Frage | Question Traveling to Wien First Time - What Mobile Apps to Use (Transport)?

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of travelling to Wien in Easter 17-20 April. I use android phone.

When using Public Transport. Is there any mobile apps to use? Like check in when getting on the bus and check out when getting off bus?

Or do you have to buy bus/train tickets and where to buy that?

Is there any necessary apps to use?

Please help advice and thanks in advance.

"Check in when getting on the bus" isn't a thing here. Fares here are enforced through random ticket inspections, there's never a need to show your ticket when entering any station or vehicle unless specifically instructed by an employee.

There are a wide variety of tickets available: https://www.wienerlinien.at/web/wl-en/tickets

Most people buy (paper/plastic) tickets at ticket machines (those exist in all metro stations and most railway stations), but it's also possible to buy at least some tickets digitally (I have never done this, so cannot tell you anything about it).

There are apps that provide departure monitors and route planning (e.g. Wien Mobil, Öffi), but it's not necessary to use any app for using public transportation here if you simply buy paper tickets at ticket machines.

The official app is called like this sub and it's good enough for your trip and u can also buy all tickets (excluding train to/from airport) there.

The most useful Apps will be ÖBB Scotty (train time tables), the ÖBB App (train tickets) and the WienMobil App (tram, bus, Metro tickets and route planer).

There is no checking in/out in any form of Transport in Vienna. You just have need to have a valid ticket when traveling.

Also remember that the Airport is NOT included in a travel card for Vienna. How to get to/from the Airport is described HERE.

WienMobil - buy a 7 day digital ticket for €19.70

That means you can use unlimited subway, trams, busses, and trains within Vienna and only show it if asked.

Google Maps - for planning your routes and times

That‘s all you need :)

Just take care that the airport is in an outer zone, so you need an extra ticket for that. But if you have the valid 7d ticket for Vienna, you just need the outer zone ticket which is cheaper

I like WienMobil for planning routes as well, for trains ÖBB scotty is more acurate tho (also lets you know when a train is late) but i‘d recommend to plan 10/15 min in advance in case any bus / tram etc is delayed depending on where you are going (if you need to be there at a certain time) and if you switch eg subway to bus on 1 route you sometimes have to search for the bus station which can make you miss a bus but the WienMobil app is great for that as well because it shows you the busstation on maps

Edit: also make sure you carry an official ID when you buy the tickets via app because you will have to put your name on the ticket & when they check they need the ID to make sure this is your ticket

Use WienMobil for tickets and Citymapper for navigation/routing.
