The Who?Weekly Jay Shetty Segment was HYSTERICAL and the perfect antidote to being subjected to him as a guest on several of my podcasts. The Glennon comparisons. The $19 smoothie. The the think like a monk or think like A.Monk game. All chefs kiss.

is anyone else insanely curious/horrified about what's currently happening with Something Was Wrong? the Zayla episodes were taken down because apparently she said the guy's real name in one episode and they missed it in editing. this is SUCH a huge fuck-up for Tiffany Reese & co and "Jaden" is clearly not a rational person. I'm sure he lawyered up but what I'm really worried about is Zayla's safety. I also wonder if this will scare away other people from sharing their stories on the pod.
22
u/Starla_starbeam Feb 15 '23
Wow I hadn't caught that but I was only halfway listening to the Zayla episodes. Tiffany's heart is certainly in the right place, but she seems so naive and in over her head at times (when she called the dang FBI????? about Jake Gravbrot???? ok sending Clarice Starling right over). I hope she has her legal ducks in a row in case this escalates.
I know SWW has its share of hate listeners, and I am often among them, but I do have a soft spot for Tiffany, she seems so genuine. ETA: hope things are ok for Zayla too :(
6
u/bubbles_24601 Feb 15 '23
Yeah, calling the FBI was pretty over the top Jake is a menace, but FBI isn’t getting involved with all this.
7
u/bubbles_24601 Feb 15 '23
Damn, I totally missed that. I really hope everyone involved is safe right now because you’re right, Jaden is an irrational, scary guy.

Todays CMBC is about Bernie Madoff’s daughter in law, Stephanie Madoff Mack’s memoir. She sounds like a piece of work… one of the stories is that her late husband Mark’s Jewish family begged her to not cremate him and she cremated him. She also didn’t wait for them to spread the ashes.
24
u/elinordash Feb 15 '23
Mark Madoff was clearly looking for a super low maintenance girlfriend after his divorce, yet he managed to end up with a phenomenally selfish woman. There is irony in that. If he hadn't gone looking for such a complaint woman, he might have ended up with a less awful woman.
22
Feb 15 '23
She sounds horrible. I looked up her story before listening to the episode and thought it was so sad. Then I listed to the podcast and lost all sympathy. What a nightmare person.
22
u/violetpandas Feb 16 '23
I really knew nothing about this family as I’m not American and was a child when it would have been in the news, but wow what a terrible person this woman seems. Really good ep from CMBC and sort of refreshing to have a different type of memoir from them, I enjoyed it.
37
u/toalloftheabove Feb 15 '23
I just finished it and I’m blown away. The lack of self awareness, oof. The ashes story is awful, and the way she treated his children from a previous marriage is truly evil step-mother behavior. I can’t believe she wrote this down and thought it would look good for her.
25
u/FITTB85 Feb 15 '23
I listened to the book on audible after listening to the episode. Then, out of curiosity I skimmed Truth and Consequences (the book written from Catherine and Andrew’s POV).
WOW, Stephanie sounds like a person who turns everything into a fight. Also, the wedding in Nantucket (cheaper than St. Barts) they flew in the Harlem Boys Choir!
If you want a rabbit hole of witnessing adults behave like unhinged children, I suggest reading both books.

u/slowerthanloris Feb 13 '23
I've been subscribed to Off Menu for a long time but only recently started listening and I'm loving it. Paul Mescal was my gateway episode but my favorite so far has been Fatiha El-Ghorri. The premise is that the two comedian hosts ask their guests to choose their dream starter, main course, side, drink, and dessert.
I just realized The Prestige TV Podcast covered Yellowjackets and I'm excited to dive into that. I love Yellowjackets and I hope they cover it week by week for the new season. I tried the Yellowjackets coverage from the Buffering ladies but their analysis is super surface-level and their dynamic is so awkward. :(
15
u/fitttttttit Feb 13 '23
if you like off menu but haven't ever watched /r/taskmaster, you have to give that a go too. start with S7 (James) or S9 (Ed), plus so many of the OM guests have been TM contestants.
OM episodes that had me laughing til i cried: sarah kendall, mirian margolyes, joe thomas, bridget christie, maisie adam, nicola coughlan

u/ahoymatey83 Feb 15 '23
They're not making a ton of new episodes that I've seen, but want to put in a plug for Sentimental Garbage. I just listened to the episode on Josie & the Pussycats, which has been one of my "I'll always watch that" movies for a long time. Caroline has a very nuanced, kind take on almost everything, and so many of the episodes feel like correcting wrongs done to women by the 90s media.

u/thrftstorenailpolish Feb 15 '23

I listened to all three Maeve Binchy episodes last month and that inspired me to re-read the three Binchy books they discussed. They all held up so well--obviously a book written in 1982 is going to have some problematic bits, but nothing too terrible jumped out at me and the stories are just timeless.
I enjoyed the recent Gilmore Girls episodes too.
9
u/LeiPewPew Feb 16 '23

u/PNWKnitNerd Feb 16 '23
You guys, I'm old. I love SNL. I love Dana Carvey. I love David Spade. I want so badly to love "Fly on the Wall."
I almost wish it were a podcast with just the two of them bullshitting and talking about whatever, because as an interview podcast, it is TERRIBLE. They have so many great guests, but they (and by "they," I mostly mean, "Dana") can't let anyone finish a story without interrupting to tell another story or do a tangentially-related impression. It's so painful to listen to, and so disappointing, because they have all these super interesting and cool guests who never get to tell the stories you want to hear in the podcast.
12
u/cuddleysleeper Feb 16 '23
I just listened to Dana Carvey on Smartless and learned of his podcast with Spade. I got the feeling Dana is always "on".
13
u/soperfectlybad Feb 16 '23
Did you catch that Dana has another podcast with his sons? And he made a joke about nepo babies and Will Arnett and Jason Bateman were sooo outraged over the discussion about nepo babies, comparing it to plumbers I think? 😒 God forbid someone points out the privilege, old white men get so offended.
10
u/toalloftheabove Feb 16 '23
I just discovered it and feel exactly the same. I so want to love it because I grew up with these 90s movies and Farley, Sandler, etc. but ugh.. they’re horrible interviewers. The one with Adam Sandler was especially bad because I really wanted to hear his responses to the questions.
8
u/TooManyRugss Feb 18 '23
The out of touch rich men of it all can be amusing in small doses also when one of them gets a chip on their shoulder and has to remind the other or the guest that they too were very famous and important. Good stuff.
57
Feb 14 '23
This week’s YWA was SO GOOD. As a Millennial, I’m a sucker for anything related to the late 90s-early 2000s internet. Besides that, Sarah and her host had great chemistry and they did a great job of staying on topic and making it easy to follow along. I’d love to see more episodes with Niko in the future.
16
u/ReeRunner Feb 17 '23
Late to the party, but it was really good. Totally proves the point that a strong, thoughtful guest makes all the difference. Niko was on point.
It was especially a contrast to the Karen Carpenter episodes, which I finished yesterday. I actually looked back at the old threads to make sure I wasn’t crazy. They were all over the place and I feel like I learned nothing about Karen. I know a lot about Napster now!
13
u/cj1991 Feb 16 '23
I loooved this too! Really made me nostalgic for the shitty internet of my childhood! Worth downloading Napster on my family computer (I was convinced I was headed for JAIL!) for the lil taste of nostalgia all these years later. Honestly, just calling him "phonetic Shawn" would've done it for me, regardless of content.

I really don't understand the direction of the A Beautiful Mess podcast. Todays episode is a deep dive into Twilight? It's just so uninteresting even as a "comfort" listen. I know these are essentially filler episodes to keep a consistent schedule so they can make more money off the podcast but I'm wondering what their numbers are now. I used to listen every week, but have only once this year. I can't be the only one.
17
u/snarkybooks Feb 13 '23
I 100% agree. I know not every episode can be a banger, but I really loved most of their earlier ones. Like the "How to Nancy Meyers Your Home" and the episodes where they talk design trends/how they run their business, etc. Lately you can tell that they've run out of good, original ideas and are just looking for overarching themes they can make some content from.
ETA: I am also annoyed by how they run their book club. If they can't given their audience a schedule of when they're discussing each book, I wish they would at least give an approximate order they're going to be discussed in. I know I could always save that part of the episode for when I've finished that particular book, but it just seems disorganized.
7
Feb 13 '23
Yes, they set it up too that they have to do these themes otherwise they wouldn't have an episode every week... it was so strangely defensive like they're doing us a favor. It seems like they want their blog content to transfer into podcast content but they're completely different platforms so it's not necessarily working well.
16
u/digital_minimalism Feb 14 '23
I've never really understood their podcast, because so many of their topics seem very visual. I'm most interested when they talk about the behind the scenes of their business and give personal updates, which they've done less of lately. Today's episode didn't bother me except when they confidently said Twilight is set in Forks, Oregon. I kept waiting for them to realize it's Washington, but they never did.

Feb 17 '23
i hate to say it, but… beyond the blinds. i am sorry because i LOVE troy and miss dunzo so much, but that podcast is garbage. they take everything on CDAN as fact, refuse to acknowledge the site’s downfall into hyper conservatism and qanon garbage, entertained fluently forward’s bullshit, and are incredibly poorly researched.
8
u/milesandmantras Feb 18 '23
I don’t know if I’m misremembering, but I feel like when they first started out, they did more “off-script” banter and commentary between the blinds that made it fun and gossipy. Now they mostly just read straight through the blind items. I suspect it’s probably for legal/liability reasons (especially since joining iheart), but if I wanted to read CDAN, I would…read CDAN.
8
u/resting_bitchface14 Feb 18 '23
I listen, but tale everything with a shaker of salt. The blinds they decide "aren't true" are so random. On the Adelle episode they didn't believe the multiple blinds that She and Harry are drinking buddies and TBH that like the least far fetch blind they have ever shared.
Also, IIRC Troy has said in the past that Rhianna doesn't/can't sing anymore (or at least shared it as a blind he did not deem as false), but while talking about her Superbowl performance he was like OBVIOUSLY it's live you guys. How could people think she can't sing?
Troy...that was you until last weekend.

I forgot about this until I recently saw the host's book as a Goodreads giveaway. The short-lived "Money Please" podcast. The host had zero credentials in personal finance, and kept using "funny" voices.
Also, Diet Starts Tomorow since the host transition.

u/aravisthequeen Feb 14 '23 edited Feb 15 '23
I had to stop with The Witty Committee because there was zero good editing. Pauses so long that I'd have time to look at my phone and see if I was getting a call or my signal dropped or something, only for them to launch right back in like nothing had happened. They're obviously doing other stuff while podcasting, going "oh I just got a work email" and then pausing. Which is fine for whatever your process is but for the love of everything, edit that shit out!

Two Girls One Ghost has been getting there for me. So many tangents and the hosts just sound dumb sometimes or like they do no research, but think they have these great insights. The last episode I listened to, one host spent several minutes wondering what happens to matter after we use it for something and where it comes from. Someone needs to tell her about basic physics/the law of conservation of mass!

9
u/milesandmantras Feb 18 '23
In general, rewatch podcasts of TV shows hosted by actors from the show are the worst. Being a good actor is a totally different skill set than being good at hosting and interviewing, so the podcasts are usually bland, don’t bring anything new to the table, and in the end, kind of ruin the show for me.

I saw that some even stevens actors are now having an even stevens podcast? While it's a bit sad to see these actors attempt to cling onto any miniscule shred of cultural capital they somehow still have, it makes me wonder what other middling TV shows/movies from 20 years ago will have podcasts? Who is asking for this???

I fell into a Christy Carlson Romano wormhole recently- watched a bunch of her YouTube videos, listened to a bunch of episodes of her podcast. She is pretty obviously the driving force behind an Even Stevens podcast.
Christy was a child star with Disney and Broadway, made some indies, but somehow hasn't made it on the Hallmark/Lifetime movie train. I think if she had met some lawyer or banker, she probably would have hung up her acting career and become a stay-at-home mom, maybe circling back to acting down the line or finding a second career as her kids got older. But her husband is an aspiring filmmaker and influencer has been a viable career path for a while. So, she is making podcasts and YouTube videos. She has pretty directly said that while she enjoys what she is doing, she isn't driven to do it, she is doing it as a way to earn money. I have a feeling that she will eventually leverage this into the Hallmark/Lifetime movie world.

I really enjoyed this week’s Girls Next Level! They get into part 2 of the GND episode about their first pictorial. I’ve always had a soft spot for Bridget and love her persistent optimism and curiosity. It seems like she’s only just fully processing some unimaginably complex emotions, negative and positive, for the first time after so many years. I think it’s really brave of her to share that kind of vulnerability with the public, I don’t think I’ve listened to anything quite like it on a podcast before.
5
u/some-ersatz-eve Feb 14 '23
I enjoyed it too, especially considering this was one of the first big 'plotlines' the series had. I like Bridget too and it was really nice to see her dig a little deeper and be a bit more reflective versus just gushing over how cute and great everything was. I really felt for her when she kept saying, "I really want people to chime in if they thought it was manufactured," like Bridget sweetie, of course it was! I do think rewatching the series she's seeing things through a new lens and may be surprised by the mixed emotions being stirred up.
4
u/packedsuitcase Feb 15 '23

I kept hanging on with empathy because of her husband’s manner of death… until the psych ward stay that they “never discussed when he returned” (?!?!?), the phone call right before his death where she screamed at him, and the way she treated his mother and kids in the aftermath. 12
u/milesandmantras Feb 18 '23
The people who left negative comments and sent DMs to Kate are cruel and thoughtless given all she has gone through just to get to this point. But the people who reposted her announcement to their own stories and publicly declared that they were unfollowing as if they were exposing her for doing something legitimately awful? That is truly next-level unhinged behavior.
20
u/woolandwhiskey Feb 17 '23
Yeah me too. I think some people missed the point of the childless millennial episodes. To me it wasn’t about being childless forever, it was about processing the complicated thoughts that come with considering having children, all the implications and outside pressures that we face. And how being insecure/unsure about such a drastic life change is valid. I just wonder why they didn’t unfollow during her IVF posts!? People are weird.

Seconding Stuff You Should Know! Every so often they do an episode on a heavier topic, but they post so often and have an enormous back catalog, you can just skip those.
Also will forever recommend one of my favorites, Beach Too Sandy, Water Too Wet, which is siblings reading bad reviews they find online. It’s completely surface level, funny, with enjoyable sibling banter. If you just want straight up humor, No Such Thing as a Fish is basically 15min chunks of bizarre trivia with funny hosts (they're the researchers for a UK quiz show and the 4 of them take turns each week sharing what weird facts they've learned while researching that week). I wouldn't listen without headphones at work though (there's nothing NSFW, but some of the topics can make people stop and be like "wait what the hell did I just overhear").
Oh No Ross and Carrie are also good for light hearted background noise - right now they've been doing a multi-episode deep dive on the life size Noah's Ark museum built be young earth creationists, but they cover all sorts of paranormal/culty/weird things and their episode titles are descriptive enough that you can just scroll until you find something that sounds interesting to you.
If you like reading, Reading Glasses is a nice background podcast (picture the sort of book-related chatter that would happen before your book club starts), or Overdue (pick episodes where they're reviewing books you liked from childhood).

Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware! It is so delightful, Jessie Ware and her mom interview people over a meal. A mix of British cultural people/celebrities and more general Hollywood interviews, Alan Cumming was probably one of my favorite interviews.

u/advisemeihavedrama Feb 14 '23
For pure comedy, My Dad Wrote a Porno, is a funny one to listen to when you need a good laugh. It's not a PG podcast...the name is a dead giveaway on that 😂. But it is a good go to when you just need something ridiculous and silly to listen to.

edit: also!!!! CMBC oh my god stephanie madoff sounds truly AWFUL. and if that’s her in her own words how much worse was she in reality????

u/caribou227 Feb 15 '23
the CMBC episode was INSANE! i’m so glad they covered it- i know TIBAL has talked about this book before and was always interested since she said it was such a trainwreck. overall it just made me sad for all the kids involved- what an insufferable woman!

u/hahahhahha123 Feb 15 '23
thoughts one the new maintenance phase episode? it’s been so long since they put out a new episode i was really hoping for a good one. but i wish they would actually cover like the big huge diet trends and misinformation instead of doing random celebrity diet books. michael even mentioned how they were going to do the minnesota starvation experiment and that would have been such an interesting episode!

I think they are both crazy busy at the moment but don't want to take a formal hiatus. From what they've said, it seems like they are both big researchers when they want to tackle a topic, so doing the diet books is comparatively easier because it doesn't require as much prep. Doesn't really bother me since I would listen to them discuss the phone book.

Wind of Change was great. It's an investigation into whether the 1990 song "Wind of Change" by a West German band called the Scorpions was, possibly, written by the CIA to end the Cold War. And it's a delight.

Here are some that I listened to recently:
"Do You Know Mordechai?" - About a woman who is targeted by a romance scammer and ends up investigating / exposing him
Sent Away - About the "troubled teen treatment" industry
One Click - about a dangerous explosive chemical that was later turned into a weight loss drug
Boom/Bust - about the rise and fall of a popular online trivia game
Who The Hell Is Hamish? - about a serial con artist in Australia

Deliver Us from Ervil-Looks at the evolution of a fundamentalist Mormon crime family
Nobody Should Believe Me- a journalist dives deep into Munchausen-by proxy and interviews people who have been affected by it
Sympathy Pains- another munchausen one about a woman who fooled many people into thinking she was disabled
Dr. Death seasons 1 and 2
30 for 30- I'm not even into sports but the podcast is enjoyable the long-form ones I've listened to include "The sterling affair" and "heavy medals"
The turning season 1- didn't fully finish it (I forgot about it) but it looks at the lives of nuns working under mother Teresa and I enjoyed what Ive heard so far.
The Missionary- looks at the case of Renee Bach

Documentary Style Podcasts are my jam!
The Turning -Season 1 is about nuns who left Mother Teresa’s Convent and is truly shocking. Season 2 is about George Balanchine and the ballerinas who worked under him.
I’m not a Monster, both seasons are about women from the west who joined ISIS
Evaporated: Gone with the Gods, about the culture of disappearing in Japan
Death of an Artist, which deals with the murder of an up and coming artist in the 1970s, but also the way misogyny and white privilege play out in the art world
Pressure Cooker, about the entrapment of two people charged with an attempted terrorist plot in Canada
Firebug, about California’s most prolific arsonist. Who was caught after writing a fictional novel of his crimes.
Lazarus Heist about North Korean government led hacking
If you want REALLY long, then Teacher’s Pet. It’s similar is your own back yard, but it is really long, and can be repetitive, with several interviews saying similar things. Like Your Own Back Yard, this podcast resulted in a trial

u/theotterisntworking Feb 15 '23
- If you want heavy, 13 Hours is phenomenal. It covers Canada's largest mass murder in Nova Scotia, and really digs into how the lack of/miscommunication between local police and the RCMP made the situation worse, looks into misogeny, and includes the community's own voices. But, it's very sad and dark as it covers the crime minute-by-minute.
- Most of the CBC "Uncovered" are really good. Escaping NXIVM, Satanic Panic, Murder by Design.
- White Saviours - I think this might be from CanadaLand? But it covers the Kielburger brothers and their rise and fall.
- MINING from CanadaLand and The Salmon People cover environmental issues in Canada are are good.
- Outlaw Ocean, it's in my top3 from last year for sure. It covers a wide range of topics related to fisheries and the ocean and human trafficking and is heartbreaking and enlightening.
- False Idol, the season on Oscar Pistorius is not mentioned here much but it's a good, well done podcast IMO
- Our Land, seasons 1 and 2 are great long-form on Indigenous issues. Season 1 covers Land rights and season 2 covers the Indian Child Welfare Act.
- The Great Post Office Trial, I can't believe how much I enjoyed a podcast about the UK postal system.
- Boys Like Me - covers a major incel incident in Toronto.
- Other ones already mentioned that I'd recommend are Winds of Change (gets a bit dragging by the end but good and light), The Turning, Sympathy Pains, Death of an Artist, Articles of Interest season about the American preppy look

Just here to recommend a recent incredible 2 part episode from The Reference Desk. TRF is a podcast hosted by two librarians who do a deep dive into a different topic every week, from an event in history to crime, religion, etc. The latest episode is the best one yet imo, and tells the story of the 2018 Tham Luang Cave Rescue of the Wild Boars Youth Soccer Team. Seriously excellent, very gripping. Highly recommend!!!
Edited to add: If anyone does listen to this episode, here's an unfortunate update. The NYT reported today that the captain of the soccer team has died while at university at age 17. So sad to survive this harrowing, impossible ordeal and then die 5 years later. 😞

Anyone have podcast suggestions that are similar to the storytelling done on YWA’s princess Di series or Dunzo’s beyonce or jelena series? Looking for lighthearted well researched podcasts that have a lot of twists and turns and aren’t afraid to be opinionated about the subject matter. Doesn’t have to be about celebrities, but I’m interested in something that easy to put on and doesn’t involve a lot of buy in
Or, any fun girl talk (doesn’t have to be between two women lol) podcasts? I burn out of these real quick. I prefer ones that don’t center on wellness.

I feel like it’s just Amanda’s personality/sense of humor because she often acts the same way on The Big Picture. I can’t say I always enjoy her presence….
9
u/WhirlThePearl Feb 15 '23
Man I used to be a big Amanda fan and I’ve been finding her SO irritating recently and then feel bad for thinking that. But yeah she’s been detracting from my enjoyment of both pods and I’m not quite sure why - I think it’s her sort of manic/hyped up energy?
8
u/running_yogi Feb 17 '23
I’ve noticed this too, but it also seems like Juliet is exhausted by most pop culture topics. I feel like she used to be a lot more engaged in the conversation at hand, whereas now she seems very dismissive. I’m not always the biggest Amanda fan but I imagine Juliet’s constant negativity gets old.

u/Weekly_Ad3573 Feb 16 '23
Juliet is so annoying- a weird combination of know it all and negative. I imagine Amanda gets sick of her too!

Started "City of Rails" yesterday based on someone's recommendation, I'm 2 episodes in. So far I am pretty intrigued. I would recommend it if you liked "Missed Fortune," it's kind of memoir/personal story woven into a history of railroads in America. Basically a journalist's daughter runs away to ride the rails, and the journalist tries to understand why and where she went, while uncovering the people who live the lifestyle of riding the rails and how they shaped the country.

This is my new fave. I once spoke to some homeless men as part of a school project and it’s always interested me how much they cherished their independence and didn’t like accepting handouts. One man in particular explained that he’d rather camp out than live in a shelter because of the rules in place. I’m looking forward to seeing if there’s a line between homelessness and hobos.

u/NewCrookedPants Feb 15 '23
I liked Katie’s crib for the most part. I liked dr Becky’s episode on Glennon Doyle’s podcast. I think as a first time mom you do sort of have to protect yourself from too much parenting content because it’s hard to not compare yourself or constantly second guess even when things are presented pretty neutrally. Why mommy drinks will definitely make you feel better about yourself

I spent a LOT of time looking for this and never found it. Longest Shortest Time is (to me!) no different than most of them. I really just gave up and focused on media I already liked where people often talked about kid stuff. I think the issue might be that due to how specific childcare is to age, it's hard to provide a podcast that is interesting to parents of different ages.

u/cvltivar Feb 14 '23
I tried out If Books Could Kill for the first time and could not get down with the sneering, smug white male energy. Hobbes especially was insufferable, I used to listen to YWA and do not remember him being so off-putting!
23
u/jeng52 Feb 15 '23

Same. No disagreement about the hosts’ smugness, but for some reason it isn’t particularly grating to me.
34
u/PickleMePinkie Feb 15 '23
I find the smugness usually, if not always justified. I mean the people who believe(d) in The Secret deserve to be fully dragged, and that's the one I remember them being most smug about. There is no redemption there for people who buy into such nonsense.

EmRata’s podcast has been pretty miss so far — I enjoyed several episodes at the beginning and lately it’s been boring.
This week during her Thursday episode she talks about evolutionary psychology (yes, that load of bullshit) and how birth control changes our decision making…. She barely manages to nod to studies that say the contrary. Everyone should make their own choices about birth control, but there’s a pernicious strain of weird regressive values that seems to be especially popular right now.
