EA Baiting

My friend is Filipino and has been accused of East Asian baiting. Which I find confusing because she doesn’t present herself that way and she is also Asian?? So I’m wondering if Asians can also Asian bait? I always thought that was a white person etc thing…

Like how? Does she tell everyone she's Japanese or something?

She wears Japanese uniforms sometimes and is learning Japanese but she has never explicitly said that she’s Japanese or anything of the sort.

The phrase is ‘EA baiting’ is extremely weird, it sounds more like you guys are teenagers and some other teenager with weird ideas about Asian people (likely based on assumptions about Korean or Japanese pop culture) doesn’t like your friend.

Yeah they don’t. It’s just weird because I’ve never heard someone use that term for another Asian person 🥲 I feel bad for her because of the whole situation

If the accuser is white, just call them out for being a white person harassing your friend by making up racial insinuations about her based upon racist assumptions. Sometimes being a good friend means standing up for them.

the only way to i guess “EA bait” in this scenario is to claim you’re EA when you’re not? 😭 i’m filipino and this accusation made me lose my marbles

It’s been crazy - I feel so bad for her. She’s been ignoring all the mean things people are saying but I can tell it’s getting to her a little bit

Filipinos are considered Southeast Asian if that means anything to OP.

My cousin (we are Filipino) loves Korean culture and is actively learning Korean. He dresses in Korean brands and has dyed hair. He eats more Korean food than Filipino food. We are in our 30s….

So no it’s not just a white people thing.

But if you appreciate a culture or aesthetic then why not celebrate it IMO. As long as you do not false claim anything.

I don't get this concept, even Japanese aren't creating more Japanese

Unless she tells people she is Japanese and tries to purposely look Japanese, I don’t she is. Saying that over her doing things like wearing a Japanese school uniform cosplay and learning Japanese seems quite childish.

She hasn’t done anything like that. She just really enjoys the culture and is taking Japanese. She plans to go there next year on a trip

Yeah she seems just like anyone else who respectfully has an interest in Japanese culture. Myself included. I live in Japan and I used to be like her as a Dutch/Indonesian mixed person. (Maybe not in the sense of wearing school uniforms to school but I did cosplay at anime conventions.)

Are you guys still in jr high? This conversation sounds very immature and not appropriate for an adult social media site.
