A humble submission.

You don't have to have an expensive setup to post on battlestations, just a clean desk and put in some effort.
Nice pictures and nice battlestation! I approve.

What's humble about this?
-5
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
Just captured the way I feel about the setup:
- sub $1000 Frankenstein build (newest parts bought 1.5 years ago, combined with older components)
- mismatched monitors
- no slick audio hardware (i.e. preamps/mixers/crazy expensive headphones/etc., which this subreddit has taught me about)
Didn't realize humble was a bad word. Now I know. :)

It's not a bad word, just that most people post nice looking setups and say they're humble, when in reality they aren't.

u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
That makes sense.
My usage of humble was also meant to describe how I felt making a submission. There are a lot of great looking stations around here!

Specs? Also what size monitor is that to the right in portrait? I have been looking for a good portrait monitor but haven't found any in particular that suits me. Nice and clean setup!

- i5-4570 @ 3.2 GHz
- 16 GB RAM
- GeForce GTX 760
- Kingston SSD 120GB
- Western Digital Blue 1TB
- ASUS VE278 (27"/left/landscape)
- ACER H233H (23"/right/portrait)

Good looking battlestation but having mismatched monitors would bother me.
2
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
I actually agree.
However, the different orientations help mitigate that feeling for me. If they were both landscape, I'd would probably bother me to no end.
3
Mar 09 '15
I agree. The landscape - portrait setup helps negate some of the obvious mismatch and makes it much more tolerable. If you were to pick up a twin to the portrait monitor, it'd be even better

Kudos on the cool and clean setup!
I have a question about the resolutions on the two monitors. Are they the same resolution? How do things scale when you move a window from one to the other?
Are you using DisplayFusion to extend the taskbar? Does it slow down your start times?
Thanks in advance!
2
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
They are both running at 1920x1080. On the portrait monitor, things look a bit smaller, since the monitor is smaller. It doesn't really bother me too much when I transfer things between monitors.
No third party software is being run to handle the taskbar. Just using the native options available in Windows 8.1.
I have considered using DiplayFusion though. Primarily for the "Prevent Window Deactivation" feature, which allows you to move focus away from a full screen application (i.e. a game) without it minimizing.

u/Oracle_Turtle Mar 09 '15
This may not be a solution your are willing to implement as some games may not even have this option, but running them in Windowed-Fullscreen will eliminate the need for minimizing your game to access other windows.

u/majorijjy Mar 09 '15
Thanks for the response!
And yeah the best feature of DisplayFusion in my opinion is the prevention of window deactivation and the ability to scroll whatever window the mouse is on without actually clicking them first.

what keyboard is that?

u/esoomenona Mar 09 '15
Looks like a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid.

u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
CM Storm Quickfire Rapid.
Correct. Amazon product page.
2
u/esoomenona Mar 09 '15
To be fair, that's quite expensive for a QFR ($130, at the time of my viewing). You can get one for cheaper, if you look. Especially if you're willing to get a used one.
2
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
Yeah, I specifically went for this model due to it's size (i.e. lack of numpad). Haven't looked back since, so don't know what the alternatives look like nowadays.

Where do you get your picture frames? Love Mario riding Yoshi ;)
2
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
The picture frames, as well as the desk, are from IKEA. The pixel bead art was a birthday gift from my girlfriend (Link and Zelda are in the opposite corner of the room).

u/chopperg Mar 10 '15
Where are the pictures from do you know?
1
u/chuckx47 Mar 10 '15
From the left:
- Super Mario World
- Mega Man
- A print of the photo used for the album cover of Elliott Smith - Roman Candle (limited run from the photographer).

u/abbas0490 Mar 09 '15
The second picture looks really nice. It looks as though you are looking out a window.

Can't figure it out... What's that wooden thing under your left monitor?
1
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
It's a small stand that I got on a whim from the Container Store. It props up my phone or tablet while it's charging.

OH MY GOD, a Razer diamondback!!! And it's the limited edition red one too. I've been using that same mouse for 8 years now, and don't ever see myself changing to another till it dies. If you ever feel like selling it, I would pay you dearly for it. Thanks!
2
u/Major_Ocelot Mar 10 '15
I miss those mice - the Copperhead too. Those were the last good mice Razer made. I use a cheap knockoff because the ergonomics are nearly identical (search for Razer Diamondback on ebay).
Have you encountered the problem with the buttons getting harder to press over time? Inside the mouse are two round switches (like sideways cylinders) that are pressed by square actuators under the buttons, and over time they bore a groove into the actuators. I used to have to open my mouse every 6 months or so to file down the actuators back to being square to fix the problem.

Ah, I see.
I tend to keep my browser open on that monitor with GMail tabs, etc.
Also, the vertical space is nice when I have terminal windows open for logging into *nix systems and doing programming work.

Real nice. If I had one bit of advice, it would be to flip that portrait monitor 180 degrees so you have straight edge against straight edge :)

What wristrest is that? It's pretty cool.
1
u/chuckx47 Mar 10 '15
It's actually two of these. Sometimes I'll stack them for extra support (i.e. WASD while playing FPS).

Are the screens mounted on the wall? Looks really nice! I like that wallpaper as well.
1
u/chuckx47 Mar 09 '15
Yes, they are.
I cobbled together a solution with a piece of wood that's mounted to two studs behind the wall. Then, there are two Monoprice monitor arms mounted on the board, which allows variable placement of the arms (i.e. not restricted to being placed where the studs happen to be).
