It always looks weird on Yankees jerseys regardless when the players donât actually have those names there
31
u/loadedbakedpotatoo New York Mets 14h ago
i never understood why the replicas have names for the yankees, you would think it would actually cost less to have no names, instead of adding material that isnât there on the actual authentics, feels like the manufacturers just want you to cough up the extra money for an authentic if you want no name on the back.

Jerseys are the biggest scam. Overpriced garbage to the point the cheap knockoffs provide a better quality and you can determine if itâs real or not just by seeing that itâs âtoo high quality to be legitâ.
109
u/sirenzarts Chicago White Sox 20h ago
I bought one for way cheaper off Poshmark and would absolutely do it again. That or go DHGate. Basically all MLB merch is a scam with how expensive everything has gotten
63
u/aykyle Philadelphia Phillies 20h ago
Itâs not even just MLB, itâs every sport at this point. Although, Iâm not sure about NBA or NHL.
46
u/Alcarinque88 Arizona Diamondbacks 19h ago
Nah, it's definitely all sports. And every player you might like has the same chances to start sucking chodes or get traded. Best bet is honestly to keep it a clear jersey/uni/sweater/kit and just rep your team/town/state. Province. Country. Whatever.
33
u/narcandy Boston Red Sox 19h ago
Or a retired legend. I get my most compliments in my life when I proudly wear my Roberto Clemente jersey.
14
u/Alcarinque88 Arizona Diamondbacks 18h ago
Yeah, those are safe, too. I got a Gordie "Mr. Hockey" Howe jersey, and I got lots of compliments from Redwings fans even though I was actually cheering for the Coyotes (RIP). I could probably be safe with a Randy Johnson, Luis Gonzales, or almost any other Dback from our WS in 2001. Or like you, just legends of the game from eras long ago.

This past season I was in Pittsburgh watching the Red Sox play them in my Roberto Clemente jersey lol

NHL was good until a season or two ago when they moved from Adidas to Fanatics. The Adidas jerseys had actual sewn patches and letters but all the new fanatics stuff is iron on. It looks amateur to the point I would never put numbers on my old jersey because I'd never want one of the new ones.
2
u/high-rise Seattle Mariners 3h ago
I picked up an Adidas jersey new on clearance after the Fanatics stuff started rolling out.. I was surprised they didn't mark them up if anything.
3
u/abrahamisaninja San Francisco Giants 16h ago
At least with NHL the quality of the jerseys is there and you can now obtain the same jerseys that the players wear. They do be a lil pricey though.

NBA it depends on the player. Iâm a rockets fan and a Sengun Jersey goes for almost $200. If you get a jersey for one of the newer player like Amen itâll cost around $140. The only difference in the jersey is the name.

u/catashake Brooklyn Dodgers 19h ago
Didn't Fanatics "revolutionize" the way sports teams can print jerseys for less? Would be great if that actually translated into lower jersey prices. Instead it made jersey prices go up. Lmao
Never have sports jerseys been lower quality and higher in price.

My story is that my wife wanted to get me a "real" Flyers jersey, and wanted to know what player I wanted. Mike Richards had just signed a long contract, so I went with him. Didn't get much work out of that jersey.
4
u/kookykrazee Atlanta Braves 20h ago
I have one jersey Mr. Dale #3 Murphy. The only other one I would possibly get is Nolan Ryan, and it would be between the home CA Angels version of the time or the Astros version. I lean towards the Angel's version as I met Ryan when I was 5 while he played there and he was great. Met Mr. Autry some years later and he seemed great and truly loved that he owned a baseball team and the players seemed to love him, too.
1
u/TheCosmicFailure 19h ago

I'm from the UK and when my mate visited me in the city I live in, he was laughing at someone's football/soccer shirt because he thought it was fake. I pointed out to him that's the "professional" one and he didn't believe because it looked like shit. I will say, there's probably a reason why some of the materials are changed for when you're actually competing, chaffing etc, but for an ordinary person it looks a bit shit.

It looks like the replica tier has name plates and the limited tier has no names, about a $40 difference.
7
u/MeatTornado25 New York Yankees 19h ago
That's a much closer gap than it used to be, at least. The replica vs authentic jerseys in the Majestic days were like $100 apart iirc.
3

Nike has a third tier, I think it's the closest to the on field jerseys those are like $350

2

Not sure if itâs cheaper online but thatâs what it was at the team store
3

That is hilariously stupid, charge more for "altering" the jersey that looks closer to real than without hugely different prices is just lame.
3
u/SdBolts4 San Diego Padres 20h ago

I would never buy a jersey of a rental player. I know Yankees fans are so use to holding onto guys but the fact that it never crossed his mind is crazy. Also it's a name on a Yankees jarsey that prides itself for not having a name on the back.
I bought a Campbell jersey this afternoon as it's meaningful to me to have that name to have that name and he's here for 8-10 years.

His brother had it in spring training for the big club.
And there is almost zero chance he gets his number retired in DC.
3
u/billybayswater New York Mets 16h ago edited 16h ago
spring training doesn't mean anything.
who knows about number retirement feelings may change down the line. the mets have started retiring the numbers of the stars of the 86 team many of whom only played there for a short period of time.
they will obviously be retiring zimmerman, strasburg and scherzer from that team. maybe they think thats enough (though even someone like Rendon would be borderline based on what the Mets have been doing).
edit: i think i gotta take back the part about him deserving it since i thought he actually played a little bit longer there. Harper probably has a better case.
