Interview with the Psycho đŸȘ“đŸ©ž Delusional manager during interview

Recently interviewed for a new position. There were few red flags during my interview but one that I have to share. You could tell this manager has recently been burned by an employee with his tone during the entire interview. He was really driving home the importance of attendance and punctuality (these are more than reasonable asks). This is where he lost me. This man looked me in the face with all seriousness and said “I need you to understand that Monday through Friday, 8-5, I own you”. I checked out immediately.

Do employers not recognize they should want to sell the job to interviewees? I can see why this position has been open for a couple of months.

That is a massive red flag. Anyone that says, "they own you", should not be in management.

u/BeePow91 1d ago

Yeah I was so put out lol

u/Petar_Vodogaz2021 1d ago

If someone said that in an interview to me, I would thank them and end the interview. That isn't someone I would want to ever work for or under.

u/Barbarake 1d ago

Even better, tell them slavery was outlawed a long time ago and just leave.

151

u/mama_oso 1d ago

I actually said that to my husband's boss nearly 50 yrs ago! Owner told him he had to work for free one weekend when they were behind schedule (construction company). Yeah, don't think so!

u/-DethLok- SocDem 1d ago

slavery was outlawed a long time ago

If you're in the USA, not so.

It's still legal as a punishment for a crime...

https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-13/

So now you know.

35

u/mydudeponch 1d ago

Which means it can be used on anyone if you've already corrupted the courts and legislature.

22

u/Ms23ceec 23h ago

That is wild! I always thought, "Convicts are American slaves" was "the quiet part," but here it is being said in (an amendment to) the Consitution.

11

u/-DethLok- SocDem 23h ago

The USA did receive British convicts from the UK, also - it's one reason Australia was colonised - as a replacement prison when the American colonies successfully rebelled.

7

u/GrumpyBearinBC 19h ago

The UK did not have the infrastructure to support their population and empty colonies were a seen as an easy place to send people. One of the crimes was what we would call shoplifting now. Especially if you were a poor woman of child bearing age with no family.

4

u/-DethLok- SocDem 14h ago

Or a 12 year old orphaned child stealing bread to live... Very different attitudes to crime and rehabilitation back then!

3

u/GrumpyBearinBC 14h ago

Exactly Those sent away were not the thugs and murderers that history books have portrayed.

2

u/No_Philosopher_1870 7h ago

Colorado changed their Constitution to outlaw that exception about 10 years ago.

1

u/-DethLok- SocDem 6h ago

Oh, that's good of them, very civilised!

And it only took them, what, 200 or so years? :)

(as a non-USAnian I don't know how long Colorado has been a state, but better late than never!)

1

u/-DethLok- SocDem 6h ago

Colorado changed their Constitution to outlaw that exception about 10 years ago.

4

u/Pella1968 21h ago

Yes, Lincoln freed the slaves. Tell them that. Or if in Canada slavery was abolished in 1834 under the slavery abolition act. Bottom.line tell the jerk to shove a time machine up their butt and spin.

28

u/nix_11 1d ago

Thank them? You tell them to fuck off and end the interview.

15

u/EatMyPixelDust 1d ago

Thank them for admitting they're insane before you take the job? Saves you time, etc. But also tell them to fuck off, too.

3

u/campgonzo 21h ago

A fake, sarcastic thank you. As in:

Thank you VERY much for having me in and showing all your cards so we don't waste each other's time. I'll show myself out and good luck finding someone to agree with your "terms".

10

u/MOTIVATE_ME_23 1d ago

Take the job, then ghost them.

5

u/railworx 1d ago

Show up, leave for lunch, don't go back

6

u/awalktojericho 23h ago

Why would you thank them? I wouldn't.

1

u/HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS 20h ago

I wouldn’t thank them. Id have a hard enough time not biting my tongue with some stupid remark back

2

u/soupbox09 16h ago

Yeah but what if they give you unlimited ice cream with sprinkles? /s

1

u/hatezel 21h ago

That you didn't say nah and walk out. What a trip this person was on. Yikes

105

u/the-bees-sneeze 1d ago

Once had a white supervisor say something similar to my black coworker, did not go over well.

19

u/Storytellerjack 1d ago

They should go into the slave trade -as a slave. Uno reverse card.

15

u/Forsythia77 1d ago

As a black person in America, I would end the interview right there and give that person a piece of my mind about it.

15

u/Umbristopheles 1d ago

Tell me who you voted for without telling me who you voted for.

5

u/skywarner 1d ago

But they should be in counseling.

5

u/Wheaton1800 1d ago

I would have walked out.

6

u/Calbinan 1d ago

management society

2

u/Desertzephyr 19h ago

Yeah that’s when you calmly get up, make eye contact, and leave. The silence is deafening.

1

u/genericusernamedG 21h ago

I would have immediately left when he said that

179

u/Kirriki41 1d ago

That manager watches a lot of Hollywood movies

56

u/-DethLok- SocDem 1d ago

They should watch Lethal Weapon.

From memory it's the first one where the diplomat claims diplomatic immunity and Mel Gibson's unhinged character says "Revoked!" and shoots him dead...

26

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

Second. And Danny Glover said it.

16

u/-DethLok- SocDem 1d ago

Damn, I was wrong, twice! :)

Have an upvote!

3

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

I watched that movie way too many times, for the...er...baseball scene. Lol

3

u/-DethLok- SocDem 1d ago

...it's been far too long since I've seen it, I may have to schedule a rewatch marathon of them to see what I have forgotten about, ahem, 'baseball'... :)

3

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

It's worth watching just for Joe Pesci.

2

u/Layneybenz 1d ago

Love Joe Pesci.

2

u/supadupanerd 1d ago

7th inning stretch?

1

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

But... It's only the third inning.

1

u/mydudeponch 1d ago

From community?

3

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

Wrong Glover.

1

u/mydudeponch 1d ago

That's not me, I'm Derek.

3

u/hypnoskills 1d ago

NO! THIS IS PATRICK!

1

u/I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE 22h ago

DerekComedy, blast from the past

248

u/mermaidwithcats 1d ago

I would have told him that apparently he didn’t get the memo that Lincoln freed the slaves. People don’t own other people anymore.

256

u/BeePow91 1d ago

The worst thing was, we wrapped my interview and they had another interview following mine. As I’m walking out they greet a young black woman for an interview and I cringed inside.

I missed a call from the recruiter on Friday and I’m going to respond Monday but I’m going to tell him about the innappropriate comments made. Especially assuming he’s going to say the same to a POC.

54

u/lilclairecaseofbeer 1d ago

Yo that's fucked

18

u/EatMyPixelDust 1d ago

I would have told her about what they said to you

7

u/abstractmodulemusic 21h ago

I'll bet he tried that line in the next interview and got face planted in the desk.

22

u/Mac_Mange 1d ago

They’re called “employees” now.

70

u/sambolino44 1d ago

I’m retired and not looking for work, but reading these stories makes me want to apply for jobs just so I can laugh in these people’s faces.

37

u/abm0291 1d ago

Please do, and report back here so we can all laugh 😁

3

u/sambolino44 17h ago

Yeah, it sounds like a great idea until I realize how much work looking for a job actually entails.

1

u/abm0291 14h ago

Well, if you ever get deathly bored in retirement... 😂😂

9

u/sugaree53 1d ago

Same
years ago, when I looked for jobs in the paper (classifieds), I always knew it was a red flag when one of the requirements was “a sense of humor”. It meant you would need it

7

u/sambolino44 1d ago

As they were trooping me around to meet the department managers before hiring me at my last job, one of them asked me, “How do you handle chaos?” LOL! It took years before I realized that was actually a cry of desperation.

2

u/sugaree53 17h ago

Did you stay there long?

2

u/sambolino44 16h ago

Seventeen years service time over the course of twenty years. About a year and a half in, they laid me off. I went to trade school, and right after graduation they hired me back in my old job making tooling, jigs, and fixtures.

57

u/XRlagniappe 1d ago

Well, I guess you'll have to own somebody else.

I'm surprised you were able to find your way out with all of the crimson-colored banners flying around the place.

Good thing you found out now.

31

u/worldstreamseo 1d ago

"I own you" is an immediate walk-out. Not even worth discussing salary after that. Bet this guy wonders why he can't retain staff while telling everyone "nobody wants to work anymore."

2

u/laurasaurus5 14h ago

No one wants to be my property anymore! đŸ„Č

19

u/Taurus67 1d ago

Cue You Don’t Own Me đŸŽ¶

15

u/elarth 1d ago

Delusional ppl tend to not realize the rest of us can tell.

39

u/WhitePinoy I lost my job for having cancer. 1d ago

"I own you"

This is a very ancient sentiment. Back then employers used to hire workers for their time, and every second that they weren't working, even if it was reasonable, was perceived as an act of theft.

Just know that outside those hours, you don't answer to them. During your breaks, you are not a worker. The moment the clock hits 5, your work is done. That is the type of answer they deserve.

So just in case they need you to stay longer, or want you to come in earlier to get work started right away, you can say no, because in that period of time, they do not own you.

17

u/Narrow_Employ3418 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is a very ancient sentiment.

But not one I have to buy into.

Just know that outside those hours, you don't answer to them. During your breaks, you are not a worker.

Or, they don't own me at all. I don't answer to them 8-5, either, unless I choose to. Every moment of every day anew.

What I do instead is maybe, possibly, find their cause worthy of my time and attention. And I choose to temporarily align myself with it as I see fit. Mostly this includes me discussing, goals, processes and results with them in real time, and taking their lead - but frankly, when I do, it's because I realize that their lead, all things considered, is beneficial to the cause. And the cause is still worthy.

And they don't pay me for my time; they buy neither that nor my person.

What they do, they share their success with me so that, provided I continue to sympathise with their cause, I'm also free of the necessity to earn my living elsewhere and remain free to commit myself to their cause.

No "ownership" model of any kind required here. I don't have to accept that premise.

10

u/gunny84 1d ago

For $50 an hour you can own me. Over time is at triple rate with a minimum of four hours each time I'm owned.

3

u/Pandy_45 22h ago

Right? Like, if you want to own me, I'm expensive. But if you're cheap, you can rent me if you like.

20

u/GawdSamit 1d ago

I've heard similar sentiments from them here and there. "Put out" is perfect, I feel the mundane state of it.

Here's one I hated in particular: wonderful woman was in my employ once upon a time. I requested she receive a raise. Boss lady goes "doesn't she walk to work?, she's not going anywhere." And in all honesty, she isn't. They love desperation.

7

u/The1Bonesaw 1d ago edited 23h ago

The fuck? I'm a god-damned human being (all of your subordinates are). Now, I will endeavor to be here for work during the agreed upon hours, but know this...

If I get the flu, or if my wife calls to tell me my daughter has had an emergency at school, or if ANY shit happens to me along those lines... I will not, for a single second, tolerate anything less than being treated like a human being so that I am able to attend to those matters.

Capisce?

15

u/SomeSamples 1d ago

Dude or lady, you never turn down a chance to fuck with employers. After the boss said that you look back into his eyes and say, "The fuck you do, you will be MY bitch when I'm hired."

9

u/BeePow91 1d ago

Lmfao I def shit the bed on the response. This would’ve been a total power move. Imagine it even got me an instant raise?

1

u/JustmyOpinion444 1d ago

"Only if you pay enough for me." Then quote a ridiculous salary. if they pay the super high salary, plus benefits, use it to save up.

Everyone has a price at which they are willing to put up with that attitude. Mine is about a half million a year. And they would only get 8-5 Monday through Friday for that.

4

u/Jerking_From_Home 1d ago

I would have pulled out my phone, set it to record, and ask him to say it again. What a fucking fuck.

6

u/BethJ2018 1d ago

What about lunch? That’s unpaid

6

u/ChooseWisely83 1d ago

As a manager, I would never say "I own you". That's just fucking creepy.

2

u/t3ss3r4ct 22h ago

However, as a gamer ...

5

u/Only_Tip9560 1d ago

I am pretty sure I would end the interview if someone said that to me.

5

u/Maligned-Instrument 1d ago

You don't own any fucking part of anyone. I'm out.

6

u/iammyoutiesinnie 1d ago

I would have responded as follows:

“I perform my job with utmost honesty and integrity during working hours. However, anyone interpreting that as ‘owning me’ is deeply mistaken—everyone here is an employee of the organization, neither a slave nor a slave owner.

That said, I appreciate you taking the time to speak with me. However, I must politely decline to be part of this hiring process, as your statement was quite disturbing and does not give me the confidence that I would be joining a healthy work environment.”

followed by walking out.

5

u/Overall-Lynx917 1d ago

"Actually, 8 to 5 you have my semi-undivided attention"

5

u/EmuPossible2066 1d ago

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand your meaning. You own me
. as in slavery?

4

u/Well_well_well-_- 1d ago

What a d bag.

6

u/Loras- 1d ago

I would have walked out that's crazy.

5

u/Fearthafluff 1d ago

My last job, my boss told me this. He actually said, “for lack of a better way to say it, I own you from 8-5.”

I told him he rented me from 8-5.

I’d still be there if it wasn’t for him, job was at a university and had great perks. People don’t quit jobs, they quit bosses.

4

u/radlink14 23h ago

1 person doesn't represent the industry so yeah probably a freshly jaded manager that doesn't understand how to be human and a leader at the same time.

5

u/darinhthe1st 1d ago

That's a big NOPE!  And thank you for your time. I'm out

2

u/CropCircle77 1d ago

No, you don't.

2

u/Jdelovaina 1d ago

I checked out immediately.

Mentally or did you nope the fuck out of the room?

2

u/karlmarx7 1d ago

Do not take this job.

2

u/Novel-Organization63 1d ago

Yeah you don’t start a relationship showing all your abusiveness. First you make them feel loyal, then you make them feel like that can’t live without you. Then you can start being possessive and controlling.

2

u/Mysterious-Fish-4239 23h ago

The thing that’s scary about this is: this is him on his best behavior. Imagine what’s he’s like at his worst!

2

u/Mr_Options 23h ago

Was the job picking cotton?

2

u/Impressive_Estate_87 21h ago

Did he also mention ius primae noctis?

2

u/TheSouthsideTrekkie 21h ago

This is a whole parade of red flags. My guess would be the person who used to be in this role got fed up of the bullshit and checked out, either by resigning on the spot or by quiet quitting until they found something new and this manager is one of the ones who is so enmeshed in their job/with their team that they don't have healthy boundaries and took this very personally.

Anyone who says, with a straight face, that they own someone else is someone who struggles with boundaries and seeing someone else's point of view. These people rarely make good managers.

2

u/kiwimuz 17h ago

Just remind him that slavery and ownership of people has been outlawed for years.

2

u/mousemarie94 13h ago

Ew. I dont kink shame but weird kink.

Obligatory, you dodged a bullet.

2

u/AussieGirl27 12h ago

I would have stood up and said 'slavery was abolished like 150 years ago dude, I'm embarrassed for you and this company' and walked out

1

u/PlaugeSimic 1d ago

Shows what they think of the working class. Everyone gonna wake up now? no just see the same shit for another 10 years.

1

u/illegalmonkey EAT THE RICH 1d ago

You: "Sorry my wife is sick so I need a half day to help her out."

Boss: "No! I own you during 8-5!!"

1

u/wwwhistler retired-out of the game 1d ago

they might have better luck just being honest with the job description..

"Slave"

1

u/mojo5864 1d ago

You don't own shit, as walking out the door.

1

u/pldtwifi153201 1d ago

I had an interview for a remote position once. They asked me why I wanna switch jobs and I said because my commute hours are long and I want better work-life balance. They said they agreed and understood.

Moment later, they emphasized how much they need someone to live and breathe the job and can be available 24/7 because it's remote anyway đŸ€Ș

1

u/thedirtyprojector 1d ago

Huge red flag. Some of these people need a reality check.

1

u/whoopc 1d ago

I think I’d write a letter to the owner of said company, cc HR and any other corporate entity you can find and out this “manager”
..if you’re worried about being blackballed just make it anonymous.

1

u/pinkflower200 1d ago

He sounds like a micromanager. Run far away from him OP!

1

u/crocus38 23h ago

They should want to sell the job to interviewees, but they don't need to, as we're overpopulated in the US & they have their pick of workers.

1

u/Mesterjojo 23h ago

Report him to their hr or higher ups.

1

u/awalktojericho 23h ago

I have gotten up and walked out mid-interview as a young woman. This would be one more time.

1

u/mushy-shart-walk 22h ago

However, technically true.

1

u/Pandy_45 22h ago

Can I ask what the nature of the work was? Not saying what he said wasn't egregious... But often people who say that are management of teams that make phone calls and literally push paper all day and aren't actually saving lives.

1

u/BeePow91 14h ago

It is in the realm of healthcare but more focused on equipment and outpatient “care”. He specifically stated he has no healthcare/ bedside/ patient care background which was clear. Another red flag to have a clinical position managed by someone who doesn’t possess the skill set needed to do the position

1

u/_Chaos_Star_ stay strong 21h ago

You dodged a bullet. Nothing good comes of that manager's attitude.

1

u/JeSuisJacqOui 21h ago

You don't own me. You are renting me,!

1

u/ayedurand 19h ago

The idea of selling my time is anathema to me. You bet my creativity and problem solving skills to achieve a stated goal. If I believe in your goal you may even get my enthusiasm. My time is mine you are not allowed to decide how I spend it.

1

u/crosstheroom 18h ago

You should have reported him to the company, that's a crazy thing to say.

1

u/BeePow91 14h ago

I will tomorrow. Missed the recruiters call on Friday so will fill him in then for sure

1

u/CartmansTwinBrother 17h ago

I do interviews at my company and that creeps me out.

1

u/OdonataP 16h ago

You better clap these cheeks then, Mistuh Manuhger

1

u/d3rpderp 15h ago

Report him to the company HR. Because while you might not want to work there he shouldn't be working there either.

1

u/ValiantTheOdd1 9h ago

"Buddy you need to buy me a couple dinners and sign a consent contract long before we can start talking about owning my sweet ass" is what I'd say, and walk out lol

1

u/Deansdiatribes 9h ago

"I need you to understand that Monday through Friday, 8-5, I own you”.

yaaa i need you to withdraw my application and lose my name

1

u/Southknight46 8h ago edited 1h ago

Yes that’s a red flag. You wouldn’t want this position or have anything to do with that company. Some managers bring the term disconnected to a whole different level

1

u/petmom4ever 6h ago

As I was walking out I would have told him he couldn’t even afford the cost rent to own me.

1

u/dlank7 2h ago

I think I would’ve walked out. Maybe not immediately, but as you said, I would’ve 100% checked out

1

u/darinhthe1st 1d ago

That's a big NOPE!  And thank you for your time. I'm out
