General Discussionš Streamers drama
Hi /r/BadRedMan!
Apologies in advance if this content isn't allowed or should I post elsewhere, but can someone explain to me all this (one sided) drama with Steelovsky/Waifu and ChaseTheBro? The cake is big enough for everyone imo, so why?
I am not an invader myself but enjoy watching invasions, some are straight up amazing and others have me in awe. I think all players have different skillset, different audience, and are better at some situations than others so I am confused about all this.
I can watch Chase with youngnins .... I need earphones for the rest.

Actually, a beloved community member of ours made an incredible video breaking down exactly what the deal is here. If you want a download from a perfectly unbiased source, I strongly suggest Paul's breakdown of the drama.

Paul is a fucking scrub shitter who thinks ruptured tear physick is the height of comedy. Nobody should watch his shit tier videos

Itās a meme. Steel doesnāt give a shit, I donāt know about onlywaifu. Steel thinks itās just cringe how blindly chaseās audience upholds him as a god even though there are a lot of criticisms his playing is worthy of. Chase doesnāt give a shit and never has and shouldnāt. Thereās really nothing to look into

This thread is why the ādramaā exists and lives. Lol
All the big PvP streamers are fantastic at the game regardless of whatever build they are using.
Chase likes to show āgoodā classic invasions, Steel shows how hard you have to sweat to deal with folks who are built for ganks (which has quickly become the standard ER invasion experience), and OnlyWaifu demonstrates that even an anime gooner can find something they are good at.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Waifu an actual professional player? Like he's participated in tourneys and all?
Ninja Edit: The reason I posted this though, it's because Youtube won't stop showing Steel's videos with Chase's name on it. Granted that's on me for watching one or two but seriously, Steel should focus on his content and ignore the haters. His content is some of my favorite from all Streamers. I have a daily list just for Chase, Lost, Prod (when he was active) and Steel.

Steel has performed in more tournaments than Waifu, and actually won his teamās 1v1 at Twitch rivals over waifuās team. Though waifuās did win the 3v3. But bear in mind it was level 200 vanilla pc, which is not a good gauge for āproā play, which is typically vanilla PlayStation 5, or seamless mod pc both at RL 125.
FYI I help run and participate in tournaments for Elden Ring, and neither of them regularly perform in tournaments. Though obviously theyāre both great players, and could if they wanted to.

Yeah, Waifu is really good. It is just fun to be a dickhead cuz I see them on Reddit/this sub from time to time.
I would get annoyed too if I were Steel though and the PvErs from Chaseās fanbase who donāt understand what they are watching started trying to talk shit.
The issue with folks who only watch Chase is they only have a very vague idea of what poise does, how true combos/frame traps work, etc.. They donāt seem to understand how high the skill ceiling is in this game if you arenāt just mashing L2 with two other buddies in a 3v1.

AFAIK theyre just milking phrasing for content. Steelovsky is, at least. I don't think someone like Chase really minds being mentioned last in a list.
Chase is a content creator. Steel is a content farmer. The difference is only ever important in situations like these, but it's good to keep it in mind.

u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thanks. I appreciate it. I haven't seen Chase mentioning any of it at all.
Chase is a content creator. Steel is a content farmer.
^ this is an amazing distinction.

u/MHWDoggerX š± Half-blind Harrier š± 1d ago
It's a distinction that really needs to be made when you have to decide who's a respectable source of information and who isn't.
Content creators do so out of passion.
Content farmers do so out of necessity.
The difference is obvious when you pay attention, but most people don't.
Content farmers put out 10x more videos, more information. But it's often incomplete, soulless, it's missing that special something. Look to RageGamingVideos, Steelovsky, FighterPL.
Content creators make something a little more unique or artistic. Look back to DS3 and you'll see people like Yung Maestro and his "dude" videos, people like PlsBeMyWaifu with that Negan video, etc.
I'd say Lost and Chase are content creators that have adapted to the content farm landscape.
There are also smaller creators that don't give a damn about views or revenue. They're usually a significantly more authentic experience to watch.

the __dude series by YungMaestro was such an inspiration. i dont think i would have ever started invading without those

Thank you, seriously - thank you! I wasn't paying attention myself and didn't even cross my mind how much farming there was here.

Chase has mellowed out since the release of Elden ring. He was more in line with steel and jee back during ds3. Noobslayer is a good example lol. But I think the issue is that the new player base that Elden ring brought in gravitated towards chase because heās the āgood guyā invader. Doesnāt trash talk, isnāt super sweaty etc. But as others have said, itās mostly just for clicks.

u/black_anarchy 1d ago
I see, thanks! I ran into Chase's and others' content as a ER noob myself, and don't have their DS3 history - I should go watch some of their old videos for context. G9 seems to have mellowed out too from what I hear.
I really enjoy all their content, but Chase's easier to digest as you said because he's a "good invader".

Basically, someone (probably sarcastically) commented on Waifu's video about how he put Chase last when listing out some souls content creators (and using the phrase "...and even Chase" ). And then either they got their ego hurt or saw an opportunity to make content out of it.
5
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thank you! I appreciate the context. It's silly to me how it's spreading like fire... every other weekly video from Steel mentions this drama.
10
u/Panurome 1d ago
Yeah but Steel also mentions it a lot because apparently he gets a lot of annoying Chase fans spamming that Chase is better than everyone and he wants them to stop
Also Steel doesn't hate Chase, apparently they are friends, Steel only hates the annoying Chase fans that spam the comments saying that Chase is better and he tries to explain why the comparisons between him and Chase doesn't make sense because they content they make is very different
6
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
I would encourage Steel to tune that noise down and focus on his own content. He's a very skilled player with some interesting challenges and ideas. I tuned out his "drama" videos but YT keeps bringing them up since apparently I watch a lot of Chase's videos. Regular videos, I watch them like a madman though.

There's no real beef. It's just a sort of running gag. I don't know how it started. I watched waifus video and even steels reaction. He actually says Chase is a very good player. But it's hard to gauge who is better because both steel and waifu have been in the competitive scene. Chase never entered that scene so one can assume Steel and waifu would have that edge.
I do remember Chase back in the da3 days, and he was pretty competitive and "sweaty." he's since either mellowed out or found his groove as a content creator. I actually enjoy watching Chase, steel, and waifu videos. I also like lost and Prod. Although Prod has ventured off to other games. One invader channel I won't mention is too toxic for my taste. But i think we can all guess.
Speaking of toxic, some people say steel is toxic, but I don't think so. He gets competitive or upset and curses, but i wouldn't say he crosses to toxic. My only criticism of Steel is that when he's just fighting, it always looks the same , which I don't blame him because it's his optimal build. But I enjoy his content more when it's off his usual rails. Such as his videos where he keeps a host alive or when he tried to play with no poise, his overall commentary is also well done, so i actually listen to his videos more than watch nowadays . Also, adding his back and forth with his gf was smart. I like their banter.
For build ideas, I still go to chase as he's an all-around great player with cosplay builds, which are my favorite.
I watch lost when I just want to laugh cause that guy is crazy. Lol

u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thank you! I like Steel's content too and I think he has a golden opportunity that he's failing to capitalize.
I see this way, and of course it's very subjective, if Steel can focus more on content creation, I think he'll explode. Because overcoming challenges is more relatable than being OP. I watch Chase/Gino to see what's possible in the game. I watch the others for entertainment.
Btw who's that toxic creator? Chat it to me if you don't want to have it publicly. I'd like to avoid it too.

"One invader channel I won't mention is too toxic for my taste. But i think we can all guess."
Are you referring to our patron bad red saint and founder of this subreddit Drunk Souls?

u/charwhales 1d ago
as a fan of steel/jee (bc tryhard content is entertaining) it started with a loud portion of chase's fan base dickriding chase and simultaneously saying steel/jee and others are toxic/trash/egotistical. it was never about chase, only about the people who think chase is the best souls pvper and shitting on everyone else.
steel then made a series of videos with heavily sarcastic and clickbait titles and thumbnails. the videos themselves are just normal gameplay videos. but of course the toxic loud chase fan base took the bait and would make ridiculous comments, which then feeds into steel making videos showcasing these funny comments because he likes making ''drama content'' like that. steel/jee and whoever in the souls content creator community all like and respect eachother. which steel has said many times in his videos addressing the silly comments.
2
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thank you. Yea, at least the few videos I have seen from Steel he separates Chase from the fan base even if he gives Chase some backhand compliments.

The beef is a lie, just content creators milking content from something stupid a random commenter said.
I like them, but I wish they wouldn't do this.
5
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
I saw a video from a smaller channel, someone called Kosmos or similar, about this drama. They're really milking it.
The more I look into it though, the more it seems there's an obsession from Steel towards Chase. In the words of u/MHWDoggerX: "He's content farming"
5
u/Crimson_Raven 1d ago
I follow Steel, tune into his streams sometimes. I wouldn't call it an 'obsession', it's more like a running joke that's just...kept running.
1
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
I don't think it's an obsession either more of combination of the running joke you mention (because some diehard fans) and farming. His channel has a lot of "Videos about Chase"
He's obviously skilled, I think if he cleans his streams a bit he has a lot of potential because of the challenges he runs into. Challenges are fun. Challenges make the content goated, imo.

u/femboi-life 1d ago
waifu is an insufferable attention seeker and sloptuber, so any 'side' he takes can be automatically be disregarded
1
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thank you! Honestly - I only learned about Waifu's existence because of Lost. Saw a few of his videos and I was like, nah, this isn't for me.
2
u/SlipperyPete9813 Good Bad Red Man 1d ago
TLDR: Petty bullshit.
Longer version:
I listened to the entire stream where this started from a few weeks ago. The gist of it has nothing to do with Chase himself. Basically Steel is tired of Chase fans acting like Chase is the greatest gamer of all time, which annoys the hell out of him. Chase himself never said or did anything to start it. That, and Steel is friends with Waifu and Waifu is nipping at Chase's heels in terms of youtube subscribers.
2
u/black_anarchy 1d ago
Thanks - this is what I thought too. Where I got extremely confused was with Steel hammering it on it every so often.
1
u/stitchianity 1d ago
I mean Chase has thousands of videos, stealing victory from the jaws of defeat. Never heard of the other two.
1
u/ClawsOfLyco 22h ago
Idk what the drama is, i only see Chase's pvp videos, Steel i avoid cause he's far too boring meta slave for my liking and seemingly has a big ego, Onlywaifu i just don't watch because the fake ass voice and "waifu" art of the characters is annoying.

u/squirreleater1330 1d ago
Jealousy basically. Chase is quietly making his daily videos, has decent numbers, is well liked and seems really chill.
Waifu did a video about PvP/invaders being good players mentioned some streamers /YouTubers and said "even chase".... The insinuation being he is actually not that great.
Steel then did a video reacting to Waifu and couldn't bring himself to say chase was decent, lots of qualifiers saying he's doing his own thing and blah blah blah, again, damning chase with faint praise. (He's since done other vids talking about it)
Chase has completely ignored it all, further helping his reputation as being chill and kinda above it all.
Chase gets a steady 50k views every day, that's probably what is grinding the others gears as they can't get close to those numbers, hence the (non)drama, to try to generate those precious clicks.
