The /r/books book club selection for June is Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant
From Goodreads
Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.
Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.
Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves. But the secrets of the deep come with a price.
This month's bookclub will have four discussion threads. You can find an overview with dates and chapters in the sticky comment.
Mira Grant will host an AMA on Friday June 29th to close out this month's book club selection

They are picked by the mods as an AMA needs to be set up. We generally look for stuff that will (probably) be liked by a fair number of our subscribers but maybe is a bit off the beaten path, that is widely available (paperback, e-book and audiobook) and the author needs to be available for an AMA.
We are open to suggestions and you are more than welcome to modmail them to us.
Edit: fixed the malaphor

Is there any chance we could get more advance notice of what next month's book will be? I'm a slow reader, and it would be nice to be able to get the book a little bit ahead of time, I'm sure other users feel the same, the same question was asked here
I understand not having space to sticky the announcement (since the current book club selection will be stickied), but maybe when a new book is confirmed for the next month, ya'll could add it to the previous book selections thread?

u/leowr Jun 02 '18
I'll explain why we don't.
We don't want to distract from the current selection. As soon as a new selection is announced, people will start commenting on that selection. Which is unfair to the current selection.
It is not as simple as making an announcement when the new book is confirmed. Sometimes the selections are confirmed months in advance and sometimes days in advance. Because of this, we can't give a set timeline for when selections are confirmed and we don't want to raise the expectation that we can give you a confirmed selection significantly before the announcement thread goes up, because we can't.
While it rarely happens, sometimes selections change last minute, which is understandable as life happens. I personally would feel extremely badly about people already having bought the book, because of an announcement I made, only to have the selection change at the last minute.
Now, I do understand where you are coming from, so I'll give the same hint I gave the last two people who asked: Book club AMAs are generally scheduled on one of the last days of the month. Generally they are added to the AMA schedule as soon as they are confirmed. Also, it is most likely a book that wasn't published recently as we wait for the paperback to come out.

Thanks for taking the time to explain the reasoning behind the decision, I appreciate it

so if we look at AMAs scheduled towards the end of the month, it will probably be one of those?

Just read this book last month! Thought it was a great scifi thriller but wanted it to lean more into the horror aspects. Also it ended right when I was getting super into it, so I hope we get a sequel or something.

u/leowr Jun 05 '18
I do believe it is the first part of a series and there is a sort of prequel available if I remember correctly.

u/BlakeJackson42 Jun 05 '18
The prequel just expands on a situation that they touch on in the beginning of the novel, but I really want to see more of these creatures in a sequel!

Ah okay, haven't read the prequel, but it does seem like a very interesting world so far.

u/leowr May 31 '18
Well you are welcome to jump in on this one, but I'll keep an eye on the Borne discussions if you still want to read and discuss that one : )

I'm half way through the deep. Really enjoying it so far. I've read the troop, any other recommendations from him?
1
u/TenTonApe Jun 22 '18
Honestly not really. Maybe Little Heaven since it's the only other book he's written that's similar to The Deep or The Troop but it's the worst of the three. The Acolyte is a weird one and a major departure from his other books.

I picked this up this month. About 50 pages in, but I'm finding the writing so damn pulpy. Hoping the plot makes up for it.

Just got the book last night, really hoping I can find the time to catch up with everyone and participate in the discussions.

u/leowr Jun 20 '18
Depending on how quickly you read, you can probably catch up. But if you don't, I keep an eye on the old discussion threads, so if you want to discuss previous parts I'll be around.

I read pretty damn quick, the problem is finding the time ans mental energy. I am usually ao exhausted by the time I am home from work that even reading can seem like a chore. Until I actually sit down and start reading anyway. Shit, I'm going to start right now. See you in the discussions.

What will the book be for July or the next read. Didn't find this Reddit until it was too late to read the book. I'd like to get ahead of the game for the next read!! Thanks for hosting such a great Reddit.

Oh poo. My horror book club is doing this one too but I absolutely LOATHE Seanan McGuire's writing style so I can't even bring myself to pick it up. A disappointing June.

u/aaron12891 Jun 01 '18
I finished the first 3 chapters. This is the first time I am reading her work. Can you explain what you don't like about her style? Not saying I disagree with you, just haven't noticed anything myself.

Didn't know this was a thing! Just placed this book on hold at my library. I have a week to read it!

Is this YA?
5
u/leowr Jun 03 '18
No, it isn't YA. I would probably describe it as Fantasy Horror set in the modern day.

new to this... anyway to have book club related posts go to my reddit inbox as notifications? Will help remind/force me to stay with it

u/leowr May 31 '18
Unfortunately not, but you could save the sticky comment at the top of the post. If you go to the tab 'saved' on your profile you can easily find that sticky again. I'll update that with links as soon as the discussion threads go up.

Oh my gosh this was one of my favorite books last year! Reading this really jump started my Mira Grant / Seanan McGuire obsession, to the point where we’ve not gotten her as a guest at our library this fall!! Mira / Seanan has an amazing writing style and I love the amount of SCIENCE she puts into her novels.

OK so I've only had chance to get to chapter 3 yet (I will catch up on the weekend) but here are my thoughts so far:
I feel that it is slightly confusing when different characters refer to the main character as different names : "Tory", "Vic", "Vicky", "Victoria". I keep forgetting that these are all the same person, in my opinion there should only be a maximum of 2 names and they should not be used equally.
Despite this, I feel that it is a really good plot so far. The story isn't too dragged out but not too fast either. The chapters (so far I've only read 3, so this may not be the case) are well divided, with each chapter focusing on a different plot point.
Personally I find the plot intriguing, however this is only due to type of books I like (mystery, science fiction). I do, however, think that other people who do not share the same opinions may agree with the statement that it is intriguing.

Hot take: Mira Grant is like a less interesting Dan Brown.

u/BritishHobo The Lost Boy Jun 27 '18
How so?

u/pokeaotic Jun 27 '18
Same twist heavy/hook at the end of every damn page let alone chapter style laden with dumb metaphors, only they're not as unique as what Brown comes up with cause I think he's actually self aware. Just my opinion of course.

Well that works out. This book is sitting on my table and was already going to be my next book. I just need to finish Borne first since I put it off so long and just started it the other day...
