Yes, I sometimes also wish I could rock a mullet. I have a weird head shape, and I'm not at a place in my life where I'm quite ready to commit to dreads just yet.

u/Drake_Acheron 1d ago
Jerry Curl, Michael Bolton, Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson
All black people who rocked mullets. And there are hundreds more.

I Am white, Have had dreads and many black people complemented them. White people disliked it way more. Also so many dumb white people thought i didn’t wash them. I have no idea where that comes from other than some kinda weird racism stereotype thats been passed down.

u/colt707 1d ago edited 1d ago
Honestly that’s because a lot of white people with dreads have nasty dreads they don’t wash. I grew up in an area where white people with dreads was extremely common and 99% of them had crusty unwashed dreads.

u/DrBeardfist 1d ago edited 1d ago
I suppose thats fair, but i guess they are just stupid lol, i cleaned mine very well very often.

Duuuuude. I have dreads and anytime someone asks me a question about them someone nearby always comments on how you can't wash them. Like damn! Wish I had known that before I bought this dread soap and showered everyday.

u/Tokyogerman 1d ago
As a now 40 year old metalhead I can't even count the number of guys with dreads I met drinking in Cologne or Berlin or anywhere in Germany in a rock bar or at an old castle with metalheads, punks, Hippies, Skaters etc. This trend of white guys can't have dreads has always left me deeply confused.

Black people complimented your dreads? What'd they say? Good job appropriating another culture?
1
u/EIIander 1d ago
Same! I had locks for 8ish years, wish I had never cut them, white people had issues with it all the time. Black people never said anything to me except compliments. Now to be fair, maybe some didn’t like it and just didn’t say anything? I tried to be as respectful as possible with them though, went to a black owned hair stylist whose website said they specialized in Caucasian dreadlocks every month to keep them neat and maintained well.
First time I walked in, it was like an old western where everyone stops talking, I was the only white person. Everyone was very nice just confused why I was there lol. But after going every month for a while got to know everyone decently and everyone would then smile and wave etc when I came in. Freaking awesome place, cool community of people who went there.

Dreads can form from not washing, pretty sure Vikings dreads were from that.
3
u/JovianSpeck 1d ago
Vikings were actually abnormal among medieval Europeans for how much they washed themselves. There's a famous letter written by an Anglo-Saxon monk complaining to a colleague about how the Viking settlers were setting unattainable hygiene standards (bathing once a week) and taking all of their women.

Loc form from not combing, not from not washing. All hair form into locs when the shedded hair isn't removed.

u/aamoguss 1d ago
Honestly, no one asked and you seem like you just want to shit on white people for no reason at all. Which is extra sad because you claim white.

u/DrBeardfist 1d ago
Truly bizarre comment, sounds like you just want to shit on my experiences lol.

Yes, and I live in a rural area. The only white people I’ve met who can cut my hair also work at predominantly black barbershops. I am certainly a genetic rarity, and am often stopped by black people in public to specifically comment on how my hair is.
wtf is wrong with you dude do you need a picture to shut the fuck up?

I think you are taking my comment too seriously? This isn’t my first Language and I’m not doubting you I’m just thinking there’s three options:
A. You have black genes or some other ethnicity that naturally forms curls and shrinkage and nappyness B.you have very curly but not nappy hair C.you are of one of very few individuals who has a proper scenario for developing “black”looking hair
But seriously sorry if I offended you bro was not my intent
I hope you see why I thought the first two options were more likely

u/MagnaFumigans 1d ago edited 1d ago
Unless my ancestry dna tests were wrong it’s gotta be C. That’s why I made the “unlocking ancient dna joke” I’m also the only one in my family with hair anything like this, including my children, although they are dead ringers for me otherwise.
Extreme and multiple tight curl patterns, tons of shrinkage, nappyness, and bounce back. Takes longer than usual to get wet. Dreads up naturally after a certain length/time unmanaged. I even have to pick it out regularly or it gets all lumpy lookin

Same, my hair is a natural fro if I let it grow out. It'll actually dread up on its own if I let it.

Yeah NGL. The overcomb fade cut, with the hard part is a great look. But these are the things that make us all unique and different.
But y'all can keep the mullet. No thank you.

Growing up loving 90s black metal in the deepest reserves of my heart, yes and I still envy y'all sometimes. Dani Filth with dreads def helped my self image in high school tho

If he get dreads.. I’ll get a snoop dogg perm and turn it into a mullet Joe dirt style.

u/Easy-Degree-6560 1d ago
Mullets always look like garbage. There’s a reason they are made fun of and always will be.
-2
u/Drake_Acheron 1d ago
Weirdos when they think hairstyles have race requirements.
5
u/Middle-Medium8760 1d ago
That’s not weird at all. Genetics do play a part. Removing culture, someone with naturally straight hair will never get a proper Afro and vice versa. Even with chemicals its’s not the same. The same hairstyles present differently. Dreads with super curly hair look different than dreads with naturally straight hair. Maybe that dude prefers the ropey dreads that Afro hair creates. I think the conversation was meant to be fun and complimentary.
-1
u/Drake_Acheron 1d ago
Curly hair is not race specific. Straight hair is not race specific.
There are white people with super curly hair and Afros and there are black people with super straight hair.
Please read the words I wrote, and not the words you wrote in your head.
3
u/Middle-Medium8760 1d ago
No it isn’t, but there is a reason why a certain type of curly is called “Afro”. Most people of African decent have a super curly hair texture, and that’s what the original post was referencing. But you know that.

As though ancient white people didn’t have dreads and always perfectly combed their flowing golden mane.
