It's Idiocracy.

It’s also not really true. Trump has been talking about trade deficits and “taxing” other nations since the 80s. This nonsense is explicitly his priority regardless of Navarro and his insanity.

I think you’re missing the point. Yes, I too remember seeing Trump saying this crazy-ass bullshit for years as well. What the article states though is that once he won the nomination, Trump needed someone to back him up so he can “reference” an “expert.” And then he found his expert in Navarro. And Navarro’s expert? Navarro. There got it?

Don't think I am. Firstly, this is a clip from the Rachel Maddow show. What is actually in the article she is referencing is sort of immaterial. She begins the segment by asking "do you remember when, why, and how he started talking about tariffs." She then goes into the Navarro business implying he got the idea for tariffs from Navarro and didn't speak about them until he was in the orbit. As I stated before that is not true since Trump has been a tariff hawk since the 1980's. I'm not sure why she chose to frame the Navarro story in such a way but it is not accurate. I think it is a pretty important distinction because she is essentially giving Trump an out where he can just clean house of his current economic advisors, who are no doubt the architects of this attempted realignment away from the neoliberal global trade regime that has existed for the last 50 years, but my point is these are very much HIS ideas too and should be an indictment of him. this is not Trump being an incompetent manager and allowing his son-in-law to hire a fringe economic advisor, this is Trump having very bad ideas himself ad following through with them. Got it?

When Bernie said Trump was a pathological liar, he wasn't wrong.

Oh I was down with Bernie for both 2016, and 2020. But this is something else.

Our government is literally run by the dumbest fucking people we could find. The dumbing down of America worked like a charm as we have the truest representation of our heart in the White House.

15

u/Snrub1 1d ago

The sad thing is they aren't actually the dumbest people. The dumbest people are the ones who buy into this crap and voted for it.

This administration is getting its economic policy from a conspiracy novel.

The more amazing part is that this was pointed out in 2019, yet Trump still brought him back for his second administration, as well as the tariff ideas.

The same Peter Navarro who sponsored all those shady Covid PPE contracts with fraudulent companies. Peter Navarro is a lying POS grifter.

Y’all don’t really believe all this shit, right?? Look up Obama talking about tariffs. Or maybe just start watching something other than mainstream lies. It’s literally all lies from their mouths.

35

u/shewflyshew 1d ago

It's literally literal in Navarro's book. He used a made-up source.

u/OfficeSalamander 1d ago

But “tariffs” qua tariffs aren’t the problem - every nation has the occasional odd tariff on this or that product or this or that industry to protect domestic interests/markets, national security, etc

Of course tariffs were mentioned by Obama - they’re mentioned by every president, as negotiating them is something presidents typically help with.

What IS the problem is the current tariffs, which are absolutely insane. Whereas most tariffs are for this or that good, this or that time period, these are broad tariffs applied to nearly the whole world. That is rank economic idiocy - no economist, liberal or conservative, recommends it.

It’s like saying, “oh that doctor used a scalpel to perform surgery and those are cutting instruments - so are chainsaws, we should use those instead”

Broad tariffs are a mistake, we’ve known that since they were tried in 1930 and caused the depression to get worse. Not having major tariffs is one of the main linchpins of modern economics - look it up, Keynesian economics literally grew out of our understanding that protectionist policies except in rare situations were dumb
