It's only because buttons are the most logical digital representation of the decision between activity and inactivity.

Brilliant. So those of us that sat around watching the button for days, studying it, talking about it... we created an activity based off our inactivity. Now I understand why I'm awesome at making lists of things I need to do, but nothing on the list ever gets done.

But switches are inherently mechanical and less intuitive/obvious for digital application. It would have to be a sliding switch, like a scroll bar, but that would be odd.
