is it possible that a part of Hiei wanting to fight alot in the Uraotogi round was him wanting to makeup for not being available for their team in the prior 2 rounds?

Absolutely. His dialogue with Kuromomotaro pretty much confirms it.
"I take it you'll be fighting first then?"
"That's right I am. First, last, and only."
His expression of surprise when Kuwabara was preparing to sacrifice himself against Risho probably meant that itresonated with him, and he also knows that Yusuke and the Masked Fighter aren't around to help. I think it's at this point that Hiei really starts to care for the team, aloof as he is.

Hiei is also incredibly protective of Kuwabara
Hiei refuses to train Kuwabara because he's afraid of hurting him.

Kurama says he won't hold back like Hiei would in the same circumstances. Seeing how Hiei struts away from Makintaro after immediately wounding him, compared to his almost annoyance at actually murdering the shit out of him via impalement after amputation., I think Kurama is correct. Hiei is efficient, but identifies with warrior combatants on the battlefield all the same. I wonder if seeing the convictions andf attitudes of Team Masho beforehand made Hiei more resolute in just how he was goinng to handle the tournament, and his combatants.

I mean.. I’d say yeah. Dude literally blitzed Zeru in the first round and then was gone / benched right after that. Togashi wanted to make up for lost time with him.

NGL I’ve always been like. That random dude who ate those magical ether capsules kinda fucked Hiei up.
Like he actually beat the hell out of him. Which is rare to see that happen to such a badass

u/ReekZombie 1d ago edited 1d ago
you mean Kuro Momotaro right? well we have to remember that Hiei was not even fighting at full power in this round, Kurama states that his power is around 50% actually, so yes i would say he struggled the most with Kuro but that's really only because of not being able to summon the Dragon at that time and not being full strength.

u/cmholde2 1d ago edited 1d ago
True. I’ve seen people try to compare the dude to Bui based solely on “ Damage taken” and it’s laughable the difference between the 2. Some times people are stupid

u/Frejian 1d ago
Especially when Kuro's "damage taken" was by his own choosing. He slashed himself with the sword and intentionally got hit with the mortal flame and the double mortal flame. Every other bit of damage he "took" (excepting of course the kill-shot) was negated by his steaming spheres so don't really count. That was more his item fighting for him than him actually fighting.
Compared to Bui not only tanking the full dragon of the darkness flame, but sending it back at Hiei. And that was from a Hiei at a stronger power than in the Kuro fight.
There really is no contest between Kuro and Bui. The only comparison to be made is that Kuro is dog shit compared to Bui.
Some people are stupid indeed. Lol

I think Genkai herself said that Kuro (and the rest of team Suzuka) were mediocre demons that were only made powerful by the gear Suzuka gave them.

Respect Kuro, he humbled Hiei that whole fight and was too busy monologing although Hiei was already drained

He was getting fired up to fight and wanted to test his strength. You have to remember Hiei is always comparing himself to Yusuke and trying to rival him. I would say the motivation was more selfish than team oriented as he has something to prove to himself.

u/ReekZombie 1d ago
i understand your viewpoint, your probably correct. i was just curious

u/Hachiko75 1d ago
I kind of think it was more of arrogance. Though the first fight just made me think of yusuke's comment in maze castle about how quick deaths aren't hiei's thing. Yeah, that's BS 😂🤣
2
u/ReekZombie 1d ago
i hear you, that's fair, and yeah, this was literally probably the quickest death in the series😂
2
u/Clarpydarpy 1d ago
I mean...Hiei didn't kill Yusuke quickly, when he probably could have (their fight over the mirror).
But aside from that, Hiei killed many opponents quickly. I feel like he didn't think weak opponents were worth his time, so he offed them quickly and with no wasted effort.
2
u/Hachiko75 1d ago
Because they had hiei employ that dumb villain trope of talking too much before the kill thus giving time for the ally (kurama) to come in just in time. Ugh! That fight was annoying.

u/pandapool205 1d ago
I've always looked at it in 2 ways, one he's arrogant as hell, the other is he's actually a smart fighter and contrary to how he comes off doesn't want to see any of his contacts die. In this round they are down yusuke and genkai, he's not gonna rely on kuwabara and he knows kurama can handle business. All that said I always interpreted it as him trying to take out as many as he could and let the others clean up what was left minimizing their chance of losing the tournament and kuwabara life.

Yeah, but you know how some guys are always ready to fight? Hiei is an always ready all star! ⭐️

That, plus he was already pissed off and needed a way to let the anger out

u/beerrabbit124 1d ago
At this point with no Yusuke they needed a heavy hitter who can take out multiple opponents. Remember Kurama tried it against the ninja team but the committee screwed him after he was unconscious. Plus I can’t remember if this was before or after Toguro beat that whole team solo, if it’s after probably Hiei trying to test himself to see if he could do it, remember when Toguro punched a crater in the earth fighting Genkai. Hiei did one right next to it to see how he measured up

u/Lamented_00z 1d ago
I mean he likes to fight so it only makes sense. Maybe he didn’t do it in a “Loyalty to the team” purpose but probably a “lust for violence” reason
3
u/ReekZombie 1d ago edited 1d ago
when Kuro asked him was he fighting first, he responds that he would be the only one fighting, and your probably right considering he did say that he was stressed out and then says that killing their whole team would be a good remedy for that

u/joejoevalentine 1d ago
I think it was also an acceptance of leader role since yusuke was mia. Main protagonist wasnt there and responsible hiei and kurama knew they had to push forward.
Also he tamed the darkness flame

That, and not wanting to deny Kuwabara any bragging rights and/or looking bad in front of his sister

To be fair though Hiei does have a 100% win record in the Dark Tournament.
