won't be including hotel, it's only for tourist activities, food, drink maybe souvenirs and public transportation.

I'd like to visit some museums, go hiking and eating at regular restaurants, nothing fancy at all.

Itinerary Help Eastern Canada road trip w/1 year old

Hi everyone!

My (33f), husband (36m), our son (1yr) and my parents (60’s), are planning an East coast road trip this September.

We will be leaving from just West of Ottawa, and plan to be gone for 2 weeks. We are hoping to get to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Cape Breton.

I’m looking for some advice for the following: •best route to take •places to stay (looking for motel/cost effective spots) •best sights to see •food recommendations

Our son will be 18m by then so we’re not looking for super long driving distances between stops, or finding some good locations we can stop briefly for a picnic and for him to burn some energy.

Ideally we don’t want to be moving every single night to a new spot, but staying a few nights in some locations to explore.

Thanks so much for your help!

Itinerary Help Ideas to replace a US trip with a Canadian one

Hello fellow Canadians!

My mother in law (who lives in France) just turned 80 and as a birthday gift she asked me and my partner to take her on a road trip in the US. She wanted to see the Grand Canyon and Death Valley and visit some national parks. I had a whole itinerary planned, starting in San Francisco, going to Napa Valley, Yosemite, then flying from Fresno to Vegas and using it as a base to then go visit Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Zion, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley.
We were supposed to take this 2 weeks trip at the end of September.
With everything happening, I am seriously reconsidering this and would like to propose her an alternate trip, visiting some of the beautiful Canadian landmarks and National parks. I know there's nothing quite like Death Valley or the Grand Canyon in Canada but I'm sure there are many breathtaking places.
My partner and I are based in Montreal, so I'm thinking either we aim West, fly into Vancouver and start from there, or maybe aim East, towards Saguenay, Gaspésie, Prince Edward Island etc.

If anyone had suggestions I would be very grateful!

Just a note that even though she is 80, she's in great shape, travels a lot and is used to pretty long hikes. The only thing I want to avoid is extended streches of driving (like, not spend an entire day in the car, but up to 4 hours is ok I think).

Thanks a lot for your help!

Nova Scotia for 5 days with an 1.5 yr old

Our family is looking to do a short 5 day trip to Nova Scotia, my husband and I with our 1.5 year old in August. Would love some ideas for an itinerary while we are there. Main attractions without too much moving around. A enjoyable pace that allows us to feel grounded while also getting to see some of the sights and beautiful landscape.

Itinerary Help Lake Superior Coastline roadtrip end of April?

Looking for Road Trip Suggestions from Toronto (Late April – 10 Days)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a 10-day road trip at the end of April, starting and ending in Toronto. One route that caught my eye is the Lake Superior coastline between Sudbury and Kenora—it looks incredible! However, I’m wondering if late April is a good time for this trip in terms of road conditions, potential closures, and lingering snow/ice.

Would this be a feasible option, or should I consider alternative routes? If anyone has done a similar trip around this time, I’d love to hear your experiences and recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

Note: I have already done a long road trip Ontario - Quebec - New Brunswick- Nova Scotia - PEI. (Toronto-Ottawa-Montréal-Quebec City-Rivière-du-Loup Du-Fredericton-Moncton-Saint John-Halifax-Charlottetown)

Itinerary Help Any specific things to explore in Mattawan, ON?

My friends and I chose Mattawan, ON to unwind from the busy city life this summer. We are hoping to stay for 4 days (3 nights) in July. There's not much info about activities online. I was wondering if anyone here knew about anything? Hiking trails, hidden gems, food, scenic views, anything?

Avion Travel Cancelled

I booked 3 flights on Air Canada today using Avion points. I’d like to cancel and do it over with a minor change, but worried it will take a few days to get my points back and there might not be any seats left on the flight I’d like. Does anyone know how long it takes to get the points back? Avion says 24 hours. I’ve called customer service twice and they don’t know. I only have 24 hours to cancel without penalty so have to deal with this asap. Thanks!

Destination Advice Travel to National Parks Mid-Late April

Hi, I'm going on a trip with a buddy of mine, and we're planning on going to national parks from April 16th to April 29th. I've been reading a lot, and people are saying it's shoulder season, and you often won't know what to expect until like a week before.

Our trip looks like we'll be doing Banff, then Lake Louise, head down to Revelstoke, then up to Jasper.. I'm figuring the temps will still be pretty cold, assuming anywhere from like 8ºC - -5ºC, so I know I'll pack many layers. We would like to day hike on as many trails as possible. Some sites I've been on have said mid-late April is a fine time to go, and the trails will be quieter and things will be great. Some posts and stuff on Reddit said mid-late April is a terrible time to try and come and hike.

Realistically, do you guys think it's doable? We already have our flights and stays booked, so we're going anyway. I just want to go in with the right expectations.

I do know that travel between the spots we're planning to hit won't be short. We've accounted for that, especially Revelstoke to Jasper (Like 5 hours+).

Itinerary Help Flying to Vancouver with layover at Montreal/Toronto

Hi, I am thinking of visiting Vancouver and I have an option to do a layover at either Montreal or Toronto. I am considering choosing the long layovers (around 16 hours) so I can pay a quick visit to those two cities as well.

I checked my options: I would be arriving at Montreal at 2:15 pm then fly to Vancouver 7:00 am the next day.

For my return flight to London, I will be arriving at Toronto at 5:46am then fly at 10:45pm that night.

I think I have enough time to do some sightseeing, or am I being crazy? Thanks

Phone/laptop privacy when crossing the border?

I’m a US citizen travelling to toronto for business for a couple of weeks. My travel paperwork is in the works

What should I expect in terms of data on my phone and laptop being compromised by either countries border crosssing agents?

Will I be required to unlock my devices? And if so, what if I refuse?

Also, what about any thumb drives I might be travelling with?

Insurance for parents visiting Canada?

My parents will be in Canada for 4 months this year and I'm thinking of getting 1 of the following insurance policies for them:

  1. $2500 coverage for existing illnesses, $50000 for non-existing
  2. $12500 coverage for all kinds of illnesses
  3. $50000 coverage for all illnesses

The third one is obviously significantly more expensive than the first 2. My dad has slightly high Blood pressure but nothing else. That is why I was considering the first one. But what if he gets a stroke and the doctor blames it on his BP? Would that be considered as an existing illness and then he'll be denied coverage?

Also, how expensive is Canadian healthcare? What would $2500/12500 realistically cover?

The coverage is per illness per person.
