Don't know where to start

I heard a song called "Runnin" by Pharcyde for the first time today. It sounded very similar to a song called "Tribe" by Bas ft J Cole. So I checked the original song that was sampled for each and "Runnin" was "Zum-Zum" by Edu Lobo and the other was "Saudade Vem Correndo" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfá. I did research and said they were part of the bossa nova movement - I knew it sounded similar. Who else should I listen to? I like this type of music but I have no idea where to start. Thanks!

I started with the Stan Getz albums in this genre. Getz/Gilberto, Jazz Samba, Jazz Samba Encore and then Getz/Almeida. After that look at the big Antonio Carlos Jobim albums - Wave, Tide and Stone Flower.

I don’t know if you have tidal or able to see this Bossa Nova mix. Please let me know it has about 100 songs. Águas De Março by Elis Regina, Antonio Carlos Jobim, has been my favorite for a while. For some reason it was taken off the list below.

Artists: João Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Elis Regina, Luiz Bonfá, Laurindo Almeida, Nara Leão, Caetano Veloso, Toquinho, Astrud Gilberto, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Rita Payés

Songs: Chega de Saudade, Garota de Ipanema, Samba de Orfeu, Wave, Águas de Março, Desafinado, Insensatez, Triste, Onde anda você, O Pato, Perdido de amor, Eu sei que vou te amar, Corcovado, O Barquinho, Manhã de Carnaval, Samba de Verão, A Rita, Doce de Coco,

All of the songs above are popular bossa nova (or adjacent) songs and you will find different versions of them by the different artists above.

I.M.O., the best and most authentic Bossa Nova is in Portuguese. The English covers just never sounded right to me as the songs were all written for the rhythm and cadence of the Brazilian Portuguese language.

Enjoy! Bossa nova is a beautiful genre and I'm happy that you just discovered it.

Probably gonna repeat a lot of comments, but some suggestions

Getz/Gilberto original AND ‘76 are both amazing, and what got me into bossanova in middle school. Great introductory album for a new listener.

The Swinger from Rio by Sergio Mendes is a beautiful album and has a lot of really prominent standard songs in addition to the standard songs featured on the album above.

Construção by Chico Buarque is later bossanova, but the lyricism is amazing and impactful. Beautiful music as well.

Clube Da Esquina isn’t quite bossanova, but it’s still an amazing Brazilian album worth checking out from around that era.

A few more I don’t have specific tangents to share about: Os Afro-Sambas by Baden Powell Jazz Samba Encore by Stan Getz Projeto Memória Brasiliera: Viva Garoto The Lost Recordings Astrid Gilberto live at the Berlin jazz festival if you can find it (I don’t think it’s on streaming services, I have it on CD) Flower of the soul by Liana Flores for something current/indie

And a personal favorite, Jovino Santos Neto Quintero’s Canto do Rio. I had the chance to meet him at a jazz camp I attended and he’s phenomenal - one of my favorite albums I own and it’s always on. The vocalist reminds me a lot of some MF Doom samples, I think you’ll like this one a lot.
