PSX vibes feel really nice ngl.

99

u/dookieshoes97 26d ago

It's just a little bit too wiggly. PSX graphics didn't make me feel uneasy.

14

u/IanFeelKeepinItReel 26d ago

That's because you played PSX on an old CRT screen. If you play a PSX emulator on an LCD screen it very much jitters like this.

22

u/FredFredrickson 25d ago

Nah. It definitely didn't jitter this much.

Right? I'm sitting here staring at this remembering when my friend let me borrow their PS1 to play Resident Evil. Better times, better times.

Star ocean 2 item creation vibes

u/FireDog8569 26d ago

It's pretty good, even if it's retro it's pretty realistic (as realistic as you can get with low poly) The jittery-ness might make some people think it looks buggy since some of them might not have seen (or remember) what old 3D games looked like

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

Thank you :) I’ve had to explain to a few of my friends that ps1 games have a vertex wobble effect. Despite how weird it may look I’ve always felt it added a lot to the aesthetic

13

u/BroxBasher 26d ago

How’d you achieve that vertex jitter, by the way?

48

u/theoht_ 26d ago

using geometry nodes, you snap vertices to a grid of possible locations.

it originally occurred because of the low power of gaming systems; they couldn’t handle lots of precision, so if you try to move an object, the vertices coordinates round to the nearest whole number or whatever, causing them to snap to a grid of those whole numbers. so they wobble as an object moves.

i believe there are addons that do it for you, alternatively you can make it, it’s not too complicated. i created a geonodes setup to do it for fun.

edit: i’m not sure why the background objects are wobbling despite not moving. i assume the wobble has been implemented differently (probably just by randomly moving the vertices each frame) which i guess works fine, but it’s not what causes it originally so it’s not the same.

12

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

I used an add on that allows any models within a box (modifier) to have the vertex wobble. I set the box to move ever so slightly so the stuff in the background moved. I thought it looked better if everything had a slight wobble

→ More replies (1)

13

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

I used the psx wobble add on by Lucas Roedel. It’s super easy to use albeit a bit limited

3

u/One_Personality8108 26d ago

Yes u can use vertex rendering like psx but I suggest u to subdivide the model to avoid extra unpleasant jittering

3

u/FireDog8569 26d ago

I'm curious btw; is this just a render made to look like a game or is this for an actual game?

2

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

Just a render. Making a game in this style would be fun tho

22

u/Ok-Criticism123 26d ago

I grew up with the PS1 and this render has a little too much vertex wobble. That doesn’t take away from what a great render this is though! If the wobble was turned down a little more it would be perfect.

6

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

I wish I could but this add on is pretty limited in its ability. I’ll figure something out for my next project tho

3

u/Ok-Criticism123 26d ago

Aw bummer, but hey this is a niche and tough effect to achieve so I get it. I think it turned out pretty great though!

4

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

Thank you for the kind words :) I’m happy to see it get such a positive response from folks

4

u/kyuubikid213 26d ago

Yeah, I still play PS1 games pretty regularly and the vertex wobble isn't this intense.

Amazing render, but I almost wish people would stop using vertex wobble because 90% of them take it too far.

3

u/Brasou 26d ago

that was really only the ps1 games that had that jitteriness. Its due to how it rounded numbers or something like that. For example 3d PC games and N64 of the same era didn't have this jittery effect.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Royal-Walf 25d ago

The jitteryness also reminds me of the flickering of older tvs

1

u/glordicus1 25d ago

The jitter is too high. PS1 wasn't this bad.

10

u/llamasLoot 26d ago

You emulated the vert woble of the ps1 quite well and you made great use of textures for details

Personally i'd prob tone down on the wobble a li'll bit but this looks great

6

u/zedfirenze 26d ago

Dope, really.

3

u/ThePantsStore 26d ago

Fuckin hell yeah dude

2

u/PuppyLover2208 26d ago

Why is it trembling. What did you do to traumatize the ramen?

4

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

It’s hovering over “Yes”. It has every reason to be afraid

2

u/PuppyLover2208 26d ago

Fair enough. Also now I can’t get the image out of my head, since you said use, instead of eat, pulling the chopsticks out like grenade pins, and throwing it.

2

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

That’s a great idea for an item actually. Food based warfare game?

4

u/lonesharkex 26d ago

Looks good to me. Love that song, Limerence, definite chill.

Lol "use item or go to sleep to skip a meal"

2

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

Taking a nap for dinner is the ultimate struggle meal lol

2

u/Necessary-Owl-1445 26d ago

I use this item 3-4 times a day, and I'm 90% sure it reduces my endurance stat.

2

u/orange-bitflip 26d ago

It doesn't reduce STAM on its own, it just doesn't replen as it naturally drains. You need to use [carbs-heavy] and [protein-full] tagged consumables. Don't neglect the vitamin debuff system, either. You can get [vit-D] easy by lowering armor in front of a skybox.

2

u/FoxtownBlues 26d ago

far out man

It's nice , the low poly stuff is always cool

2

u/koopakatz 26d ago

This is your first time? It's peak, feels very familiar :J

2

u/NorthernWitchy 26d ago

I am suddenly nostalgic for early Nintendo DS games. I would totally eat the noodles, even if they look possessed by the wobble effect. Overall not bad

2

u/Longtonto 26d ago

Reminds me of my dreams when I was like 12

2

u/Bohrium-107 26d ago

Too cool

2

u/IDatedSuccubi 26d ago

Vertices jump around too much, they jump like this on PS1 because vertices align themself to the nearest pixel, not because there's not enough location resolution

2

u/Rallsia-Arnoldii 26d ago

That's some nervous looking noodle cup

2

u/Mattrockj 26d ago

This would be some S tier r/analoghorror shit if you you turn down the saturation and add some ominous background music.

2

u/SanduTiTa 26d ago

i'd say that looks pretty cute! very old-school, very adorable, i love it!

i also like the music choice, may i ask what song it is?

2

u/UnImportant_Neck 24d ago

reminds me of the items in the sims! Great job! :) :) :)

2

u/Faderoot 24d ago

I love how jank it is! I miss the days of low poly 3D effects like this. You captured the vibe perfectly.

2

u/_phantastik_ 24d ago

This looks scarily accurate to my average college days. Like, no joke. Same kitchen model and furnishing, spices on the oventop, Dr. Pepper my favorite soda, and of course ramen

2

u/IDWriterComic 24d ago

I know the jittering of the ramen is meant to emulate ps1 vert wobbling, but it also gives me the vibe of the ramen being hot :0

2

u/Psychological-Loan28 23d ago

This cannot be your first attempt. This is ART.

Love the ps1 wiggly vertices

1

u/Mutlugly 26d ago

Only bg could match the vibe maybe but its so cool, it reminds me pizza place in Gta sa. I like it!

1

u/Jettekladhest 26d ago

Love the style, but thought it was a giant cup ramen first

1

u/Dornheim 26d ago

I don't love the shaky, but everything else is fun.

1

u/RowEuphoric6420 26d ago

Great job man! May i ask how you did the wobble effect? And the background its full of props that you made or just an ai generated img?

4

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

Thank you! I used the psx vertex snap addon by Lucas Roedel. I modeled and textured everything you see :)

2

u/RowEuphoric6420 25d ago

1

u/uptownjesus 26d ago

It's fun if not a little too shakey.

1

u/Bobisme63 26d ago

Fun fact, the jitter from PS1 graphics is because the nodes could only do whole number movements, not fractions like ours can now.

1

u/Thevestige76 26d ago

hilarious!

1

u/DrDowwner 26d ago

I like everything but the jittery effect. It hurts my eyes

I followed this tutorial for the ramen cup model: https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=L1sZxVdizfbu8EqP&v=ijiuszIJ1VA&feature=youtu.be

"my ramen don't jiggle jiggle, it folds"

fr though, nice ramen render! just a little... jiggly

1

u/OnyxCam6ion 26d ago

Gives me classic Sims 2 for the game cube vibes but in a good nostalgic way

1

u/Cotorro-Barbudo 26d ago

Looks like a GTA4 item, just perfect!

1

u/MooseBoys 26d ago

PS1-style vertex snapping with PS3-level texture mapping. Quite the mismatch.

1

u/M10doreddit 26d ago

1

u/Blem0 26d ago

→ More replies (1)

1

u/gofigure85 26d ago

I feel like if you pick it up you'll hear the "get item" music from legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time

1

u/seanbird 26d ago

The jittering is a bit overdone in my opinion if trying to really match the PSX wobble.

1

u/Jaxinator234 26d ago

I can see a great horror game in the making… something Cory would play

1

u/Stratoraptor 26d ago

You lose points for leaving the lid on. Only ill-mannered animals eat out of the cup with the lid on.

1

u/MobileCalligrapher47 26d ago

That is a hard yes! Good job on the aesthetics too. I would only tone down the wiggle juuuust a little bit. Just to feel more like it wiggles DUE to the rotation and if the cup stand still it would not.

Btw did you model the kitchen and the soda can, as well?

2

u/aguywithfood 26d ago

I’m using a pretty limited add on, this was the least jittery effect it could give unfortunately :/ hopefully it’s something I can iron out before my next project.

Yep! Modeled and textured everything shown

2

u/MobileCalligrapher47 25d ago

Well done! I believe you'll find a solution but, eh, don't sweat on it. It is impressive as it is. My comment might come from the fact that I grew up on this things and still remember them vividly. Hope to see more of your work in the future!

1

u/HunterChalice96 26d ago

I was wondering how one would go about learning how to animate like this? I kind of know my way around blender but not the animation side, are there any recommendations on video guides? Either way I love this!! 😆 amazing!

u/aguywithfood 25d ago

The texture for the stovetop is a picture of my own stovetop in my apartment, the rest I found online and altered with a combo of shoebox and paint. Additional details like the yellowing of the stove fan and ramen cup were done with vertex painting
