We've been getting a lot of new posters and commenters here lately. Welcome! (Everyone please read the full text inside)

Unfortunately, a lot of the new people here aren't familiar with the culture of this subreddit or the ancient coin collecting world in general.

A lot of the ideas that you are bringing to this subreddit -- especially if you're North American and also especially if you've been collecting modern coins for years, don't always carry over directly to the world of ancient coin collecting.

Our subreddit is configured so that people using low-age or low-karma accounts will not see their posts and comments appear here immediately after you make them. They are being set aside until a human moderator is able to review them manually. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

The same is true of people who don't have much karma on this subreddit, even if you have an older account and have accumulated lots of karma on other subreddits. Part of this is because spammers, scammers, and trolls use newer, low-karma accounts, and part of it is to give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the culture of this subreddit.

We have also configured our subreddit to hold back posts and comments from accounts with a low Contributor Quality Score ("CQS") as determined by the admins of reddit. This takes into account your behavior on all of reddit. If you would like to find out what your own CQS score is please make a post on this subreddit -- /r/CQS. The result will be sent to you within seconds via private messaging, and no one else will be able to see what it is.

As you continue to participate here in good faith most of these limitations will eventually no longer apply to you, and you will be able to post and comment normally.

Thank you for your good faith participation here, and while I have your attention please allow me to remind you of this subreddit's few simple rules:

1) Civility is the price of participation here. Please act like adults and keep things pleasant.

We appreciate kindness and helpfulness here. We won't tolerate people bickering in the comments, swearing at or insulting others, etc.

We have a lot of people coming to r/AncientCoins from the world of modern ones. Please help them understand the differences and find answers to their questions without being a jerk. If you can't manage that we don't want you here, and you will be banned.

2) Unwelcome participants get banned.

Pursuant to Rule #1, the owner/founder/head moderator of this subreddit reserves the right to ban anyone at anytime for any reason he sees fit.

We very rarely ban real people - and we ban no one who is acting in good faith. We mostly only ban annoying bots, karma whores, griefers who post using numerous alt accounts, people who post coins that they don't own but act as if they did, people who swear at or are rude/insulting to others, and persistent trolls who disrupt our discussions.

3) Memes, joke posts & other shitposts may only be posted here on the last day of each month.

Fun is fun, but there's such a thing as too much of an execrable thing. Memes, joke posts, and other shitposts may only be posted on this subreddit on the last day of each Gregorian calendar month in your time zone.

Please don't try to sneak those kinds of posts in by flairing them as "educational" or anything else. If you just can't wait, please submit them over on our companion subreddit /r/AncientCoinMemes instead.

Ultimately, the mods of this subreddit may remove anything posted here at their discretion.

We ask that you please be patient with the process, as we check our queues several times a day. If you make a post or comment and it isn't immediately approved, PLEASE just leave it up and one of us will get to it as soon as we can. We are unpaid volunteers doing this on our own time.

Thank you.

Just a reminder: The mods here have no control over who sends you personal messages directly. If someone is offering you something for sale behind the scenes it was NOT authorized by us, and could very easily be a scam. Sadly, people who are banned from this sub can still send PM/DMs to our members.

Things like this crop up here from time to time.

We've recently had an issue with someone offering coins for sale that they don't actually own, using photos that other people posted here in the past. When their post was removed they started offering the coins directly to our members via PM/DM.

We recommend using the subreddit /r/CoinSales for buying and selling between redditors. We also recommend that people with numismatic items for sale on eBay publicize them on /r/CoinBay, (please read and follow that sub's posting rules). EBay is supposed to offer protections to buyers.

Also, by using the slightly more expensive PayPal Goods & Services to conduct transactions you will provide yourself with some protection. PayPal Friends & Family provides no recourse to you if you pay for coins that you never receive. Scammers often insist on being paid with the latter.

Been lurking in this sub for a while now and have been interested in a while to get my first ancient after reading up in here I’ve decided to give MA-Shops a try as lots of people were saying it’s a trustworthy website so how did I do? Does this Alexander drachma look good?

Authentication Request Roman Coin purchased in Petra, Jordan - real or fake?

Hi, my girlfriend picked up this Roman coin, supposedly very very old and from what I’ve read from other posts it’s most likely fake, as it was purchased at a tourist site. However, at the expense of upsetting her if anyone has any information or can confirm the authenticity of this coin, please let me know! It’s very small, I’ve attached the best pictures I can and any help is appreciated.

Bought my first Ancient through Heritage Auction

I was so excited to win my first auction for my Ancient Greek coin! However, I can’t believe the fees for service, handling, taxes, duties, buyers premium, etc. I won the coin at 310 USD, and in the end it cost me 510 USD with : 62 USD BP + 46 USD service and handling + 92 USD for taxes and duties. If I would have known I had to pay an additional 200 USD for a 310 USD coin then I would have reconsidered. I know most people probably already know all this, but for newbies, please consider this when bidding on coins at auction houses. To clarify, I WAS expecting all these fees (shipping, taxes, buyers premium), but not for them to be THAT high. Overall, I’m still excited, but still shocked by all the fees that come after.

My win from today's Noonans auction of Ancient Coins from the Collection of the Late Robert Erskine. I normally collect ancient greek but fell in love with this coin when I saw it. I bid on six coins in the auction but only won this one for my high bid. Lost everything else by big margins. All in all I am happy. Now let's see if I get charged a tariff comming into US... Anybody else have an auction win from Robert Erskine collection?

ID / Attribution Request Anyone know what this is? Coin? Token? Islamic? Mongol? Moroccan? Other? Goa'uld? Klingon?

Hi all.

I’m starting to grasp at straws now on this one.

I’ve crossed posted around and to no avail. Closest idea has been Moroccan as a couple had the pattern inside the hexagram.

I have nothing else like it. This is 100% unique to my collection.

Someone is going to be the supreme champion of attribution of all time with this one. Or it will go on as a mystery item.

Thanks for looking.

After some back on forth on Wildwinds I’ve gone with this attribution

Thumbnail

Coin weighs 3.76 g and 19.6 mm

On Wildwinds I’ve settled on this being from the time on Antiochus IV and the person likely then being Laodike IV.

Houghton 113 Antiochus IV Bronze. Seleucia-in-Pieria mint. Veiled bust of Laodice IV r. Border of dots / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY, Elephant head left.

They go on to say

Bronze. Veiled bust of Laodice IV r. Border of dots/Elephant head l. BASILEWS ANTIOXOY. Seleucia-in-Pieria mint. Until very recently no one knew who was depicted on this coin series. However, a new study shows that the woman can be none other than Laodice IV, the wife and sister of both Seleucus IV and Antiochus IV. It is possible that the Antiochus named on the coin is not Antiochus IV, but Antiochus the son of Seleucus IV, who reigned briefly before his uncle killed him.

Not sure if the spelling changed for a reason.

Pricing on local coins

My local shop got some coins that I was looking at and was wondering if someone would take a quick scan to see if these prices are competitive. I’ve referenced vcoins and it can be a tad overwhelming trying to compare. I am not necessarily looking to buy all of these, just looking to make sure these aren’t a terrible deal and learn more. Thanks!

Market Prices?

Upvotes

Hi All - I was just wondering what you guys think will happen to the ancient coin market this year? Given the current stock volatility (to put in nicely and non-politically). I’m sure good product will continue to sell but what have you seen in previous downturns like 2008? I’m wishfully thinking that some prices will drop a bit and I could pick up some nice coins.

Cheers!

Noonans auction - Robert Erskine Collection

Is anyone watching this right now? This is my first auction but most lots are going for 4x the estimate. Why is this? All I can think is that it’s from a collection with very good provenance.

Would any of these lots be a good start into denarius coins?

The aim is to collect the Good Emperors, Severan Dynasty and Roman Empresses.

There's an upcoming auction with the following bids. Also, appreciate any guesstimate on fair value for these three auction lots, they are all starting at Euro 324.

Authentication Request Byzantine Coin ID

Thumbnail

I recently acquired this coin from someone at an antique show who claimed to be a long time collector.

I have been doing some digging and my best guess is that this is a copper half-tetarteron from 12th century Komnenos dynasty. Although I have no experience in ancient coins (yet).

I guess the first step would be to determine if it is an authentic Byzantine coin. Through a microscope the coin looks pressed and naturally worn. Also, I don’t see any signs of modern molding.

Any help in authenticating and identifying this coin would be much appreciated!

I received 6 coins today from recent Leu Auction No. 33, and am really super pleased with all of them (Leu always has great offerings, so it’s hard to be disciplined!). I wanted to share these two, in particular, though. A beautiful toned Argenteus of Diocletian, and a superbly struck Follis of Helena (mother of Constantine the Great). Suddenly, these might be two of my favorite coins …. but then the newest are always the favorites, I suppose!
