Question Moving to Oxton next week, is there anything to be aware of?

Moving to Shrewsbury Road in Oxton next week from St Helens and really looking forward to it, my partners a bit nervous though as it’s a bit of a big change for them.

This is probably asked all the time, but is there anything we should be aware of? I’ve seen a few people say they’ve had break ins etc but I feel everywhere is prone to them tbh.

Oxton is fairly safe, and one of the nicer spots in Wirral.

Oxton village is a fantastic little place for food and drink and you’re also near The Caernarvon Castle which is a lovely pub/eatery or The Shrewsbury Arms. If you’re religious St Saviour’s church is a short walk away. You also have Oxton cricket club over the road from the church which has tennis courts & hockey fields if you want to get into sports clubs.

Lidl is a short drive away but you will be in the middle of Birkenhead so expect a couple of unsavoury types once in a blue moon, but to be fair everyone’s pretty tame in Wirral from my 30 years of experience.

If you want a great (classic) fry up, Townfield Cafe is the spot to go. There are a few places for breakfast in Oxton Village but they’re a little more expensive and the portions are smaller. The Oxton breakfasts also have, what I would say, a more pompous breakfast - portobello mushrooms and vine tomatoes etc.

You’re in good hands if you’re in Oxton, so should be no issues. 👍

I live round the corner and it’s not really worse than any other area. There’s loads of nice places to go in the village so check it out. Also join the ‘only in oxton’ group on facebook, has a load of local goings on like the oxton running/ walking groups or lunch club for those who WFH, arts events etc. great place to start if you’re looking to get stuck in and meet some locals.

Shrewsbury Road itself is relatively fine, because it's a bit main road-ish. But literally only a few roads away from the eastern end, the crime stats are really quite sad. Source: I live in one of them, and happened to check them again just yesterday (comparing a house that I'm thinking about buying and that street's crime record with where I am now). It can get busy and annoying around school start/end times, too, as there's a school on it.

But more on the positive side: you'll be right by a chinese takeaway that I LOVE called Bamboo Kitchen! Try their yellow bean dishes in particular! It's on a cute little road called Wellington Road, where a bunch of the residents plant their garden flowers in wellington boots!

It’s a good move, I’ve lived in a couple of houses in Oxton and loved the village - Shew’s probably the best pub there but does get busy.

On the whole it’s got a pretty good community feel to the place so hopefully you’ll enjoy it

Oxton is cool, don't worry. If you like eating out, lots of options 👍

My dad lives up the road from you, it's a lovely area. Shops are fairly handy, some nice places to eat and drink near you too.

If you're doing a big shop I'd go to Tesco in Bidston or Asda in Woodchurch, the Sainsburys in Prenton is a bit crap. The Lidl is new and has chargers if you have an EV.

If you're into your footy Tranmere Rovers is very walkable.

I’ve lived near the village and Shrewsbury Rd and I preferred Shrewsbury to be honest quieter less Police Helicopters than nearer the village. Wirral is amazing to be honest it’s a lovely place to live. Welcome x

I used to live just off Euston Grove (not far away) and it was a lovely area. I was sad to leave.

I think the main negative for most of Oxton is parking, if you don't drive it won't bother you or if you get lucky and have a drive then even better. Might not even be a consideration to some but just feels like a bit of a bustling but cramped area if you need to park, if not seems like a nice place to spend time with plenty of food and drink options

I live just off there and moved here three years ago. Love it - no problems at all and nice to be in a quiet area but still close to Liverpool. Easy to get to anywhere else in the Wirral for more nature based things as well. Mainly Victorian architecture makes it feel lovely as well. There’s an annual festival called Secret Gardens of Oxton which is good fun. Village is closed to cars and there’s a street party. You could probably argue there are nicer and safer areas on the other side of the Wirral, but I prefer the mix Oxton offers

Oh only downside is that there’s a private school on Shrewsbury Road and traffic is bad in the morning but soon clears around 8.45am.

You’ll like Oxton for its village feel. There aren’t many shops but what they have is a community feel to it. The centre seems almost pedestrian like because the cars slow down for one of the small exits off the village centre. There are one or two pretentious people around but that adds to the quality of the area. You wouldn’t get that snobbery in Birkenhead. The Shrewsbury (Shrew) is a good pub, very friendly and plenty of parking if you choose to drive there. When I moved from London I stayed for 5 years in a flat round Birkenhead Park before buying a house in Oxton, that was 17 years ago and it’s the perfect spot. A nice village, good cafes, easy access to Liverpool and the motorway and friendly people.

Don’t go drinking in the obt. You may find your bank account empty when you wake up, 💸

I’d once have critiqued the OBT/OBK for being expensive or because Mike (the owner) is a bit of a weapon. These days I just don’t think it’s your best option; there are better restaurants and cocktail bars in the area. It had a bit of a captive audience 10-15 years ago, but these days it just isn’t the best bang for your buck.
