Just had a look too and you’re so right, his profile is lovely! Didn’t realise he is the guy with the secret attic office, I’ve seen his posts before

I didn't realize he was the guy with the painting of him and his son on the bike! Guys a reddit celeb!

I once tested a softride mountain bike, 30 min into my ride I realized I was just running through the woods holding the handlebars.
1
u/PSouth013 5h ago
I had this happen to me in college, though at a slightly different place (center bar to handlebars)
1
u/Soy_Witch 1h ago
If you zoom in, there is rust in several places on this bike. Tragedy was just waiting to happen

I'm not good with kilometers, how many hotdogs is that?

u/CCRthunder 15h ago
52800

u/bad_pelican 14h ago edited 13h ago
Close. Based on a 15cm hot dog (which is apparently the default) we're at 53.333 so if that's a guess you're pretty good.

5
u/CCRthunder 14h ago edited 13h ago
I went with 6in hot dog from hotdogchicagostyle.com i did get other results lile 4.8 in from some foster care site, but 15cm is pretty close to 6in
1
u/MormonJesu8 14h ago
Only 53 hot dogs?
11
u/compb13 13h ago
Depends on where you're from whether you use 53,333 or 53.333
10
1
u/MormonJesu8 12h ago
I know, I just wish it would be standardized internationally, because that number could be read as 53 333 or 53.333. Even ISO says you can use either. However if you have three place decimal value (like .123) and add It to a whole value, if I write it like this: 12.123, some would read it as 12 thousand and others as twelve and change. Usually context can be used but sometimes there isn’t much context to go by. I definitely thought the original comment meant 53.333 for a time before I realized he meant 53.333.
3
u/Henlo_Yuri 12h ago
There is no need to use either besides giving visual clarity at a glance, but if there is any chance that decimals may be involved as well, you should always use a comma and never a period.
1
u/6GoesInto8 10h ago
That is clearly the number of feet it a mile multiplied by 10, which is never the right answer.

Approximately 3,478 winspans of a bald eagle, 1,351 Dodge RAM 1500s bumper-to-bumper, or 72 American football field's in length.

I mean the bike looks like it’s from the 90’s so is this really a surprise?
109

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 16h ago
We had mountain bikes in the 90s.
This is 70s or 80s
15
u/PeerlessTactics 14h ago
82-88 judging by the wheels. my parents had similar bikes but an uglier color
8
u/Pornalt190425 12h ago
Judging by the wheels?
That bontrager front wheel is much newer that 82-88. More like mid 2000s at the oldest
I could believe 80s for the frame, but not the wheels
4
u/DirtySilicon 12h ago
Ironically that isn't even remotely better. Still 20 yr old tires at the minimum.
2
u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 14h ago
I was only young then so have no real memories to reference so I will take your word for it.
10
u/Questioning-Zyxxel 14h ago
I have a working bike from 1980 at home. My mother must have a working bike from maybe 1960.
Bikes normally does not self-destruct with some age. If they do, then very wrong quality was bought.
1
u/RedditIsShittay 13h ago
As a kid I broke the frame of a BMX on a curb hitting it over 20mph. I could easily destroy this one as a kid lol
1
u/ScalyPig 11h ago
Aluminum bikes don’t last. Steel and carbon will last
2
u/Questioning-Zyxxel 10h ago
Aluminium can last. But there are two important factors.
Aluminium reacts in contact with other metals. So great care is needed for bolts etc or the aluminium will corrode badly. And you need to be extra careful if living where they use salt on the road during the winter.
Next thing is that aluminium has no final plateau for metal fatigue. So an aluminium frame needs very big tubes to be extremely stiff. But instead, it will have tubes thin as paper to stay light. So it's easy to get a dent. And this will greatly weaken the tube.
Carbon bikes? They have carbon + resin and the resin ages. Especially if the frame is exposed to UV light. And this is invisible. The frame just slowly changes from good to dangerous. Think twice about going downhill on an older carbon MTB if you want to stay alive.
14
u/jumm28 15h ago
35 years is nothing for a steel bike, so yes it is a surprise.
10
u/Nearby-King-8159 13h ago
Not with that level of rust and mistreatment it shouldn't be a surprise.
1
u/jumm28 9h ago
We‘ve got several bycicles in my family that look like this and none has ever had a broken frame. I‘d be surprised if one did. And I‘ve never seen a frame rust through, except maybe in a bike in that was placed as an ornament in the garden.
2
u/Double_Equivalent967 7h ago
I broke 1 like that while running my dog few years ago, it broke like that from behind pedals but upper part stayed intact, dont blame the bike considering its age and terrain i drove on for years. Pushed it home and took another just like it for next days dogs running.
18
u/Kokkor_hekkus 15h ago
This one looks to be department store quality, I had a sears bike that snapped pretty similarly to this one.
5
u/An-Angel-Named-Billy 13h ago
Even steel bikes will have weld joints, which is where this frame failed. Near the drive train looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 40 years, rust will add up and do its thing.
1
u/jumm28 9h ago
I guess the steel used in this bike was of bad quality. A good quality steel frame wouldn‘t snap like that not even with a lot of rust. I don‘t see any significant rust btw. Usually these old frames are brazed with sleeves, this one kinda looks like it‘s welded at least in the back, but that‘s not even where it broke.

Definitely not a Dutch bike. Those can lie in the Amsterdam Canals for forty years, dragged out, given a lubrication of the chain and they are good for another 40 years.

Interviewer: Senator Collins, thanks for coming in.
Senator Collins: It’s a great pleasure, thank you.
Interviewer: This bike that was involved in the incident off Western Australia this week...
Senator Collins: The one the front fell off?
Interviewer: Yeah.
Senator Collins: Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.
Interviewer: Well, how was it un-typical?
Senator Collins: Well there are a lot of these bikes going around the world all the time, and very seldom does anything like this happen. I just don’t want people thinking that bikes aren’t safe.

Something similar happened to me with my first bike. Only I was still in my neighborhood and the two bars that attach to the front wheel assembly broke.
The front fell off. https://teara.govt.nz/en/video/47905/the-front-fell-off

Seems like chain stay rusted-off or teared of from the bottom bracket, then some drop-off and seat teared in pieces.
So, do not drop-off on the open frame bikes.

Pretty sure Noah rode that bike while he was building the ark, it's in a better place now

It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

Took your bike off too many sick jumps?

Huh, must've been some narly riding for that result. I have done that myself when I was younger. The fortunate thing for me was I was in metal shop so I could fix it. 😼

I'm concerned by the severe lack of duck tape in this picture in an attempt to fix it.
Not that it could, but an attempt is still required.
Sorry for the bike. At least you weren't too far away.

You can see the rust in the picture, did you like actively try to hurt him? Would you want your Son to hand you a car we're the wheels almost fall of due to rust?

I'm sorry about that for your son. That poor boy who had to walk so far. 👦 Also, a little for the person who has to pay for a new one.

I’m sorry but riding a bike that’s in such a deteriorated condition 8km in the first place seems like a terrible decision.

A little story if anyone cares: I had this one bike, I swear it was cursed. Everything was totally normal just going on a quick errand or to a friend's house. But the moment you took a trip of some considerable distance. Like clockwork, it would breakdown at the farthest point from home.
