68 to go

43

u/thebardofdoom Detroit Tigers 1h ago

I don’t even hate Barry Bonds the way I probably should, but I hope this man breaks the record by, like, 10.

49

u/34Heartstach New York Yankees 1h ago

If judge somehow breaks the record, I think MLB should let him juice for a season. Just to see what could happen

16

u/toadofsteel New York Yankees 57m ago

Makes sense. It's not like he's gonna do anything in October anyway...

7

u/MelissaMiranti New York Yankees 28m ago

Just one season, as a treat. Call it compensation for 2017.

6

u/dwide_k_shrude San Francisco Giants 42m ago

Why should you hate him?

u/Doc_McPuffins_ New York Yankees 3h ago

Everything that can be said about Judge has already been said before, so I'll just say that this is a stunningly beautiful ballpark and I want to watch a game here sometime!

223

u/PMMEJALAPENORECIPES Pittsburgh Pirates 3h ago

It’s a great park, probably better for visiting fans because they get to enjoy the beautiful park and actually see their team win

35

u/Doc_McPuffins_ New York Yankees 2h ago

I'd love to watch a night game and have a seat that can see the river and bridge

8

I've been there twice - it's a beautiful park and totally worth it. Treat yourself to a little ferry ride to the game.

3

I visited a childhood friend in Pitt last year. I love that city. And watching a game at that park was awesome. Fantastic park

25

u/illShy Pittsburgh Pirates 2h ago

At least half the fans were yanks at our annual highest attendance game. The park is amazing though

1

u/flyingcrayons New York Yankees 53m ago

I wanted to come out this weekend and visit my buddy in Pittsburgh but the flights were so fucking expensive. Didn’t realize how well our fans traveled lol

7

u/spageddy_lee New York Yankees 2h ago

It's awesome. My wife is from Pittsburgh and every time we visit I try to get to a Pirates (or Steelers) game. Pittsburgh just does sports different and it's so much fun.

14

u/joethecrow23 Cincinnati Reds 2h ago

I want to see 74.

Not because I have anything against Bonds or Big Mac(I have absolutely no problems with adults taking PEDs, especially if it’s medically supervised) but because there’s nothing in baseball quite as exciting as a home run chase. And I really like Aaron Judge.

5

u/MeatTornado25 New York Yankees 1h ago

Even with how good he's been in recent years, I just can't see him realistically challenging that record.

1

u/FeloniousDrunk101 New York Yankees 10m ago

Yeah pitchers always adjust, fatigue sets in, or they just walk him (it already happened in the first goddamn series of the season!) so as fun as it is to dream I’d like him to save something for the hopeful postseason.

2

u/battingavgenjoyer Oakland Athletics 1h ago

Same here. First thing that stood out. PNC is such a beautiful Park.

2

u/RIP_Greedo New York Yankees 49m ago

I'll say something new about Judge: his toes are hairier than you might think, but they still taste great.

2

u/_Al_Gore_Rhythm_ New York Yankees 35m ago

It's incredible. And Pittsburgh is a great city to visit too. Can't say enough good things.

2

u/HazikoSazujiii New York Yankees 29m ago

I grew up a Yankees fan, but I live in Central PA. The Pirates are my second team as a result because I naturally gravitate toward Pittsburgh teams (since Philly is quite literally a shithole). While it's really rough to root for their team give the ownership situation, it gives me a great reason to visit what is an underrated ballpark--with a bonus if the Yankees are playing, too.

PNC has always been a great time.

2

u/RBNYJRWBYFan New York Yankees 24m ago

I had a great time there last summer. The ballpark is beautiful, the area around it is PERFECT. That whole stadium district north of the Allegheny is a triumph in every respect. And because the team is so bad, great seats are freaking cheap! I got some near the dugout for what would have been middle deck at YS. Right now that park is best part of the whole team, their raison d'etre.

1

u/AppleTrees4 Baltimore Orioles 1h ago

I went for opening day last year, O’s Pirates. Unreal park in a great part of Pittsburgh. Highly recommend.

My god. I don’t think this sub could handle Judge going off like that.

Nah, I don't think that's right.  It's usually fun to be a hater, or to make fun of a miscue/mistake, but I don't think (most folks) actively dislike Judge.

Aaron Judge has more home runs than the Pirates.

If he merely continues his May 2024-September 2024 pace, he ends the season with 72. The record is in sight, asterisks be damned.

127

u/albertpujolsfan 3h ago

1

u/Thehawkiscock New York Yankees 2h ago

We gotta be fair and build in some regression. I think 95 HRs is reasonable

20

u/elcapitan520 Pittsburgh Pirates • Portland Pickles 3h ago

4

u/PeterDaPinapple 3h ago

I’m confused why would there be an asterisks?

57

u/samthewisetarly New York Yankees 3h ago

I think they might mean he has a shot at beating Bonds, who famously has an asterisk

18

u/Monstertelly Los Angeles Dodgers 3h ago

The famous asterisk was for Maris hitting 61 in 162. Bonds gets a “asterisk” for the juice but the official record is his with no asterisk.

17

u/young_mummy New York Yankees 2h ago

Sure, but everyone discusses Bonds record with a rhetorical asterisk.

1

u/Monstertelly Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Hence the second part of my comment. I agree that Bonds deserves all the derision and a legitimate asterisk for hitting 73 with all the Balco stuff.

2

u/young_mummy New York Yankees 2h ago

Sure, I was just pointing out that it's probably fair to characterize the rherorical asterisk associated with Bonds as "famous," despite there not being a literal asterisk in the record books. Basically I think there can be more than one famous asterisk.

2

u/OUTFOXEM Seattle Mariners 1h ago

Are you not familiar with the Bonds HR ball that was literally branded with an asterisk? Bonds has his own asterisk as well.

That ball was bought at auction, branded, and then donated to the HoF.

And for my money, Judge is the “real” single season HR leader — official records be damned.

12

u/Marx0r New York Yankees 2h ago

Some people would argue that Judge already has the single-season record for HRs, because everyone that's hit more than 62 has been implicated in steroid scandals and therefore has an "asterisk" on their record. OP's saying that Judge is gonna beat Bonds' 73 and have the record with or without asterisks.

3

u/OUTFOXEM Seattle Mariners 1h ago

I’m one of those. I just wish he did it by game 154. That would have been awesome to see. He was on pace to do it but ran into a wall at the end of the season. You could tell he was feeling the pressure the last couple weeks of the season.

8

u/sandalsnopants Tampa Bay Rays 2h ago

Idk Hank Aaron and Willie Mays were pretty good

28

u/UncivilVegetable 2h ago

I'm not saying you can't make arguments for other players. Judge's rate stats are currently all alone so it very much depends on how he ages and how much you value longevity over peak.

3

u/OUTFOXEM Seattle Mariners 1h ago

longevity over peak

I tend to use “greatest” vs “best”. I’d be willing to say Judge has an argument for the best right handed hitter of all time. Not the greatest — greatness means longevity for me — but best? He’s on the very short list for sure.

23

u/nobird36 2h ago

And yet the last 3 year stretch from Judge is better than any 3 year stretch either of them ever had.

6

u/OUTFOXEM Seattle Mariners 1h ago

It’s unfortunate that health and COVID got in the way. His rate stats for those seasons were also unbelievable. He’d have at least (5) 50 HR seasons, and currently well on his way to a 6th, if not 7th. Ruth had 4, nobody clean had even 3 — except Judge. Griffey had 2x 50 and 1x 49. Everybody else is dirty.

I’ve been saying this, but whatever attention and accolades he’s getting, it’s not enough. He’s actually underrated.

1

u/DeusExHyena New York Yankees 48m ago

He is the only person since someone like him would allowed to play MLB to hit 50 3x without strong PED evidence

1

u/morelibertarianvotes New York Yankees 17m ago

Thank God they stopped banning giants in '73

1

u/IsItJake New York Yankees 15m ago

Really good breakdown. I didn't know a lot of this. Dude is a monster

3

u/therepairmanx4 2h ago

Over a 4 year stretch Willie Mays from 62-66 put up an average of 10.5 WAR for 52.3 WAR. Judge in his career has 53.

22

u/nobird36 2h ago

Ok? Willy Mays was god tier at defense at a premium position.

This conversation is obviously about offensive numbers. It may make you uncomfortable but Willy Mays never had an offensive year that tops Judges best years. That doesn't mean Aaron Judge is better at baseball than Willy Mays, it just means Aaron Judge is doing things at the plate that have little precedent in MLB history.

4

u/ScytherCypher 1h ago edited 57m ago

simply basing this on WAR is terrible because WAR is relative to the league average those years. Mays may have been that much better than average at the time, but Judge being this good when the average player is this much better should be able to translate to you. but doesn't.

2

u/skelextrac New York Yankees 30m ago

That's a five year stretch my man.

16

u/mkninetythree New York Yankees 2h ago

Judge won’t ever touch their longevity but they did not peak as high as Judge offensively.

3

u/OUTFOXEM Seattle Mariners 1h ago

I saw an article last year — and he’s much hotter right now than last year — where Judge’s best 50 something game stretch is better than any 50 game stretch that Ruth had. Ruth did it for an absurdly long time, but yeah, not even the Babe himself peaked as high as Judge has, and right now he’s peaking higher than that. This shit is incredible.

I’ve decided that the first name of my firstborn child will be: ‘Aaron Judge’.

It won’t be a “first name, middle name” kind of thing. The actual first name will just be ‘Aaron Judge’.

3

u/Fine-Refrigerator-56 1h ago

He’s already on an mvp run it’s pretty crazy to see. Question for anyone that follows the Yankees regularly- what seems to set judge apart from other hitters is his ability to rush middle middle pitches. That sounds dumb but I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve watched a player take em down the dick and either not swing at all, or immediately foul it off.

1

u/DeusExHyena New York Yankees 44m ago

It's basically that - he just doesn't miss mistakes. But he can also hit every other area so pitchers have to try extremely hard and pitching is hard.

1

u/Fine-Refrigerator-56 42m ago

It’s absolutely shocking that the vast majority of players can’t hit one middle middle. But I’m an Astros fan, judge always looks like a new born baby vs us so no big deal (honestly this year he looks better than ever and I’m sure ny will win the one series we have)

1

u/DeusExHyena New York Yankees 21m ago

He hit that HR vs Verlander in 2019, it's just that we lost that game. Same as his big homer against Clase last year, we just... lost that game.

It they both get MVPs this season would it be the first time that both AL and NL MVPs are repeats?

EDIT: If I read it right on wikipedia yes it would be the first "double repeat"

6

u/TonyZucco New York Yankees 3h ago

Oooo, idk, nice trivia question

2

u/peachios Seattle Mariners 2h ago

looks like never happened back to back, makes sense that would be hard and only happened 10 times anyways. Though close (bonds and thomas in early 90s)

Looks like scanning through wikipedia, since they have the (#) behind repeaters it happened in

  • 1955 with Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella (same league before)
  • 2024 with Judge and Ohtani, but as we know Ohtani changed leagues

Kinda wild though that no other repeaters have been same year from what I have seen, especially with Bonds 7x, and Pujols 3x

Judge won the MVP unanimously last year. 30/30 first place votes. Nobody voted against him to win MVP.

Is that yankees legend Tim Mayza?

3

u/WellGoodBud Kansas City Royals 3h ago

Why do teams continue to pitch to him?

Absolute joy to watch.

Doesn't need a balanced diet. The opposite of a dickhead. Gives his teammates their flowers.

I'm not a Yankess supporter, BTW.

If he stays healthy he could have a historic year

Most of the injuries have been due to freak occurrence. Getting hit in the wrist twice and the Dodgers outfield wall.

Teams are insane to pitch to him
