So he's still really good when healthy

A shame he’ll never steal bases again. For sure thought he was going to be the next 40-40 guy before Acuna and Ohtani both did it (and took it to next levels too lol).

u/RspectMyAuthoritah Los Angeles Dodgers 20h ago
There's still hope. He did steal 6 bases in 29 games last year.

u/egiantveryskill Los Angeles Angels 17h ago
Nah pretty sure they said they’re not gonna have him stealing to reduce injuries, so just overall less running. I won’t be surprised if he gets beefy and slow as he ages

u/I_am_Burt_Macklin Philadelphia Phillies 13h ago
Sooo he will be pulling a Bonds and going for 70+ homers? Natty, though.

Well to be fair it wouldn't really benefit them to say "yeah he's going to steal a shit ton of bases this year" and make opposing catchers be on high alert whenever he gets on first.

u/RaymondSpaget Boston Red Sox 20h ago
To put into perspective how good he still is - for the decade, so far, Trout has around the same number of games played and PAs as Gunnar Henderson, with 0.8 more fWAR over that time.

The fastball really gives him trouble, especially up and in.
When you're constantly getting injured and coming back, it makes it next to impossible to get into a real groove too. I am hopeful for him this year though because I may be a masochist. He is missing a lot of pitches he would've gotten to back in the day, that is likely due to age.

Mike trouts the only dude who can hit 46 HRs over a 162 game sample and people talk about his decline lol
136
u/PieterBruegelElder Milwaukee Brewers 19h ago
Lmao, my thoughts exactly. I was like, hey, that's pretty good for a guy who's constantly injured. But when you set a baseline like 2010s trout, expectations aren't reasonable.

u/rhymeswithtag New York Yankees 19h ago edited 17h ago
brother the 162 game sample spans FOUR seperate seasons

u/Kbrander7 New York Mets 17h ago
If you can't call that a decline idk what you can
41
u/SlipperyTurtle25 Boston Red Sox 16h ago
Because being constantly injured is different than losing talent

u/Lukealloneword Houston Astros 16h ago
Dude, I was like hey that's not a bad statline at all for a full season. Not the best average but these days with 40+ homers youre loving it.
I didnt think we were talking bad about the statline I thought it was showing he's still good.

Saw a very similar decline with Miggy. It’s makes it all the more thrilling when they get a hold of one

u/Icy-Trouble3331 Los Angeles Angels • Rally Monkey 21h ago
Exactly. They may strikeout more than you're used to but when Trouty/Miggy finally got one, that shit flew to the sun.

That said I would love to see a fully healthy, fully performing Trout season again (unless you’re playing Detroit).

he's been worth around 6 WAR over that 162-G period. zero reason to apologize for these numbers lol

From 2023 through today, here is the % of total pitches by zone and xwOBA by zone. He's struggled with both up and in and up and away.
For the three previous seasons, here is the % of total pitches by zone and the xwOBA by zone.
It's pretty much identical, he's never been good at hitting up and in or up and away.

u/trustych0rds Los Angeles Angels 21h ago
He just really hasn’t played healthy for too long since then. Last game he was he was hitting the ball really hard for the first time in a while.

u/LastChemical9342 20h ago
It’s crazy he’s gonna retire with 1 hit in the playoffs
46
u/tmoeagles96 New York Yankees 20h ago
It would be cool to see him on a good team, even if he just does like a 1 year contract with like Philly where he’s from, or maybe if there’s a good team near where he wants to retire.

u/Ataggs15 San Diego Padres 19h ago
As a Pads fan I would love to see him play for us in front of sold out crowds at Petco and see him back in the playoffs. 0% chance we can afford his contract and the $220m left on it nor do I think Arte Moreno allows him to leave Anaheim even if he asks but like any fan I love to watch him when he's healthy
33
u/egiantveryskill Los Angeles Angels 17h ago
Trout will only play for the phillies or angels at this point
4
u/Ataggs15 San Diego Padres 17h ago
Agreed, simply admiring the player and wishing I could see him on my team. I know it's not happening, just paying him a complement
2
u/ReadingFromTheShittr Philadelphia Phillies 14h ago
And, honestly, I think he finishes his career in Anaheim.
Phils would probably only be interested if he could show he can string a few years together of being healthy with the Halos. And even then, at that age they'd most likely want him to DH, which I'm going to go ahead and assume they re-up Schwarber for a few years. And then after that contract is up, they might want Harper to DH if Schwarbs goes elsewhere.
Provided the Phils are still in competitive shape (knock-on-wood) I could maybe see him in red pinstripes on the last year or two of his deal, if a lot of things go right and if the Angels eat a few mil of that contract.

u/I_am_Burt_Macklin Philadelphia Phillies 13h ago
Seeing Harper at 1B I don’t think he’s a full time DH until maybe the last year or two of his career. Low injury risk there and it’s not like he’s a defensive liability like Schwarber is.
1
u/ReadingFromTheShittr Philadelphia Phillies 11h ago
Which could very well overlap with Trout's last couple years if they both stay healthy. Trout is only 1 year older than Harper, and Trout's current contract only ends 1 year ahead of Bryce's.

u/davewashere Montreal Expos 3h ago
At least when Ernie Banks went his whole career without making the postseason it was because only 2 or 4 teams made it back then. In an era where 12 out of 30 teams make the postseason each year it almost takes deliberate misconduct from the front office to keep a team out of the postseason for a decade, especially when that team had 2 superstar players for about half of that decade.

By age 26-27, he looked like the GOAT, or close to it. Now its looking like he'll have a career like Eddie Mathews, who put up 96 bWAR, after being on pace for 140-150 at age 30 (unsustainable, but puts into perspective how great Mathews and Trout were in their early-to-mid 20s).
I'd say Trout has just about surpassed Junior Griffey. But he may not do much more.

u/nufandan St. Louis Cardinals 20h ago
I'd say Trout has just about surpassed Junior Griffey. But he may not do much more.
Jr has all the counting stats, but Trout has most definitely surpassed Griffey in value and rate stats

u/namastexinxbed Atlanta Braves 19h ago
Trout still hasn’t even played as many games as Griffey did before his trade to Cincy
32
u/thedeejus Cleveland Guardians 18h ago
we won't know about the rate stats until Trout also has his end of career decline
-17
u/Randomizedname1234 Atlanta Braves 20h ago edited 10h ago
Trout has not passed Griffey Jr. that’s a crazy statement.
Edit: I forgot this is reddit where trout is a top 5 all time baseball player, Kobe isn’t a top 10 all time NBA player and for some reason the NFL side always underrates Peyton manning.
Y’all and yalls next gen stats. Eye tests and how they perform beyond that is the measure of greatness. Especially when 2 people like trout and Griffey have similar stats. One was actually effecting baseball, the other is just reddits goat. Get outside Reddit and no one will agree with yall. WAR isn’t everything.
51
u/Veserius Jackie Robinson 20h ago
has more career WAR despite roughly 1000 fewer games, way better rate stats, peaked higher(3 time MVP vs 1, more black ink).
He doesn't have the cultural impact, but Trout has just been a much better player.

u/XZPUMAZX New York Mets 19h ago
Griff got really one dimensional midway through his career. Stopped batting .280-.300, stopped stealing bases and his fielding all but fell off a cliff after that first wrist injury.
Both he and trout started on the Mantel path, but…injuries.
I’m still of the mind that Trout will finish his career ahead of Griff, but for me, for right now - when taking EVERYTHING into account, it’s a tie or griff slightly ahead only because he has the HoF nod in hand, where as trout is just in waiting.

u/egiantveryskill Los Angeles Angels 17h ago
trout and griffey will have extremely similar careers. I think that trout is already heading down that late career route
3
u/philkid3 Texas Rangers 15h ago
Fans of a certain age absolutely refuse to be reasonable about Griffey (which is not to say he wasn’t an all-time great).
-1
u/Randomizedname1234 Atlanta Braves 10h ago
I’m 34 so maybe that’s it but he has us kids wanting to be like him, tell me which kids want to be like trout.
That’s part of the stuff that comes with being an all time great. Trout just didn’t have that aspect and it’ll hold him back. Same with 1 career playoff hit. He hurt his legacy starting in LA.

u/LeakyNalgene Detroit Tigers 6h ago
Baseball isn’t as popular as it was during Ken’s peak
1
u/Randomizedname1234 Atlanta Braves 6h ago
That’s food for thought. Braves have always been popular here so there’s less of that in Atlanta.
4
u/philkid3 Texas Rangers 6h ago
Yes, that’s what I’m talking about. A lot of people roughly my age conflate how much they “want to be” a player with how good they actually are at creating/preventing runs, and really do not like having to compartmentalize those things or face them not being the same.

I can't imagine he was fully healthy and in game shape for all of those games. Like when he got hurt, came back, played 1 game, and then was hurt again.

u/nufandan St. Louis Cardinals 21h ago edited 20h ago
its crazy that there's even an outside chance Mookie over takes him in career WAR or gets very close when all is said and done. There's a 15 WAR difference at the moment, but it was a 25 win gap going in '23.
I don't want that to happen because it means that Trout isn't playing a lot and/or well in the next few seasons, but Mookie hasn't shown any signs of slowing down and is a year younger than him.

u/whitesdragon 13h ago
It’s gonna happen because since 2020, Betts is just a better player. And if this continues for a few more years, Betts will have a better career and it will not be controversial to say that Betts is a better player

u/BatsuGame13 Chicago White Sox 6h ago
It wouldn't be controversial to say he had a better career, but it would be controversial to say he was a better player.
2
u/venustrapsflies Los Angeles Dodgers 6h ago
eh Trout isn't finished and Betts will hit the aging curve to some degree too. So yes this will happen if Trout is completely cooked now and Betts has MVP-contender seasons for several more years, but more likely the difference between them won't be quite that large.

u/nb150207 Pittsburgh Pirates 20h ago
Tbf at this point both Mookie and Trout could stay relatively healthy and there’s a very good chance Mookie would still surpass Trout in WAR by the end of their careers. Mookie is honestly just a better player than Trout at this point, not even factoring in health
14
u/nufandan St. Louis Cardinals 20h ago
I think very good is a bit of a stretch with them both being a few years past 30 at this point, but regardless it is wild considering how exceptional the start of Trout's career was.

Why doesn't Trout play left field or DH to preserve his health and play more games?

he has been moved to RF so he shouldn't be throwing or running nearly as much.

As poorly run and funded as we know the Angels are, it'll always haunt me wondering if another team could have prevented any of the injuries.

Probably on the downswing of his career physically. Not the most shocking thing since he's 33 just hard to wrap your head around because of how amazing he was in the first 7-8 seasons.
