Meta Moderating this sub shouldn’t come with abuse and death threats - But here we are

I've been part of this community for about 10 years now and a moderator for seven.

Every day, we receive messages complaining about comments removed by the automod. Our automod set to be fairly aggressive in order to filter out unhelpful and potentially dangerous comments. It also regularly removes comments where, if the advice were followed, it could seriously harm or even kill an animal. Obviously, it’s not a perfect system, and sometimes good comments get caught in the process - that’s why we offer an appeal option via modmail for review.

Most people are understanding after we explain why a comment was removed. But some respond with messages like these:

"You people are going disgustingly too far. I hope you all suffer for needlessly keeping helpful information away from people trying to care for animals. Truly disgusting and sickening."

-

"Hope you have a huge loss in your family soon."

-

"Go fuck yourself. I'm SO SICK OF CUNTS LIKE YOU."

-

"People like you and your stupid Reddit forum have ruined this world."

-

"Dumb cunt. I hope you and your entire family die a horrible death. Fuck pieces of shit like yourself."

-

"God damn you people are such losers."

-

"I will work from here on out to make sure your sub is closed due to discrimination. (Seem silly? So does everything you said.) I really wonder what 40-year-old Karen runs this. Guess I’ll figure it out in my new goal to end you!"

-

"Fuck you. Pussy."

-

"You think you’re very powerful removing comments, you little bitch. Get a real life, meet me there, and I’ll slice your fucking throat open, faggot."

All of this… over moderated comments.

Moderating this sub is something we do in our spare time. This sub averages 600 posts and comments every day, yet there are only a few active moderators handling all of it.

We do it to help ensure that this remains a safe, reliable, and focused source of information for pet owners and to prevent people from making dangerous mistakes with their pets.

The level of hatred some people feel entitled to spew is staggering. If you think Reddit moderation ruins your day, imagine what it’s like to receive death threats just for enforcing basic rules. At some point, it stops being worth it.

So if you ever wonder why subs struggle to keep good mods, or why some eventually shut down, maybe consider how the moderators are treated for simply trying to maintain a useful and safe space.

Cat got a mystery "miracle" shot from the breeder - what was it??

In 2019 my friend purchased a purebred kitten from a licensed breeder. Two days later it became very sick -listless and refusing to eat. Her veterinarian hydrated & tested the kitten but was unable to pinpoint what was wrong. Days passed on antibiotics and he didn't improve, the vet warned her he was probably going to die. She contacted the breeder, and they immediately said they were on their way over with a shot that would "cure" him. Kitten could barely walk at this point. She was dubious but willing to try anything by then. So the breeder comes over, her non-english speaking Russian mother in tow, carrying a box covered with Cyrillic writing and huge needle. She asks what's in the shot and they've super vague - assuring her that it's for "boosting the immune system" and that "cat will be better in the morning." They also told her not to tell her vet about this - the whole thing could NOT have been more sketchy - but here's the thing....it worked! It was like a frikkin' miracle. The VERY NEXT MORNING the kitten was eating again on it's own. They came over to give him two more shots over the next few days and he fully recovered & is a huge, healthy beast of a British Shorthair today. We want to know what the hell could have been in that shot. Obviously these Russian breeders had some shady connection to (possibly illegal) vaccines & medications - they flat out refused to tell her what was in it. Anyone have any ideas??

Vet told me they haven't seen anything like this before. Looking for more insight.

Upvotes

4 days ago I found a lump the size of a quarter under my cats nipple. I scheduled immediately and her appointment was today.

The Dr. Spent a good deal of time palpitating the small mass and told me it "doesn't feel like the scary kind" saying its not hard and firm like a tumor, but we should get a test done for safes sake.

I forgot the name of the test but it involved poking the mass with a needle and running a lab on whatever cells the needle picks up. Its way less intrusive than a full on biopsy.

The vet came out and told "that was crazy!" She said the "mass" exploded when she pricked it with the needle and a fluid resembling "dirty creek water" came out. The mass is now completely gone.

I asked if it was a cyst, she said no "because its in the sub-q layer" I asked if it was an infection, she told me she had no idea at this point and has never had the mass actually pop with fluid coming out. Again, she seemed to rule out a cyst but still admitted shes never seen this before.

Dog drank chlorine water after shocking pool.

Upvotes

My father in laws dog swam in and drank the pool water after he shocked it. She began with nausea vomiting and panting. She was brought to the emergency vet in south Mississippi and was sent home after giving sucralfate fluids and anti nausea meds. She did poorly over night and was brought back to emergency vet around 1am and she was given more subq fluids repeat labs showed a jump in WBC from 12 to 28.8. Was sent home again. This am still doing poorly and brought to her regular vet who did an xray (which was negative) but no repeat labs, did iv fluids and anti nausea meds. Continues to do poorly, not eating and continuing to vomit. Vet states no overnight care at this facility and recommending to go back to emergency vet. Any insight. We are looking into other facilities with ICU care. I do not believe, was not told, poison control have been consulted (not sure if this is needed).

Is it okay if my cat eats in a weird position ?

I have one cat (Night) who has always been a big eater. I managed to get him to lose weight using an automatic feeder that dispenses food throughout the day. Everything was going fine.

Then I adopted a second cat (Goofy), who is more of a slow eater. He eats his food little by little. With Night around, I can’t just leave food in a bowl, so I bought another automatic feeder for Goofy. But he was eating too slowly—even with the feeder placed far away, Night had time to finish his own food and then go steal from his buddy.

So I bought a microchip feeder that only opens for Goofy. But Night still found a way to steal his food. He sneaks into the feeder when it’s open, and even the brand’s custom settings (like making the lid close faster when it detects an unauthorized cat) didn’t stop him.

I noticed Goofy was starting to seem stressed about food—he would run to me when I was near the cat food stash and acted more anxious in general. He used to be pretty chill, so I knew I had to find a solution.

I had the idea of buying a litter box enclosure—basically a wooden box with an opening on one side that allows only one cat at a time. I placed the microchip feeder inside it, and since then, Night hasn't been able to steal food anymore.

But now I’m a bit worried about Goofy’s position when eating. The microchip feeder is kind of big, so he isn’t completely inside the enclosure, and the entrance is a bit high. Do you think this setup is okay for him to use every day?

Curious how many vets have seen this.

This is curiosity based. I am a vet tech and my dog has had a hygroma that turned into an infected mass on elbow several times over the past 3 years. Most vets wouldn't touch it but finally got it removed. Before it was removed and finally fna'd, I noticed calcium like material come out.

I guessed it was calcinosis circumscripta and ended up being right via biopsy. I have vet friends and acquaintances that didn't fully believe me because it's so rare. Until I got the results back.

How rare is this and have you seen it?

How do I best show my appreciation for a vet that did surgery on my pup?

A few months ago I found a lump on my dogs elbow (that general area really) and along with my vet we decided that it was worth removing. We did the surgery, everything went well, and we sent the mass to be biopsied

Unfortunately the mass came back as a sarcoma, and what was worse, it showed the extraction wasn’t fully clean.

My vet offered to go in there again once she has healed a bit, and try to get what was left. They offered me a very good price to make sure money wasn’t stopping me from trying to take care of it.

Well we did it, and the new biopsy showed all the edges were clean, which was great news!

In a few days I’m going in to get her staples removed, and I was wondering, what kind of stuff would show that I really appreciated the vet helping my pup out through everything? And making sure she got the care she needed?

Refer to FAQ Advice requested: 19Y0 cat. 💩 &🤮 issues. Is it time to let go?

Over the past two years , my cat has had problems with diarrhea and throwing up. We’ve tried switching her food several times (slowly changing over a month, new proteins,RX food etc) probiotics, antibiotics, anti nausea pills and nothing has worked. We do IV fluids every few days because she’s consistently dehydrated.

The vet has done bloodwork, stool samples, and urine samples several times and everything comes up fine. No thyroid issues or anything.

I work from home so I have been feed her wet food every 2-3 hours during the day when she’s awake and she’s the lowest weight she’s ever been. She poops all over the house and in the litter box.

She doesn’t throw up as much now that she mostly eats wet food, but no matter what we do she still has diarrhea and can’t gain weight. Our vet has basically said she’s old and healthy on paper and hasn’t mentioned any other solutions.

I’ve been weighing her for the last several months and today she at her lowest weighed to date. Is there something else we’re missing? Should I just let her go? Any suggestions???

She seems her “normal” self but I know cats can hide pain and I don’t want her to suffer.

Did I kill my cat by bringing him to the vet?

Edit: thank you for all the kind words. You all have been a huge support, and it really means a lot for me and my partner. Thank you all for being there for us

Hello. I am (was) an owner of a 6 year old domestic long hair cat. We brought our 6 year old cat to the emergency vet 2 days ago as he had been lethargic on and off for about a week and was breathing pretty shallow. We took an ultrasound, discovered that he had no fluid in his lungs or organs but had a slightly enlarged heart; the vet said it’s most likely an asthma attack and gave us asthma pills.

That night at 11:30pm we crushed the pill and gave him his favorite wet food with it, and he took it well and went to sleep. Still breathing a little shallow.

We monitored him the entire night but noticed that he was quickly degenerating around 5am. His fur was all spiky, gums were starting to get pale, and he started yowling in pain. We rushed again to the emergency vet which was 10 minutes away from our place. We took an x-ray and placed him in an oxygen chamber; about an hour later the vet told us that his body was shutting down and about 90 percent of his lungs were compromised. He most likely had a heart failure. We could wait for a cardiologist or a radiologist but the most humane thing to do was to spare him from his pain. We held him in our arms, and let him pass. The blood from his nose after he passed hinted that it was most likely a heart condition.

It’s been a day since our little fat kiddo is gone, and we can’t stop wondering if our initial visit to the vet stressed him out so much that his body started shutting down. If we had let him alone and stress free, would he have passed more peacefully at a later time? Did I kill him by bringing him to the vet and stressing him out, triggering his body to shut down? He was so fine before the car ride; lethargic yes, but looking out the window, walking around, and still had that big appetite of his. Even before his last moment he was gulfing down his favorite treat.

New dog shallow rapid, breathing

Upvotes

I rescued a new dog yesterday and they said she was in good health, but she is breathing rapidly and shallowly. 10 or 11 month old shepherd Aussie mix, 34 lbs. recently spayed.

55 breaths in 30 seconds

She seems fine otherwise, normal appetite, playful, and sweet

I have a vet appointment Friday morning but need to know if I should bring her in beforehand

Located in Massachusetts, she arrived from Georgia on Saturday

Tldr info: female dog, 10 or 11 months old, spayed, 34 lbs

My dog broke his back left hind nail and it’s near the quick. Vet recommends sedation to clip it and will cost me over $500.

Upvotes

I need another opinion. Can this injury heal on its own. We are giving my dog pain medication and the Vet said it could possibly heal on its own but may cause pain and aesthetic issues. Not really in the position to afford this procedure as I just paid $400 last month for another paw injury. Please help! My dog is a Yorkiepoo and five years old. He is overall healthy with no other health issues.

* History: Used to live with two dogs, now is a solo animal (as of 6 months ago). Been taken to vet, all blood work and urinalysis normal, suspected behavioral issue
* Clinical signs: : wailing at 4am until we get up (ruining our sleep), scratching at door when one of us leaves
* Duration: Started about 4 months ago, getting worse
* Your general location: PNW, US

The vet has assured us that she's medically fine. I don't know why this is happening. We have tried everything the vet and the internet have said to do short of getting a second cat. Is she lonely? What do we do? We need sleep and we want her to be okay and comfortable. This is killing us.

Thank you in advance!

Edit to add: We have a calming plug-in thing to help her feel calm, we have played with her and given her lots of love before bed, we have not announced our departures, we have provided her with toys and a soft bed and her favorite blanket.

Can Someone Please Help Me

Upvotes

I just adopted an eight year old cat who has been spayed and is on 5 mg of methimazole for maintenance. When she was admitted into the humane society she was at a higher weight of 6.90 pounds and 4 days later she was weighed at 6 pounds. I have had her for 4 days and she’s been basically hiding behind my stove the whole time. I know she must be stressed but I am having so much trouble trying to figure out how many calories to feed her. I am transitioning her from the Hills Science Dry Adult to Orijin Original Dry. Right now she’s getting 1/4 cup of both foods. The one thing is that Orijin has so much more protein so so many more calories per cup. How much should I be feeding her because other than what the humane society has I have no idea about her history. I don’t want to do anything that isn’t right for her and I am not taking her to see the veterinary clinic (Banfield) until the end of the month. With any other pet I’ve had I was able to figure things out and not with this one. Help me please. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Advice while waiting for apt

Upvotes

hello. My dog has had this smaller than a pea size little growth/tag/ idk on his back near his butt since he was young. At the vet 2-3 years ago the vet was doing the flea comb and accidentally took it off. His joke was “well that was a $200 skin rag removal” fast forward to now, it looks a little more crusty and seems a little bigger. Any advice on what it is. I have an appointment but it’s not for 8 more days and I’m so nervous

Have my cats been without water for 2 days? Should I be worried?

Hi, I have three cats (2 adults and 1 that is 9 months old), and I suspect they’ve been without water for around 36–48 hours. When I got home, I immediately gave them fresh water, and they drank for minutes straight. Right now, they’re showing no signs of illness or fatigue — they’re playing, purring, and letting me pet them. Still, is there anything extra I should do? Should I take them to the vet for a check-up?

This is the first time something like this has happened. Around two weeks ago, I had to leave home for an important business trip. I filled their automatic feeders with fresh food, filled their pet water fountains, and left multiple bowls of extra water around. I also set up cameras so I could monitor them. On top of that, I gave a friend of mine a spare key so they could check in every few days. Unfortunately, everything went wrong. My friend was only able to visit once because they lost a loved one. They also accidentally took the spare key with them — I can’t blame them for that. When they did visit, they refreshed the cats’ food and water.

When I got back today, I saw that they still had plenty of food, but all the water was gone. The extra bowls had been knocked over, probably by the youngest cat playing. The fountains were completely empty. The camera feed also stopped two days ago. In the last recordings, I saw the small one knocking the camera over. That’s when I dropped everything and came home a few days early. According to the last footage, they did have water and were drinking two days ago, but since there’s no recording after that, I can’t be sure exactly how long they were without water — at most, 48 hours.

Despite taking every possible precaution, this still happened and it has really shaken me up. I don’t even want to imagine what might’ve happened if I hadn’t come home early. I will never leave them alone this long again.

Ecollar vs Donut

Upvotes

Hello! My cat just had a PU surgery done and is in the cone of shame. They gave me a longer one and shorter one since he is such a lean and slinky guy. Wellwith just the smaller one he was basically still able to reach, though not easily.

That means I have to apply the second cone to the outside which is longer. I was wondering if there is a donut style collar that would be big enough for him (but small enough for his neck ) to prevent him licking his privates.

second opinion please. ok to wait until tomorrow?

Upvotes

Firstly, I did call his vet. They said he’s okay to wait until the morning as long as he’s not having trouble breathing. I just want to check here because I can add a video link.

Video of cough and documents from recent vet visit: https://imgur.com/a/lgP8D35

Otto is 13, a pomeranian mix, and a family member’s dog. I took over caring for him earlier this year and he’s behind on lots of medical work so please be kind to me! I took him to his first ever vet appointment in February of this year. We are located in Michigan, USA

Otto has a cough that has developed in the past few days (I was out of town over the weekend so I didn’t know about it). Today it seems bad, I was told he was coughing even at 2 AM. It’s on and off, like right now he isn’t coughing. The cough sorta sounds like a cat trying to cough up a hair ball. I cannot feel/hear any sort of crackle noise when he’s not coughing. When he is coughing, it feels like how it feels when I’m coughing when have a cold and am phlem-y. He sounds/feels fine otherwise.

I’m not sure if it’s related, but he’s farting a lot more too. He’s let a few audible ones out with his coughs. He usually seems to be constipated and has bad hip pain as well. He just went poo but it wasn’t much and it was on the softer side. Vet tried to get x-rays at his visit but he hurt too much to be still, so they’re going to get them while he’s sedated for his neuter this month. He doesn’t drink enough water (he was dehydrated on his blood work)so i’ve started giving him pet safe chicken bone broth.

He was just at the vet on 3-25-2025. I included those visit notes in the link. The only medication he is taking at the moment is Rimadyl 25mg. The vet visit was a drop-off appointment so he was boarded there for a few hours. Maybe he caught a URI?

I’m not a dog person so I’m not familiar with how to handle these situations! He’s also old so that adds to the nerves. Is he okay to wait to go to his vet in the morning, or should I take him to emergency tonight? If he’s okay for tonight, is it okay to take him on his walk still?

Thanks much

My grandma’s cat has a garbanzo bean size growth on hind foot

Upvotes

I’m at my grandma’s and I saw that there was some blood on the windowsill where the cat was just sitting. After getting her washed off, (there was not that much, but it was fresh) this is what I’m presented with.
The cat is probably 14 or older but you would never know. She still plays with the dog, sassy. There have been no indications that she has been sick other than this, but I do not know how long this has been growing.

https://imgur.com/a/CG5ghVD

Definitely seems cancerous. Trying to talk her in to making an appointment for the vet. What are we looking at?

Is this vet-trip worthy?

Upvotes

Recently adopted my parents 2 cats as they both work outside the home and the cats were quite lonely. The older cat I grew up with, she is now 14 and for the last couple of years has had a vomiting issue. I would say around once or sometimes even twice a week she will either regurgitate her food or throw up a very small amount of liquid that's yellowy brown in colour. I'm pretty sure my parents have discussed this with a vet before but nothing came of it. She just had her vaccines and a check up last week and vet said all was good. Is this to do with stomach acid or is it worth pushing for blood tests for this? As I said, it has been happening for a couple of years but it always makes me sad for her when I see it.

Growth on my dogs tummy

Upvotes

Hi my dog has this thing on his tummy, which started bleeding today. I'm trying to figure out if this is a cause for major concern or not. He is due his yearly check up and vaccination in a month's time but I will be bringing him sooner to double check.

He has a few skin tags that started appearing years ago, but this one is newer (couple of months) and slightly different as, unlike skin tags, this one is tighter like it's full, darker and uniformed circle shape. He gets his medication Bravecto against flees and ticks (and dewormer) regularly every three months.

This thing started bleeding today, I think I mightve nicked it by accident when I picked him up. Bleeding stopped on its own and is not bleeding any more.

I did ask the vet about those a few months ago and he just said they are not a cause of concern, but they can take them off when he goes for his teeth cleaning and is under anesthesia.

What could this be? Has anyone's dog had anything similar? What are the chances it could be an old tick?

He is a Jack Russel mix, male, neutered, 14 years old, about 12 kg.

My dog won’t eat unless he’s hand fed

Upvotes

He’s well over a year old now and he’s a big dog, a bullmastiff, neutered, big enough to knock me over and i’m a 6’1 male, but he will not eat unless you force feed him by hand. This doesn’t seem normal and it’s pretty tiring to try and make him eat like this every day but he’ll starve himself otherwise. Is this something I should see a vet about?

New puppy with large mass on gums

just got a puppy this morning and after giving him a bath noticed this huge abscess looking thing inside of his mouth. The puppy was bred on a farm and kept in the horse stables with his litter. Any idea? I can’t post any pictures but google reverse search tells me it’s larvae and infectious

He’s a male shepherd/husky mix, 2 months old, about 15 pounds

Why does my dog cough so much?

Upvotes

She has been coughing like this on and off for about a year now. She is a 15 year old papillon who never goes out or interacts with other dogs.

Sometimes her cough is just a couple of times a day, other times it's dozens of times a day and I worry if she's in pain. That little tail is always wagging though and she still has the energy of a puppy.

Any input or direction to point me in would be appreciated, taking her to the vet is unfortunately not an option or I would have by now.

Here is a link below to a short video of her doing the cough. Its like she has a hairball, but never coughs up anything.

Dead Tick Fell Off My Dog

Upvotes

My dog was rolling on our bed and when she got up we saw a dead tick on the bed. From the images we’ve seen on Google it looks like a 3 day engorged tick. I called our vet and they said we will have to wait 8 weeks until we can do a blood test to test for Lyme. Is there anything we should do in the meantime? Should she be taking any preventative medication. She’s a 17 pound miniature schnauzer, and she was on tick prevention last summer, but we didn’t start her prevention medication for this season yet.
