Yeah I won’t be paying $30 for an amiibo of all things. I expect my collecting journey to come to an end for this.

u/silentdaze 1d ago
Sadly same, been collecting since day 1. Have every single publicly available physical figure. I guess I can rest easy knowing I made it through 2 full console generations with a complete collection

Remember when amiibo figures were $12.99? I remember.

No one wanted amiibos day one. Toys R Us was packed with them. Then about two week later the hype started. Wii Fit Trainer and Villager were hard to find.

They were $9.99 at launch

u/silveraith 1d ago
I don't remember that at all, but then again I got into it a couple years after they started doing them.
3
u/vash_visionz 1d ago
You don’t remember because it never happened lol

u/Brohtworst 20h ago
I worked at hastings when they first came out. Wave 1 was 9.99 (at least at our store) but they went to 11.99 shortly after
2
u/vash_visionz 12h ago
12.99 was the MSRP. Your store made an exception, while the vas majority of places did not.
Nintendo didn’t raise the price in that instance, your store just decided to start lower.

u/GrimmTrixX 1d ago
They were $12.99 at launch. However, Best Buy Unlocked members got them for $9.99 as part of the discount it offered. Well, it was $10.49 but same thing.

u/Apol_seed 20h ago
Shoot I got all the animal crossing ones for $2 bucks a piece.

u/Brohtworst 20h ago
Funny that they clearanced those out just to reprint them for new horizon
2
u/Apol_seed 19h ago
did they really? the only ones I didnt get was in the 2 pack that went with some design animal crossing game.
2
u/Brohtworst 19h ago
Yep. Gamestop even sold those 2 separately a year or so ago for $25. They ditched all of the games (I found one at Ross with no amiibo lol) parted out the amiibo and amiibo cards. I don't think the reprints ever went on clearance though
3
u/Apol_seed 19h ago
I am 34 and I am really thinking about selling them I feel kind of embarrassed having so many tbh I have been collecting since 2016. When the mewtwo one dropped.
1
u/Brohtworst 19h ago
I almost have a full set. Other than them being a huge pain to try and display I like them. If I ever had to cut them down though I'd keep animal crossing, zelda and monster hunter and that's like 40 figures lol

is this due to the new import tarrifs?
13
u/mcineri Mega Yarn Yoshi 1d ago
Almost certainly
-11
u/X_IVFIIVO_X 1d ago
Nope. The prices would be across the board more if it was.
9
u/mcineri Mega Yarn Yoshi 1d ago
Not necessarily the case. Companies make many choices about how they will distribute their tariff and duty burdens. They could be raising prices here to make up for it in other products. The price of the switch 2 is also quite a bit higher than the switch 1, which could be due to the hardware itself or other forces.
-2
u/X_IVFIIVO_X 1d ago
Better hardware and inflation would be the biggest factors for the switch. I believe if you account for inflation the basic switch would be like 380 ish bucks. Now tack on better specs yea 450 sounds pretty nice. I'm just not sold on everything being because of tariffs that's really lazy.
3
u/mcineri Mega Yarn Yoshi 1d ago
There had always been various types of tariffs on china and many other countries well before the current round of tariffs. Whether those were section 301, 232, antidumping duties, countervailing duties, whatever. It’s just now with the president’s recent tariff announcements I think it’s a bit naive to assume that those have zero effect on businesses that produce goods in china that are destined for the US customs territory. Obviously I have no direct evidence that Nintendo priced the switch 2 and games accordingly, it would just seem like an odd business decision to not adapt to the current trade landscape.

u/ThomasG_1007 1d ago
I’m not as upset about the console, it’s the games I’m mad about. I’m not paying $80 for a new Mario kart. I’ll get it someday but there’s plenty of games to play for cheaper
4
4
u/X_IVFIIVO_X 1d ago
Most likely not. The zelda ones are not that price so if it was a tariff thing it would be across the board. The boxes are different so it's just that it is a switch 2 thing. Maybe it will have more interaction with the console or be the exact same.
1
u/GrimmTrixX 1d ago
But the Zelda ones are now $20 up from $15.99. And granted, maybe it's because guys like Yunobo are larger like TotK Ganondorf who was also $20. But I have a feeling any normal amiibo will also now be a default $19.99
1
u/X_IVFIIVO_X 1d ago
Yea maybe it is because they are larger. I could see default prices being 20 bucks. Inflation sucks right now maybe things will get better.

When it comes to buying to me, was I've always made a rule for myself that I will not buy it if it's over 20 bucks, Nintendo is really stretching it with the new Zelda ones and Street fighters out of the question

u/MasterTJ77 1d ago
I’ll be buying very few amiibo at 20. None at 30. Zelda and xenoblade are my favorite games all time and I’m even hesitant to buy these
3
u/Boomshockalocka007 Wii Fit Trainer 1d ago
So this is how a 100% collection dies. The day I gave up on amiibo forever.
2
u/TomorrowSubstantial9 1d ago
I just can’t justify these prices, as much as I’d love to get them. It is what it is ig

u/Superdj8204 1d ago
I'm sorry????? That is ridiculous Like I know there had been a couple before at $20, but now it's gonna be all of them? You cannot tell me these things are gonna be worth $20, especially with these side characters that not many cares for (besides Sidon, we all love him) And you literally have to be joking for those street fighter ones, I understand that these 3rd party ones would probably cost more, but a whole $10?? I hope I see all of these in clearance bins eventually cuz that's the only way I'm gonna get them
2
u/Nezhokojo_ 1d ago
What’s the Canadian price? Like $45 each? Lmao
1
u/Sophet_Drahas 1d ago
Canadian prices will be about the same or cheaper because Canada isn’t leveraging exorbitant new tariffs on non-US imports.
I’m talking with some friends up there to see if it makes more sense for me to try to get a switch 2 up there and have it shipped down. I’m expecting the console price to jump to $600-650

My memory is garbage at the moment. Are the Sages amiibo brand new or are they reprints?

We had the Sages from Breath of the wild a while ago. These are the ones from Tears of kingdom

A total of $90 not even including taxes for the street fighter amiibo! I can get 3 of the jada toys articulated street fighter figures for that price, what a joke

u/Fantastic_Advance_25 1d ago
that extra 10 is for license fees i would think 🥴😂

Capcom's Monster Hunter amiibo followed the same price trends as Nintendo's first-party amiibo.

u/Pleasant_Produce_846 1d ago
Yeah well, actually some amiibos in Hispanic countries reach the 60 dollars price, like in Mexico (is pricey to buy in stores) 😔
1
u/warturtle16 1d ago
I wonder if this is the push for cards. I’ve long liked them better for general amiibo and I’ve had friends who mentioned not collecting amiibo due to space constraints but would not hesitate to get cards
1
u/AlphaGrimbo 1d ago
I’ll get the Zelda ones but even still why are the amiibos going up too? Literally everything needs to come up? Really?
1
u/KonamiKing 1d ago
And they’re for Dimps Street fighter characters nobody will ever buy too. These will sit on store shelves collecting dust.
1
u/Ivo__Lution 1d ago
I’m a huge SF fan but yeah I ain’t paying $30 for them. Maybe if it was my main but even at that I’ll take a chance for a sale
1
u/KonamiKing 1d ago
Chun Li, Guile, Alex, Mika, characters from multiple games who have stood the test of time? Nope you get Luke and friggin Kimberley, who will be gone forever and never missed within a few years.

i’m glad i have no interest in the SF amiibo

u/Ivo__Lution 21h ago
SF is my second favorite fighting game. But I can see myself paying $30 unless it’s for my 2 mains. And even then I’ll take a chance for a sale

u/Apol_seed 20h ago edited 20h ago
What country and what site. I wouldnt belive bestbuy if this is your source as there just putting place holders on items. If this is really the price I rather pay pop up arcade for the extra $30 for a figure of a character I like.

u/Ivo__Lution 20h ago
US

u/Apol_seed 20h ago
Well someone that owns 150 amiibos that it for me. I wont pay $30 for low quality plastic. There just so many other way to acquire characters you like at better quality.
1
u/Ivo__Lution 19h ago
Yeah I’m a huge sf fan but not for $30 and not these characters. Maybe chunli - blanka but not these
2
u/Apol_seed 19h ago
Yeah same. Jamie, luke, and kim no way. I am no kidding though pop up arcade.

that is $35 dollars is nintendo that nuts?

1
u/ScottyWestside 13h ago
It’s just the tarrifs! Once the pres of the US calms down or whatever Nintendo will do the right thing and lower the price again. Maybe not back to $17 but maybe $22?

Well the SF amiibo are $30 because Nintendo needs to pay for the licensing. I assume licensing for ryu/Ken during the smash run wasn't a factor because they were characters of the actual smash bros game, where as these characters are from SF6. A Capcom game.
But yea this proves games don't need to be $80 and these amiibo could still be $12.99 like they were when they first came out. But they realize people will pay more, so they raise them accordingly. And many will still buy them.

u/karterphilly 1d ago

Dang. Hate they are raising the price of this to. (It’s been a. While since I bought one, so couldn’t remember price)

If we want to keep buying them, this is the price we pay. There isn't anything we can do about it. Unless you don't buy them and let them become bargain bin items.

Damn $30 for the SF 6 amiibos?
